"don't go to sketchy areas and you will love it here". best advice which holds true for almost all places. nice video and good luck.

@@FrederikEngelmand not really. As I said, it's an old phenomenon that goes back centuries. You wouldn't want to go through some areas of Frankfurt at midnight in the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, 1900s and 2000s as well

I'm Korean male and lived in Germany for 2 years. I've never had any racist encounters there (at least to my face). Maybe bc I'm 180cm tall 80kg guy? Most people like to pick on small women for attention. But Germany was one of my favorite places to live. I would plan to go back when I can to Berlin.

As a Finn, I wonder how many of those stuff are from germans vs "non-germans" and the sketchy areas have exploded and become a problem not just in Germany but in Europe in general past decade, thanks to bad/sloppy immigration policy and lack of willingness to intervene, for one reason or another. ...and now there are segregated areas in Europe, which have just increased the issues. (Sweden & Malmö is best example). Currently the north countries like Finland are looking into having immigration (school & work) mainly focused from Asian countries, as there is smaller cultural difference and less issues in general. when it comes to tipping, it has never been a thing in European countries it has always been optional (it has mainly been a USA thing)....my guess is that in some places are just scamming tourist for more money, which happens everywhere in the world
@Kenin2000
@Kenin2000 Місяць тому
Thats what i think, too. Obviously there are some racist germans too, but i think generally the worst behavior comes from the MENA migrants / refugees. In their culture violence isnt condemned like in western or east-asian cultures. Obviously religion plays a part here, too.
@Sasha-xv6do
@Sasha-xv6do Місяць тому
@@Kenin2000 Yes, you don't even see many germans in Frankfurt anymore in the crowded areas. All I hear there is english, turkish, arabic, ukranian and sometimes asian languages from tourists who get a shock of their life from the 'walking dead zombies' when they walk trough the Hauptbahnhof area 😂 I mean I can't even count all the 'racist attacks' I get as a german here in germany from this islamic people here. I'm pretty sure that over 95% racist attacks against asians come from those people and the rest from 'real germans'. Most germans worship people from japan and korea due to anime and K-Pop and how culturally and respectful they are.

Actually the area around the main train station in Frankfurt, the so called Bahnhofsviertel, is a sketchy area for a very long time now as it is a red light district and is also Germanys hotspot of homeless drug addicts. For this same reasons it is also a crime hotspot.

as a fellow Asian in western Europe, and that used to be a server, next time you can just tip 5% or just a single euro to show them that you know the etiquette, and that you decided to be cheap because they are a liar.
@hmvollbanane1259
@hmvollbanane1259 Місяць тому
Tipping is completely optional in Germany and you only tip good service. Also you don't tip owners and their family in Germany but only employees. A waiter that demands a tip will get nothing from a German other than a scathing scolding and perhaps a demand to speak to the owner

Thank you for sharing! Asians in Australia get the same treatment too, been here for 20 years, it's maybe worse here, whether in sketchy or non-sketchy areas. Love the word "sketchy"! I still feel German culture and German people are extremely respectful of others, as far a western societies go, as long as you speak German to a decent level, so I'm planning to move to Germany next year!

zoie, as a German I am really sorry that you had to make such scary experiences. As an employee that worked twenty years in a Japanese company in Munich I never heard such complaints from any Japanese colleague ever. The company I was working in had also a very close relationship to a Japanese School in Munich and the work there seemed really to be very good.OK. i am not an expat and even not nearly as beautiful as you are. But in my opinion life in Bavaria - in this case Munich - would be maybe much less rassistic.I actually don't know but I assume so. Hope you really can enjoy your life here in Germany. And thanks for sharing your experiences here with us.

How hard would you say German is to Learn in comparison to English? Also as an American working and living in Japan it amazes me how tame sketchy Japan areas are compared to America's sketchy areas. I walked through Kabukicho alone at night once without being under threat (except for guys hounding me to go to their bars), but there is no way in hell I would drive, let alone walk through a similar area back in the states.

Yeah germans saying all asians are chinese. Its because they dont know. Because they cant tell the difference between asian countries. The people that have higher intelligience would never say you are chinese and say ni hau. My japanese friends in germany sadly be treated like this too. Iam sorry that they said this to you. But in Japan I heard people think that all foreigners are americans. but dont saying anything dumb like in germany. Its still not good like this too. I hope you could still enjoy being in germany. Zoie talks and gets mad just like any German I know. Me, being twice as old as Zoie and being a native German, I consider her being thoroughly "germanized". But she does not look that way. Which may sometimes be very confusing for Germans my age. When I was young, people looking like Asians or black or looking different in any other way usually were strangers, not understanding the local language or customs. That has changed. A lot. I only recently quit talking to those "unusual" people in English because I kept being asked to switch to German. If she talked with the waiter in English he might have taken her for an American visiting Germany. Doesn't excuse his behaviour though.

I was already guessing that you lived in frankfurt when you told your story about the guy during covid. I'm guessing you worked somewhere near the Hauptbahnhof and had to commute through the streets towards your job? Those streets creep me out as well. One wrong turn and you're suddenly in a junkie infested street.

I think it really depends on where you live and which Asian you are. I live in Bonn for 5 years and am Malay and honestly I've never had any of that happen to me. Maybe because I'm always with my toddler and everyone is just so helpful and never fails to lend a hand when they see me struggling. Of course with a toddler I never end up in a sketchy area so maybe that's y I've always had a good experience and no noticeable racism in family friendly areas. Also Asian doesn't always mean Chinese/Korean/Japanese so Indians for example will also have a different experience from the Malays and we don't get any ni haos from anyone. Just wanted to point out that being Asian is a BIG generalization and different ethnicities experience things differently.

dont get scammazed, you dont have to tip. hopefully you can learn our language more, so people dont feel like screwing you over. its very horrible in some places. here in the ruhr area you go to middle school with people from 50-60 different nationalities. so naturally you grow up in a multi cultural environment. for me other cultures are more interesting, and it really also makes me mad when you talk about some of you experiences. but dont get scared off, some of these people had no education, or proper parenting. they look at people from asia and dont see the differences, and nuances in the people in general. id always ask where the person is from, ive gotten into random chat with people in the park so often. now ive got a mate from nepal, and i love to hear his stories. im german, and trust me i was bullied in school for my long hair and character, even we are not save from this stuff. in the grocery store there is idiots who are so disguting that you cant just be silent, cause of how disrespectful they are. it can happen, and ive had to learn myself to not let it get to me too much. hope you find the right company who sees the value in you, and appreciates you. finding the right place to live in germany can also be challenging. there was a case of a school child during covid, where the teacher told this small kid he is at fault that the covid doesnt stop. he went home traumatized, and didnt want to go back to school. you can watch on Carster Stahl youtube channel about this topic, he actually reached out to this teacher, and told her to never do that again or there will be legal consequences. many insane people during that time. wish you all the best here!!!
