In this video we drive our 64 Ford Galaxie 500 out on the highway system for the first time in over 30 years . This car has a 390 fe big block engine, c6 transmission, and ford 9 inch rear axle. We have a complete playlist on this car with all of our previous videos of saving this car from the junkyard. We are trying to make it look like an old nascar car from the 60s .

It's so great to see young Ralphie taking an interest, learning about old cars and learning the work ethic from his Dad. He and the girls are going to grow up as fine young men and women with such great parents. Another great video! PS, I use a small inline hand pump to draw fuel through from an empty fuel tank. They're only a couple of bucks on evilbay and save a lot of messing around. Good luck!

The primary or "leading" shoe is the shoe with the shorter lining and goes towards the front of the car. When the brakes are applied, the primary shoe contacts the drum and the "drag" forces try to rotate it in the direction of drum rotation. The primary shoe will move slightly off the anchor pin at the top of the backing plate and since there is no anchor point at the bottom where the star wheel adjuster is located, it (the primary shoe) applies additional force to the rear shoe that has the longer piece of lining. The direction of rotation and additional force on the secondary shoe pushes it against the anchor pin which is there to keep it from moving any further in the direction of drum rotation. Basically the whole shoe assembly moves or "rotates" slightly on the anchor pin at the top of the backing plate. The longer lining is on the rear shoe just to provide additional wear characteristics since it gets the most force applied to it and also because most braking is done in the forward direction.

When driving forward, the rear brake shoe is pushed off with respect to the direction of rotation of the brake drum and the front brake shoe is pushed on. As a result, the braking force of the rear brake shoe decreases and the front shoe increases. To keep the braking power of the shoes even, the rear shoe is longer than the front shoe.
@Sleeperdude
@Sleeperdude 2 роки тому
Ok thank you. Great information
@charlesbeck1138
@charlesbeck1138 2 роки тому
That being said above, the most braking effort comes from the rear shoe being wedge into the drum by the force from the front shoe when applied.

In my many years of drum brake repairs, I have found many brake shoes not put in the correct spot. Long ones on the same side. Long ones on the front. But that's why they come to us mechanics I guess.

I personally love doing drum brake rebuilds. I'm an engine assembler by trade but moved away so mechanical work can be fun again. I guess I love it because that was my first successful repair on my 64 falcon wagon back in 97 I purchased with my own money at age 15 in SD California. I just want to add, you and your family have motivated me to work on my old truck that just sits and I'm going to drive that first gen lightning around after I fix the rear brakes 😎👍

The modern way unfortunately is to throw stuff instead of fixing stuff…. So how cool to be able to show your kids ( not Rocky) how to rebuild cars and give them all life skills. That’s how you learn by doing stuff not reading about it. Great family vibe , with goats puppies and all. Regards from the UK 👍

We had a 1964 Galaxie 500 almost just like this one is the mid 90’s. It was all original w/390 except for Nice wheels and tires. It had a white top and red body. Now we have a 1963 1/2 that’s near mint and a 1965 that we restored after we sold the 1964 model. I was a young teenager helping to work on these things and my love for cars and trucks grew from it.

My Dad had a 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 Sunliner convertible with a 352 V8 , 3 speed Cruise - o matic automatic transmission and posi traction. It was originally a California car my brother bought when he got out of the Navy in 1966. He drove it cross country to Connecticut, eventually sold it to my Dad so he could buy a new 1966 Chevelle Super Sport 396. That posi - traction came in handy the time our Jeep pickup got stuck in mud and snow and the old Ford helped to pull the Jeep out.

The short shoe goes to the front because of the rotation of the wheel pulls that shoe into the drum. If you put the long shoe in the front the wheel will want to lock up when you press the brakes. I hope that makes sense.

Most of the Galaxie 500s with an FE were powered by a 352 engine. The XL models were mostly 390 and a few rare 427s. Many of the automatics had a cast iron cruise-o-matic transmission. I grew up with my dad working on our 4door hardtop since i was Ralphie's age, laughs and memories that last forever. You're a good man, keep up the good work!
@MattsRageFitGarage
@MattsRageFitGarage 2 роки тому
Yep, most of them come with a 352. Kind of a bastard of an engine these days. My dad has a 64 500XL that was a 352, PS,PB,A/C car and now has a 445 stroker with a C6 and gearvendors overdrive. Nothing really wrong with the 352 until you go to rebuild one to find out the replacement off the shelf pistons are .064" shorter in compression height than the originals. When I found that out I decided to turn mine into a 390,(mine is a 4 door sedan) had the bores sonic tested before going to 4.050" bore and 2 of the cylinders were as thin as .086" right from the factory. Scrapped that block. I now have a pretty stout 390 dressed as the original 352, original cruise o matic with 2200 stall converter and shift kit, and 3.70 gears. That one is a pretty good laugh, it looks all stock except for the aluminum radiator and surge tank. Sure doesn't run like stock!

