We got almost 20" of new snow from the blizzard over couple of days. It was time we went out to the overlook and it was really piled up! I'm glad we went out as we are also expecting more snow. The John Deere 624K is the right machine and we're very fortunate to have it to keep the mountain roads open. More snow is coming!

This should be my last comment on this video, just wanted to let you know I came on your channel by accident and I'm glad I did. It is one of the most enjoyable video channels I have seen. I'm 75 now and unable to work but I moved heavy equipment and oversize loads all over North America for about 45years and to be able to sit and watch something I thoroughly enjoy is very soothing. Thank you for your time doing these videos and I'll be sure to look for other ones. God Bless!

Wow 45 years!! Thank you for your service to your country. I know thats usually reserved for military members but people like you make America the great country it is. Weather you are keeping the roads clear for the trucks that transport food and merchandise or driving those said trucks without you America would collapse so thank you for 45 years of your life in service to your country and fellow Americans!

Really nice report. However, after watching you clear snow with your hands, I'm hoping that someone gives you a broom for your birthday. It was great to see how beautiful the whole area is. You gave us a unique tour of the gorgeous Sierra foothills.

Same thing I was thinking. I am also OCD. I would have removed all the snow off your vehicle to reduce weight. I agree with the person that said to plow drifts in opposite direction so winds won’t cause increased height if your drifts!! Is that ALL YOUR LAND??? It is gorgeous!!! Looks like you live in Gods Country!!! It takes a lot of machinery to take care of a spread that big!!!

Beautiful country. BTW: Your plow blade is engineered to push the snow off to the right. The ‘funnel’ end will discharge the snow further away from the edge of the road with a sloping bank.

I found this so relaxing and peaceful. A world away from living in the big city but a reminder of some times spent in the Sierras in my youth. I felt like I was there on your mountain, or God's mountain really...it felt that way. I can still imagine breathing in some mountain winter air. Amazing sense memory that is just a breath away. Thank you!

I lived in the mountains for many years, both Sierra Nevada, and then Oregon, and this brought back some dear memories. I used to commute 40 miles to work, over the summit on I-80, and many times while the hwy was still being cleared. (Even closed, they let me, a local through.) It made me smile when you said you moved there from North Dakota, while I moved from there TO se ND. Thanks for taking me along on the trip. I LOVED being on the mountain roads in winter.

Hello from a former North Dakotan, I grew up in the Red River Valley. I too remember a few good blizzards growing up! Love the Shelter Belt reference, if I remember correctly at one time Grand Forks County had the most Shelter Belts than any other county. I do know that a lot of farmers have removed quite a lot due to age/die off and for more tillage.

If you can still get it through your gate, a cheap trick we used to do is scrounge a piece of conveyor belting to bolt onto your plow blade at the left edge. Heavy belting in an arc is surprisingly strong and will grab or kick quite a lot of snow. Thus widening your path but still flexible around trees, posts and rocks.
@almosthomeranch8447
@almosthomeranch8447 3 місяці тому
Alan, I really like this idea! Do you roll a belt around a loop and bolt it back to the blade? Do you have any pictures as this is a good idea. thanks so much!
@alanwhite4456
@alanwhite4456 3 місяці тому
@@almosthomeranch8447 The application really depends on what width and thickness of belting you can locate. Typically, it runs about 3/8” to 3/4” thick and can be a myriad of widths. Let’s say you found some 3/8” thick x 24” wide. That would likely be pretty flexible and you might not be able to extend it very far. Let’s say your plow blade arc measures 40” from the top of the cutting edge to the top edge under your rubber flap. You would want to cut a 40” x 24” piece and lay it in against the end of the blade, with the 40” length running vertically. Try clamping it down temporarily with a couple large welding type clamps near the top and bottom. Then experiment with how much you have extended out beyond the end of the blade and still have it quite stiff. Remember, the snow exerts a lot of pressure, so the thicker and stiffer the belting, the better (to a point that is). We found it’s best to use a piece 3/16” or 1/4” steel strapping, hammered to match the blade arc to bolt thru on top of the belting to help prevent tear-out. Keep your bolts fairly close together (like 6”), but that spacing will depend on the belting’s thickness. Also, you don’t want to bolt very far away from the inboard edge of the belting to prevent snow from wedging underneath. Sorry, I sold my plow so no pictures. Hope this helps!
@alanwhite4456
@alanwhite4456 3 місяці тому
I just thought of another pretty important tip, be sure to bevel the inboard edge of the belting to help snow slip up and over the belt’s thickness. If the belting does not have steel reinforcing in it, you can bevel that edge with a circular saw. Cheers!

A few more very heavy snowfalls and high winds filling in the roadway and even that machine won't be able to clear the road. with the blade. Only a snowblower can move the material far enough away that the machine is not working against itself.

That blade is designed to be winged to the right at all times. The funnel helps throw it farther. Looks like you would really benefit having a snow blower in that machine. Would take longer to clear the road but the benefit of throwing it far it always a huge plus. I habe a little 4066r deere with a pronovast cyclone blower. Throws it about 75-100’.

We have an old-time V-blade on our 1960 Hough loader...not that new hydraulic "split" kind they have for trucks. It works best when you maintain speed..We make a single higher-speed pass downhill and the snow curls up a good 4-6' high before coming off the blade. If we need to do pushbacks..we'll take a pass up the hill again with 1/2 the blade and down again on the other side with the other half of the blade. We just got lucky that the V-blade came with the loader when we bought it. It's the single best implement we could put on it. We plowed prior with an IH tractor and plow, and it was tedious but do-able. If you can find an old V-blade..I strongly suggest you get it and have a shop weld a QA to it for the loader.

Fellow North Dakotan here, that is a lot of snow to push. Good choice of equipment. Looks like you're doing a great job. If I have one piece of advice that will save you lots of time, let the wind do the work. Push the snow to the side of the road to where the wind does not blow it back onto the road. ... On your second pass, try to only use 75% of your blade to push the snow. Otherwise you end up pushing snow onto your cleared area.

Nice scenery, but youre lucky that you know, or assume you know where your road is. I wish I could cruze in 100% confidence with any heavy equipment driving though a no cell phone service or 2-way radio zone area if I were to get sunk or rolled over in a ditch; and yes takes 2 seconds for it to happen. This reminds me of the movie The Shining, and your the star. I worked as first responder for 15 years and I got tired of pulling stiff popsicles out of cars & snow banks. Be safe my friend. Be safe..
