I always thought that fuel filters were a redundant redundancy in the marine world. Also, every large ship today using bunker or diesel should have a fuel polishing setup on board treating the fuel before it's delivered to the engine. It would be an added cost, but really just a drop in the bucket when you look at the total package.

600 ships disabled due to contaminated fuel in 2022 ? That is mind boggling. I have seen corrupt entities who went to jail for deliberately setting up plant to blend counterfeit diesel (15 - 20 years ago) and selling it in bulk to Gas stations. They were blending 30 - 50 % diesel with kerosene or heating oil and truck engines were blowing up due to it. There is alot of awareness about fuel quality for on-road equipment so you can imagine how much worse it must be for shipping ? Every ratbag gangster must have been doing this thinking there is less regulation and more temptation for ship owners to cut costs and buy "cheap fuel" , especially when a ship can use tonnes of fuel , not gallons. Nice video guys !

Even seeing & hearing Sal, talk about Baltimore and the Baltimore ports & other topics that involve the Key Bridge being GONE and how it effects the shipping industry around the ENTIRE PLANET & MOST IMPORTANTLY how it effects Baltimore, the City I love & was raised in, still doesn't feel real.... I have drove over that beautiful Key Bridge, COUNTLESS TIMES, sometimes 4-5 crossings a day when I was working for Amazon's logistics hub on the Anne Arundle County side of the Key Bridge... My house is about 1 "Naticual" mile away from the Key Bridge & I was able to go out to a point in my neighborhood & see the Key Bridge laying in the water, only 2 hours after the collapse.*

Fuel contamination is a big issue in OTR Trucking! When the shift from 2500PPM to 1500PPM of Sulfur ratio: 1) Pump & Injectors Seals for "old" Fuel to "new" fuel, began to shrink and leak!😮 2) Loss of power via Detonation before combustion😮 3) After ULSD 500PPM, Caterpillar stopped making OTR Engines.😮 Plus the long term / historical accumulation of Algae that breaks Injector Tips.😮

Aviation fuel is filtered with separate distinct filters every time the product changes from one container to another. Example: delivery truck or pipeline to airport storage the fuel gets filtered. Airport storage tank to aircraft fueling truck, the fuel gets filtered. Aircraft fueling truck to fuel going to aircraft, the fuel gets filtered. After watching TimBatSea Channel where he delivers bunker fuel to container ships, etc. I always wonder about the quality of this fuel. I never see any evidence of filtering.

@robpeters5204
@robpeters5204 20 днів тому
Great episode Sal!!! Contamination is a real thing. We take a lot of things for granted but in this case contamination is very real threat. There are fuel filters, pre fuel filters, water separators for these engines before it enters the fuel transfer pump which has ultra tight tolerances. With these extreme high pressure fuel systems having any debris of any kind can and will shut you down especially diesel engines or bunker oil engines. 600 ships put out of service is definitely no joking matter. Having an uncle in the trucking business and me loving it also from being 7 years old. I learned about contamination from him. Any time fuel is being transferred younrun a high chance of having some form of contamination. In these large vessels and the large amounts that are being pumped, ther is a high probability of getting “dirt” into the fuel system. That is why there are so many filters on the engine itself because coming from the refinery it is not always 100% so the filters are there to catch any foreign matter that might have been collected along the way. Also the hoses can pick up dirt or foreign debris from dragging on the ground especially if the area where they stow it isn’t clean or the yard didn’t put the cap on the end of the hose to keep dirt from getting in. Transferring fuel in the heavy rain you can pick up bits moisture which will shut down almost immediately. Cleanliness is not only godliness but it is very important to your engines fuel system. That is why your local mechanic always tells you to keep your vehicles air filter, fuel filter and oil filter on a regular scheduled intervals and don’t cheap out on parts or you too will be on the side of the road at 2 am in a rainstorm . Love your videos Sal. You keep us informed with actual and factual news. Much respect bruddah!

Hello, Just like to say thank you for your coverage. One thing I am seeing is the speed that companies have come together and seem to be working together. Thank you.

This was incredibly informative, thanks to you both! Not really related to the topic, but that accent makes me nostalgic for my visits with friends from MA. Cheers to you, William.

Thanks Sal I feel much better about the whole situation now after this video. Seeing the progress and hearing more about the support for the port workers makes things a little better. Still a lot of work to do. Hoping that they find the missing workers soon and that the survivors can have some closure and rest a little easier. I saw one snapshot of one of the work trucks being recovered and I still don't know if it was factual or not. Kind of sad that so many YT people are trying to cash in on the situation.

Sal, a huge thank you to you and to Mr. Doyle for this excellent update. I am a helpless landlubber and have been thoroughly enjoying your excellent presentations that help to explain the complicated maritime world. Also, the other day you did a very civil response to Peter Zeihan. I like Peter and listen to his videos, but I very much appreciate challenging him on his numbers when appropriate. And that, sir, you did.

Another great video. For a layman, not involved i the maritime industry j find these podcast really interesting and inormative. I never realised how complicated it all is 😮

I really want to know about the engineering behind the salvaging. It's one thing to design a bridge, but another to take one apart, with unknown stresses. We didn't learn that stuff in college.

Great coverage of the horrible event. I hope that additional strong bunkers will be put in place around critical pillars of the new bridge. So that such a thing doesn't occure again. Or at least lessens the odds of it.

Protection cells and dolphins are critical components to the structural integrity and safety of bridges that cross navigable waterways. They are often robust sheet pile structures, reinforced with steel and concrete.
