The bridge was completed in 1977 meeting standards for that period in time. The cargo ship was just under 1,000 feet long, weighed over 1 million tons and traveled at 8 knots. Not many structures could handle that hard of an impact. Traveled the Francis Scott Key bridge often and it's a mile and a half long.

Tragic. When the bridge is reconstructed /replaced i hope a decent memorial is built for those souls lost.

Why is the relative talking about the family all travelling for visas instead of how much they loved and will miss the poor guy who died? That seems a really odd thing to say, like "oh, we can't all come there now" rather than "he was a much loved husband/son/father/brother and we will miss him very much" or words to that effect. Maybe its shock but its a really weird thing to say when your relative just had a tragic accident.

Why those workers were not alerted after mayday signal?

Bridge collapses from being hit by a ship are rare but they do happen. On the 27 of February 2024, a empty cargo ship hit the bridge supports of the Lixinsha Bridge in southern China. The bridge collapsed and two vehicles fell into the water and three other vehicles landed on the ship. Five were killed and one crew member was injured. In the past, there have been bridge disasters. The Tasman Bridge in Australia was hit by a ship and the bridge fell on top of the ship killing seven crew members and five motorists died from dropping 150ft into the water below. The supports of the Bold Street Bridge in Sydney Australia, were not hit by a ship but by a train. As the train approached the bridge it became derailed and slammed into the bridge supports. The bridge collapsed on top of the train killing 83 people and injured more than 200 others.

Passenger was found still clutching the inside door handle. Looks like he pulled on that handle til he drowned. Imagine the fear and panic of not being to get out, and the cab filling with water, and trying to hold his breath until he couldn't find the urge anymore and he inhaled nothing but water. Friend who is a cop there told me this.

In my opinion as a Master Mariner and Marine Pilot this accident could have been avoided if Master of ship and Pilots onboard allowed ship to maintain the speed of about 8kt's instead of slowing vessel down when power was restored x2 onboard ship. Ship would of passed under bridge at 8kt's. There was only light wind early in the morning so windage would not have affected the ship to a large degree. The slowing down of the ship caused the bow(front) of ship to veer to starboard(right hand side) thus causing the ship to collide with bridge foundation support. There was not enough distance from ship when it lost power to the bridge to safely stop the ship before the bridge. Best option in this scenario forget about dropping anchor and trying to slow down using engine. Rather focus on trying to maintain ship in navigation channel when power was restored x2 and with the speed of about 8kt's it would quickly pass under bridge. Once passed under bridge then drop both anchors to slow down ship and use astern engine movements to reduce speed when power back on. The natural thing to do is to reduce speed as fast as possible to soften any collision or grounding which might happen, however in this case it appeared to be the wrong decision.

Why didnt the two guys in the truck react to the mayday call? Do we know? You d hit the starter and at least try to get off.

They know why the ship lost power it has had this defect for some time. The ship was on charter to Maersk and contrary to International maritime law Maersk insist that crews must report defects to them before notifying the authorities. They have been warned about this illegal policy in the past because it allows Maersk to mitigate or cover up potentially dangerous faults or conditions onboard vessels.

Looking forward to Transport Safety Board's investigation report. We must learn from it so that such accident may never happen again. RIP deseased!!

No blame or anything, but i really wish there was a faster way for that dispatch to say "get everyone off the bridge NOW". Its not his fault but he used waaaay too many eords and took too much time to get that off, and i can pnly hope the communication to the workders wasnt as tedius as who even knows kf they spoke English to understand such a ling ajd complex sentence. There should be a code or a simple command "evaccuate the bridge!!" Or an alarm system onnthe bridge thay can flash and go off and let people on it to get off now. Sigh.
