Atlas sends an installation crew to West Virginia two 12X50 Big Boy Culvert Shelters. This bunker is a hybrid type bunker where we mix a square mud room with regular stairs to a pair of GIANT culvert pipes.

As a prior nuclear missile maintenance officer at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, if there is a nearby nuclear explosion the sand in your escape tube will heat up so much it will turn to glass and you will never get out. Of course the EMP is going to knock out all your generators and fry all electrical and computer lines.

If the heat in the escape trunk is enough to melt sand.... within a few feet of the bunker... I'm guessing that the people inside are kind of cooked anyway.

@@everythingluxury7 Sand melts at about roughly 1700°C (3090°F). Assuming that that nuclear air burst produces heat that is present long enough, and penetrating deep enough into the ground to melt sand deep enough to cause a problem using an escape trunk filled with sand (say a foot or so).... it is also going to be heating the ground one or two hundred feet away, deep enough to turn that bunker into an oven. Even if the temperature in the bunker "ONLY" rises to a tenth of that temperature (309 degrees F).... that's basically the temperature to bake a turkey at. And people will start dying of heat stroke within a very short period of time. The highest reported core body temperature in a patient who survived without permanent residual deficits was 46.5°C (115.7°F). This 52-year-old patient suffered from environmental heatstroke, and received medical treatment, including removal from the hot area they were in. There's no removing someone form this bunker to a cooler spot. On the other hand.... that presupposes that the bunker is pretty damned close to ground zero, in order to be that close to a nuclear blast. The bunkers in this video do not appear to be very close to any strategic target so that fireball should not be a factor.... just maybe a brief forest fire burning over the bunkers. which should not be a problem. All the folks have to worry most likely are: 1. The US government requisitioning it, 2. roving gangs of people looking to help themselves to whatever is inside, 3.Fallout, 4. sickness spreading rapidly in the closed environment of the bunkers; 5 incompatible occupants knifing each other or worse. 6) unplanned for guests draining prep supplies, and , as mentioned in another comment, a really messy Taco Tuesday aftermath.

Your right. A double weld doesn’t guarantee a water tight seal unless you X-ray the welds. But that’s costly. Also if you noticed, the vertical welds were being done down hill. Any welder knows what that means. Slag runs into the weld area meaning no penetration. Might as well use superglue. I’m in excavation. All I could think about was how depressing life would be like in this shelter if it actually had 24 people in it. There is one small area for a tv that maybe 6 or 7 people could watch at the same time. Aside from eating for only 12 people at a time you would have to spend the rest of your time in your bunk. Could you imagine spending months in here?
@nordicresilience7449

Depends on the alternatives, if 24 people are hunkering down there for some extended time things outside are _bad_. Would still be a pretty sweet deal compared to getting your skin burnt to a crisp in the initial heatwave followed by your internal organs slowly melting from the radiation of a nuclear blast. If I had the option I'm pretty sure I'd chose the bunker ;-)

For me not worried at home. Central Wisconsin is a poor target. However with the new administration, strides will be made by embolden rogue states.

People stop showing up to work safety Checks aren't done yeah we got problems. The biggest one is Chernobyl and that's a problem for another 19935 years. Let's see... 24 people, using toilet four times a day on average.... (Or come down with some bug from a whole bunch of stressed-out people in very, very tight quarters; everybody in my Navy boot camp company came down with some sort of gastro-intestinal bug, I understand that that and upper respiratory infections are common in such situations. ) Anyway, that comes out to a toilet being used every 15 minutes. If the city/county power and water resources are not working, for how long can you stay down there since at some point the batteries and the generator stop working, especially if there has been an EMP? For the air inlet and exhaust, I'd want a large rock/gravel pit with a steel grate a few feet below the surface and the pipes below that so you can't just crush, cover or even find the inlet and outlet. I'd also want it on or near a slope where the ground water can drain by gravity so no need for sump pumps that can fail and need replacement, that way it can sit a decade without power and will still be dry! Also, if they can't find it they can't damage it!

I also think the air pipes should be in a recessed pit, with a grate and foliage covering them. Sure, they have a drain to prevent someone from pouring flammables or other liquids, but there is no safeguard in place if someone were to seal them and effectively cut off the air supply to the bunker. Also, the NBC filter is in the master bedrooms of most of these bunkers. The filter will eventually become full of radioactive particulates, and emit radiation inside of the bunker. The filtration system needs to be shielded.

As someone who plans on getting a shelter from Atlas one day later down the road, I’d consider the dual Big Boy setup quite genius. It’s spacious and has all of the necessities such as a shower or a wall outlet. The reason I respect those that spend a large amount of money on a shelter like this is because this is a safe shelter for a LOT of scenarios and is engineered to keep people safe.
@disposabull
@disposabull 2 роки тому
Don't bother, these are really bad by European standards. A much better plan: 1) Dig big hole 2) Pour concrete base 3) Weld some 3/4/5 mm steel sheets in place for the bunker 4) Pour the concrete walls and roof It costs way less, is way stronger and will last centuries longer than these thin pipes in earth.
@askthegamer2010
@askthegamer2010 2 роки тому
@@disposabull With all do respect, your plan isn't a "bunker" in any way. It sounds like a concrete coffin. Firstly, you'd go mentally insane in a concrete box. I know this from first hand experience as I've had to sleep in a concrete storm cellar before and even in one night, I was loosing my mind. The point of an Atlas shelter is for it to provide you with the absolute best protection while still feeling like home.
@deadinthehead3505
@deadinthehead3505 2 роки тому
@@askthegamer2010 Clearly you did not understand what they are saying, you can finish the inside any way you like. The more home like you want it will drive the cost up a lot. The main structure should be a very thick concrete box able to carry a load above so you can build and have a way to defend the bunker and secure air vents and such. ukposts.info/have/v-deo/cIV8gpehep2hpqc.html&ab_channel=colinfurze this is a good example of what we are talking about and is cost friendly even on a larger scale and safer
@tstuff
@tstuff 2 роки тому
@@disposabull Actually the arc shape is far stronger structurally than a flat box shape you are suggesting. And that "thin pipe" is at least 5mm thick. So what you see here: 1)dig big hole - Done 2) concrete slab - Done 3) 5mm metal sheets welded together - Done with an arc shape which is better 4) pour concrete - Why? The compacted rock and dirt provides sufficient support in keeping everything stable around it. These "culverts" are used in some very heavy traffic roads and bridges and they can last for longer than most people live. All that extra welding and concrete is not going to save any money.
@disposabull
@disposabull 2 роки тому
@@tstuff I didn't suggest a flat box, you just assumed I did. I did have another reply but it was deleted, hohum. Go look at images of culvert collapse, go look at colin furze's bunker build on youtube. That build cost about 30k, a fraction of what an atlas bunker costs and it is structurally way, way better. (still needs a proper blast door on it though) Please try to get your head out around the concept that in Europe we have multiple countries that require bunker capacity for the entire population, Switzerland has capacity for 130% of it's population. We have millions of them (not exaggerating) and they are big chunky reinforced concrete with a thick blast door.

JUST AN OBSERVATION : seems like these shelters need a 3rd point of entry / exit. Both the main entrance and the emergency exit are in a direct line from the site, and relatively close to the bunker. Perhaps another line of escape could be run from the existing lines, and exit above ground at a DISTANCE from the bunker. I'm thinking some kind of hidden entrance - maybe disguised as a rock formation - and at least 100 feet from the bunker. That way, if a landslide or tree fall blocked the bunker area, the #3 port would still operate.
