The crew on the Dali isn’t leaving the area for a very long time. Will they be trapped forever if the ship can’t go back out in the ocean again after unloaded?

There is an automation push in the Chinese shipbuilding market, it would be an interesting topic to discuss in the context of other big shipbuilding countries.

Thank you for your coments on the unified command. I've seen incident command functions in the hospital setting and in practice its seems to be somewhere in between a single authority and a "unified" operation. If the players are all dedicated to the BEST results, rather than the power of their sector (as it should be), the "first among equals" tends to naturally emerge with the acceptance of all involved. Everyone involved in this operation is to be commended, especially if they have done the professional thing and united behind the most effective person, in this case the captain of the port. This will surely be studied and provide lessons learned in terms the actual work and the leadership functions.

problem is ships are outgrowing shipyard infrastructure and lack of investment into new area Japan and South Korea are running out of land and poor renewal of its population. and US is coming closes to be DW when it comes to shipbuilding, as it is hard work and too "low pay" for Gen laZy.

Life aboard a CG buoy tender is not glamorous, but it is very important. They also serve as icebreakers in some New England ports and harbors. I've seen them in action, in Maine waters.

This is the best decision for the safety of the work crews. Heavy structures twisted and at odd positions are very difficult to understand the loads and stresses. Steel under stress/ load can do unexpected things, when the steel is cut and the load/ stress changes. Large structures also have an enormous weight, which can squash a person like a bug. No need to add to the death toll. No need to make an already dangerous job worse.

In my Humble opinion as someone who watches and Listen to the Great one (SAL) 😊 I so much enjoy and hope the powers incharge are Listening to him. Hopefully In my mind why doesn't the Army look at CRUISE ships being taken out of service Now hear me out. The BIG cruise industry is always looking to one up the other on guests. Get people to stay on ship spend money on board instead of at land. When you look at many of these new mega cruise ships. My gosh the inside cabins have a window looking down at a carnival type mainstreet in the very center of cruise ship. So the older smaller cruise ships that don't have in the 3 to 4 thousand guest paying passengers. "WHY" cant the Army look at some if these older cruise ships as deployment berthing and removing some of the cabins or converting to ammo storage or just bulk carry of what the Battalion needs might be. These cruise ships are ASKED for like in Hurricane Katrina and sandy hook very extensive damage area on land. I mean can they at least look at some of these cruise ships 😊 The Coast Guard converted a older hull into a new type of off shore patrol vessel. YES cruise ships don't have Roll off Roll on type of hulls. But thats were older British type English channel crossers could be overhauled for heavy equipment that the Military uses. Whats the cost to maintain these old cruise ships versus a brand new build of multi purpose vessel for Army ready Reserve fleet. Back in 1975 my commander got so made at me, because I wanted to change from recon scouts to a Army Mariner 😊 I wanted to spend 6 years on the water. Not just shooting wasting Ammo out at summer camp. I saw how the powers to be, alway shyed the new soldiers AWAY from anything Army is Land your NOT a Sailor. The CO screaming at me because First Sargent knew I wanted to be on a vessel. The CO very much down talking to me said, then why did you not go into the Navy, I will make your life hell, you will do KP for the 6 years you are under my command. The powers to be don't want new Soldiers to PICK maritime as there duty station.

Meanwhile I wonder how much of the cargo in the containers has spoiled during the delay if it had a shelf life. And how many production delays has the shortage of the components in many containers caused. I imagine this blunder has caused a lot of grief to many industries.
@SteveWray4 години тому
Well, you have to ask, how much money do these ships actually make? How much revenue do they generate just sitting out there loaded up with stuff doing nothing? My guess is not very much. Seems like a gigantic waste of money. Same with the aircraft carriers tbh. Just imagine what a utopia the USA could be if all those trillions of dollars weren't being frittered away like this. Healthcare, infrastructure, education. The USA could be the greatest country on Earth, and not just by virtue of being the most belligerent country on Earth.

Remember how almost all the WW-2 built mine sweeping vessels broke down on way to the Gulf. They needed mine sweeping vessels so bady back then in early 1990s. The Navy Reserve training facilities just down the pier from my National Guard unit, had a old WW-2 mine sweeper they drilled with. Are Army unit actually gave the Navy are old ( FMS) bardge when we got a newer one. That had a harbor masters office ( in are unit the Harbor master was the person who gave us "A-OK" to leave the dock. The FMS also had berthing besides being a floating machine shop for complete overhaul of all the LCM-8s are Army National Guard unit was mainly filled with We had the sister ship like the one in movie fame ( Mr. Rodgers) we had huge crane for lifting LCMs on pier for bottom work. We had a huge fuel barge. And 2 other Big Tugs. A 65 footer, and a 100 footer. After I got out in 1981 the unit got those big type of modern LCUs. And a combo Tow/ tug boats. The poir Navy Reserves were only getting hand me downs from mostly the nearby Underseas weapons test range vessel ( 72 foot-1960 Era built torpedo retriever or the noise vessels) a Torpedo Retriever with big removable steel box on sternfull of sounding gear to listen at torpedo test runs. They put a small davit on stern to lower and raise the testing probs. When Banger changed to Trident sub Base. They moved the test Range up to Vancouver Island, Canada built the noise boats ( new builds) very advanced type vessels with complete Battery run when tests were done, so the vessel made "O" sound. They even had one that towed a Torpedo shaped tester, that made sounds like a sub would make. All the Torpedo are pick-up by Helicopter now. The Pilot has the record for the most Torpedo retrieved by his net from the water successfully 😊 he was such a nice and excellent 👍 Helicopter pilot. Aswered any questions I had. The biggest problem he encounters is commercial fisherman that don't want to stay off Range when a Torpedo is being shot.

This is an absurd situation for a tax haven country that receives the bulk of Apple, Facebook & Google’s international revenues. Wage competitiveness aside, the Irish navy should be at the height of its powers.

I would say, Sal, and I know I am going way out on a limb here, but those containers under the bridge deck on the Dali, I would say they are fully depreciated. I think you could probably buy those in a blind auction next month for a couple of thousand each. Proceeds going to the insurance company. 😎

its a joke what these guys have to work with... Respect for the crew, But y think the USA has to think a bit about the jones act... This bridge would have aready be removed by using european equipment.

Thanks Sal. You're consistently reporting on things I hadn't considered before. Ive learned I have a lot more to learn, which is valuable by itself.
@wyldhowl28217 годин тому
It's a lucky thing the hull did not break just from being karate-chopped by thousands of tons of falling bridge. (I suppose the containers collapsing under what hit them probably absorbed a lot of that force). Careful calculations needed to make sure it does not keep "sawing" at the ship as it falls away. Good luck to those working on this problem - it's enormous.
