Beirut - Live at Tempodrom, Berlin - ARTE Concert

A joyous return to the stage for Zach Condon and his European folk-focussed indie project Beirut. This is music as imagined landscape, a romantic sweep of Europe's past through the eyes of an American troubadour. From his Balkan-tinged debut in 2006, through a bohemian France dreamed up on 2007's The Flying Cup Club and on towards the Dutch and Mexican influences of his later material, Beirut is clearly the work of a singular vision while remaining hauntingly familiar, a half-remembered dream of a past life. Latest album Hadsel was inspired by a short time spent exiled in northern Norway, an emotional return to form released in 2023.

I travelled from Brazil to see the 3 concerts he played over there in Berlin. Such a magical moment. What Beirut did here was something for the ages, something very special! ❤ I was in the front row on the first night. It was a very special atmosphere to see them live again after such a long time. It was a mixture of euphoria and melancholy. Zach was a little nervous during the first songs, but he gave everything and Beirut just blew us all away. I met some great people and Ben even gave me the setlist at the end of the show 🙏🏻 I get goosebumps when I think back to that night.

I was at the first show of the three-night run. It was really special and there was definitely a particular excitement in the air, knowing this would be their first show in quite some time and also the only shows for the foreseeable future. Zach was nervous, but that made the entire performance feel more genuine and endearing-though he was flawless, as always, and got more and more comfortable as the night went on. Definitely was a night to remember and the best show I've seen from them.

The Rip Tide sounds amazing with the more active percussion! I'm also glad Spillhaugen made the cut. It's my favorite song off Hadsel, but I always figured it was more of a deep cut type of track.

Minor point as they played the same set every night (with the encore in a different order each time) but I think this is the February 17th show, not the 16th like the description says. I only remember there being cameras on the 17th, and I didn't see the Brazilian flag you can see here on the 16th either.
