Making NSF's 24/7 Starbase coverage possible requires long hours out in the Texas sun, and some great team members out there every day to keep the NSF Infrastructure working in less than ideal conditions for broadcasting. It's NSF's Membership program that makes all this possible. Das takes us behind the scenes; Members get daily exclusive content like this.

For those of you wondering about everything else on the trailer other than the solar panel, here's what I can pick up as someone who works in an industry with this sort of stuff: On the left pole closest to him are three small fixed cameras which are just used for general monitoring of the area around the trailer, and the thumbnail shows a PTZ camera (mounted upside down) on the top of that pole. The rounded enclosure on the other pole is a point-to-point communication antenna, which would be pointed back at wherever their local broadcast 'HQ' is located (with hardline internet connectivity), while the square enclosure on that pole probably contains one or more LTE antennas. The black dome on the right side is an Axis Q63 PTZ camera, also mounted upside down. All the boxes underneath the solar panel contain everything else needed to make the trailer work, such as the battery bank, charge controller, power supplies and inverters, network switch, etc.

Great explainer for the solar panels and shadows. I TOTALLY get the whole PPE thing. When I worked construction in Florida, I wore white T-Shirts while the rest of the crew walked around shirtless, cooking their skin. I also wore tinted safety glasses you could get for free off the nail truck. They laughed, called me "Ray Charles", but I DGAF.

The panels can also overheat and reduce their output. Bi-directional panels mounted parallel and not only get direct sunlight but also reflected light off the ground or a surface. Bonus with that is not surface for dust/debris to settle and lowered impact of heat from the sun.

@steveaustin2686 Місяць тому
Yeah, The Leipzig University of Applied Sciences did a study on solar panels and found that the bifacial solar cells produced the same or more power than the traditional flat faces pointing to the Sun. But they were looking at solar farms for power generations for the grid, so small portable applications like this, might need the flat face. The scientists planned on more studies to confirm their findings, so something for Das to keep an eye on.
@Veptis
@Veptis Місяць тому
The highway site was shown during stream (and I think members only video?). Maybe consider putting scaled down chopsticks on your communication tower. There is some resemblance with the truss structure. Your sun angle changes not only across the day - it's also across the year (zenith is highest in July). there is a table of optimal angle for solar panels - based on your latitude!

Next time you want to check your panel angle... take a beer can or soda can along. Hold it right on the face of a panel. Check the shadow it casts there, as opposed to something held up on the side of the panel. :)
@darrellmcever340
@darrellmcever340 Місяць тому
Face your panels South and tilt them up about 26 degrees directly towards the sun at solar noon when you have your smallest shadow.. Solar Noon is when the Sun is due South and as high as it can get in the sky. If you live in Northern Alaska I suggest a Generator. ;-)

Fun fact… you don’t want 90° at high noon… you sure would get the highest Watt numbers at that time but the Watt Hours aka Wh over the entire day will be lower compared to having it “steeper” to get more before and after high noon :)

Simplest solution for solar panels is to just oversize the panel. Way cheaper to buy a 30% larger panel than to buy and maintain a tracking mount for it.

I use a cheap 12 inch speed square and set it on the panel. Check it at solar noon for your exact location. If you want an easy mount to adjust, find an old c/ka-band satellite dish mount (the big 10 foot dishes). The actuators have 24 volt DC brushless motors and are strong.