As an old school mechanic I’ve learned a few things about older cars. There is a primary shoe and secondary shoe. When the brakes are applied the spinning wheel puts more torque on the primary shoe. The secondary is bigger to help keep the primary from wearing so fast. A disc brake doesn’t have this problem. If you’re going NASCAR install Brimbo disc. They will stop on a dime and leave a nickel showing!! You need a three point seat harness to keep from going thru the windshield!! Also if you think the needle is stuck hit the float bowl with a rubber hammer. It MAY free up. If you’re gonna do burnouts you will need a front line lock!! Also you exhaust pipes should point toward the rear tires to blow smoke and choke everybody!! Also paint your car like Fireball Roberts. !!!!👍🏻 Google his number!!

Glad to see it's coming along. I still can't get over how much has been swapped on that car especially for it sitting for 30 years. Someone must have really driven it a lot when it was in its prime. I noticed the rear brake line distribution block is on the passenger side of the axle on that car? on both of my 64's it's on the driver side. That is weird. Something about that axle doesn't look quite like the 9" in either of my cars, might be an 8" from something else? If the speedometer cable or driven gear at the transmission isn't causing that speedometer jump the problem is very likely the worm gear for the odometer causing the issue. My dad's 64's speedo would jump 30 MPH faster and slower than actual speed and upon taking it apart one of the nylon teeth was chipped and the rest were worn. It would cause the input of the speedometer to bind up when that chipped tooth came around and then once the speedometer cable was wound up tight enough to overcome the resistance it would unload all that resistance and cause the bounce. Nothing can be done other than replace the speedometer with a good one in that case, nobody makes the gears.

@@Sleeperdude I frequent a few galaxie facebook groups and every so often people complain about the same speedometer issue. It seems to be a fairly common problem on the cars that were driven a lot. My dad's car has 258k miles on the body and there's no telling how long it was bouncing like that before we got ahold of it and put a new speedometer in it. My car has 159K and the speedo works great in that one still.

If you pull the speedo cable, wipe it down and lightly grease it, it should settle down. love this episode, everyone involved, and your Daughter saying she'd drive it ! Love the puppies, they are growing fast! I wish I had one!

Hey, SleeperDude and SleeperMom. Use 30 to 40 pound braided fishing line to sow with. It is tougher than nails. I use it to Largemouth Bass fish. Then use industrial needles. Mill piecing thing's together. Brings the whole family into the project. Man, I love this Nascar themed Galaxie. Shawn.

Do not hold me to it, I'm pretty sure Ford was still using generators in 64. That might be the reason for all of the "in laws wiring"?

First to comment woohoo... Reason the brakes are so soft is because you have a rubber line going that far... Add in the steel line and it should be back to somewhat normal pressure..... Its not too safe havin that much rubber line.... It cannot buildup proper pressure like with the steel line & will swell and cause a very soft pedal and may endup losing brakes completely sleeper man

I seen on junkyardigs where I believe his girlfriend Mook got him an aromatic brake pumper with controller it's basically a cylinder with a airline ran to it in a remote control that you can use to press the brake all the way down while you bleed it I'm sure that you could find it very handy in your shop if I can find the name of it or the link for it I will add it on here or if you want to find the video I believe it's the recent video he just did with a snow plow truck.

The question about why some cars sitting seam fine with little work while others (the ones you get) are a mess. Not considering some people fake it, I have a 1981 Corvette 3rd gen that sat untouched for 10 years and a 1947 Dodge D24 that sat in a yard for roughly 20 to 25. The Corvette I have literally had to strip back to the fiberglass and frame, nothing rubber was usable and there wasn't a single wire in the harness I wasn't sure would start a fire. The Dodge got a new battery, points, and broke loose one stuck valve. I now drive the dodge almost every weekend and the Corvette is still on blocks waiting for me to be motivated again. I have to think the quality of products when original, must be so so different. Thanks for another great video and teaching your son the good stuff. Tell Rocky we all say hello.

Hi Sleeper - Now I know you love those old Fords and I think 63 and 64 Galaxies are a great looking car - BUT I have found with any of the old Fords I've had kicking around here when I have any issues with the dizzy or the charging system I go strait to the one wire Chevy alternator and a ready to run distributor - Anyway I'm all in with the Galaxy and the old Ford Long Roof - Puppies are looking great
