Two world wars in the span of forty years was a tragic time in the 20th century. They took millions of lives and destroyed tens of millions more, while cities stood in post-war ruins. Architects were tasked with reconstruction, development and construction, but the Soviet authorities limited the flight of artistic imagination. Everything that violated their “standards” were labeled “architectural excesses”. Ukrainian architects had to resort to tricks and compromises in order to create something unique and leave their mark in architecture.
The documentary series "Between the Droplets" examines how the culture of Ukraine survived in the Soviet Union. In those dark times, a creative approach helped to circumvent and defeat censorship. Fortunately, not all pro-Ukrainian people were imprisoned in camps and mental institutions. In fact, there were many professionals working to study the rules of the game - and “between the droplets” - preserve Ukrainian culture.
