The movie is pretty brutal, but the original novel and the comic series that it's based off of take things to a-whole-nother level. The novel and the comic (manga) both take their time to do individual flashbacks and show you who the characters were before coming to the island. Not only does it humanize even the worst villains, it makes it so none of the kids feel like hollow husks. These are real children with real lives and it makes every single death just that more soul crushing. Oh, and the art in the comic is hands down some of the most graphic, anatomically correct gore that I have ever seen committed to a page. It goes haaaaard.

Just to show what you’re missing from the book (or at least the manga that it’s a direct adaption of, still reading the full novel here), the girl that causes the lighthouse massacre doesn’t just think that Shuya is a murderer when she witnesses the accident with that hatchet, she’s schizophrenic with intense religious delusions and thinks he’s a **literal** demon. Mitsuko has a horrifyingly bleak backstory, Kiriyama is a gentle genius savant who gets serve damage to the part of his brain that controls empathy turning him into an unfeeling sociopath, and Nobu’s death is much, much worse. It deserves a streaming series sooo bad.

The murder charge was not for the classmates, it was for shooting Kitano (the teacher). If you like this film, you ought to read the novel. The author is TAKAMI Koushun. The novel has been translated into English three times. The one currently in print carries the title "Battle Royale Remastered" (I guess the new translation is the remastering), translated by Nathan Collins. The publisher is Haika Soru. There is also a fifteen-volume manga that plays up the sex and violence beyond what was in the novel. In addition, there is a one-shot spin-off manga, "Battle Royale: Angels' Border" about the girls in the lighthouse (before everything went bad, obviously).

@Tyson Gifford really, it's been a while but I was sure the book had him as a volunteer. Need to read it again.

@@drakeloki4214 I only read the book, and I remember all of that, like a scene where he is playing a violin and he like masters it and grows bored

Here's an interesting fact; This film was the inspiration in order to make The Hunger Games saga, starring Jennifer Lawrence. Moreover, I remember seeing this movie as a child, so you have to imagine how disturbing the death scenes were for a 9-years-old kid. Actually, I saw it with my whole family haha.

Apparently the writer of Hunger Games claimed she never heard of Battle Royale, yeah right

@@Paul-sl9zm Yeah she's full of shit, even though hunger games is pretty good she was clearly "inspired" by this.

Fun fact, this official name of this battle law in the book is called “Battle Experiment No.68.” Annually, 50 classes of ninth grade kids are chosen for the battle, so at any given point of the year a battle can be going on. It’s only for 9th graders though, if you make it to the 10th grade then you’re safe. Another change from book to movie, there is a time of death-requirement of sorts but not limit, in the movie the battle has a 3 day time limit, in the book the battles can go on indefinitely, as long as there is at least 1 accounted death every 24 hour period the battle goes on, if 24 hours goes by and someone still hasn’t died, then all the necklaces detonate.

The teacher didn't like her in *that* way... it was more like she was a daughter to him in his pov, since his real daughter was a piece of shit who hated his guts.
