My sad story is - I moved to NYC in August 1980. I had already seen many jazz shows before moving there, but now the world was my oyster. One of the first weekends I had a choice. Bill Evans or Tommy Flanagan. The Evans show had an admission charge, Flanagan was the price of a beer or two, so being young and poor, I saw Tommy Flanagan. The death of Bill Evans on September 15, 1980 shocked me, of course. Even worse, I would never get to see Bill Evans play! I must have seen Tommy Flanagan 50 times over the next 10 years, at Bradley's on University Place and many concerts. I even saw him once on the upper East Side, I was the only one there! He played solo and knocked my socks off with walking chords! Thank you for 7 hours of Bill Evans! RIP.

Piano geniuses like Bill Evans only occur once in a life time. His piano compositions take you to a place where you have never felt before. At the end of the day it seems there is no where to escape. Then there is the music of Bill Evans that makes everything not seem so lost in The hectic world we live in.

I was lucky enough to see him when i was eighteen in 1963 at shelly's manne-hole in hollywood with chuck israels and larry bunker. It was about a year after scott lafaro had passed and bill was very fragile and not in the best of health but it's something i'll never forget.... The most beautiful evening of music i ever experienced in my life. What a gift he was to all of us!

One thing I've come to appreciate in music and particularly when I listen to Bill Evans is that I never lament his passing, even if some say it was too soon, because who are we to say. It only means we need to treasure and love those we have when they are present. I feel loved by God every time I listen to Bill Evans. It's a reminder to me that he manifests and transforms the divine presence every time we play his music, and it is alive!

living in the bay area, a friend and i went to see the bill evans trio at the intimate keystone corner on one of those september evenings. it was fantastic. i rarely use this phrase, but his playing was at times transcendent - you could feel it from the sounds he was producing with that piano. we were sad to hear that he had died the following week, and made it a mission to try and see as many other artists we had put off seeing "for another time" because they can and will go at any time. the keystone corner had so many incredible acts during its run - bill evans was one of the many that performed there.

I knew Mr. Evans back in the mid-fifties when he was scuffling in New York City. He was always a kind soul with the public and musicians. I was lucky enough to be in the (really noisy) house at the Village Vanguard, hanging at the bar thanks to the generosity of Mr. Max Gordon, the owner, for two sets at the Sunday recording of the seminal recording with Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro. Unforgettable. A twenty year drug induced suicide, Harry's passing, and ambition is what brought Mr. Evans, one of America's fabulous improvisational musicians, to an early death. His music will speak to generations of fans who enjoy improvisational music and jazz musicians.

@caponsacchi6 років тому
Re: the piano sound. It's absolutely true that this recording of an excellent piano-- perfectly regulated and tuned--is a rare opportunity to hear Bill playing on an instrument worthy of his genius. Moreover, these recordings--from Aug. 31 to Sept.8--represent Bill's "valedictory," a final record of the "truth and beauty" that had been the object of his pursuit (as he told Tony Bennett) all his life. It's extraordinary playing, and the thunderous bass and ringing treble of the piano sound simply cannot be heard on Bill's RVG (Van Gelder) recordings on Verve and Impulse or on some of the dates forcing him to play a dead instrument. The complete recordings of Bill's first sets for all 9 nights was released as "Consecration" in 2004, or several years after the complete recordings of Bill's 2nd sets each night, which were released as "The Last Waltz" in 2000. The music brings to fruition Bill's evolving from an impressionist artist (the nuanced Debussy-like music of the LaFaro trio 1960-61) to an expressionist artist, evoking late Romantic composers like Chopin and Rachmaninoff. Bill sheds light on this journey with Marian McPartland on NPR's "Piano Jazz," in late 1978, which is available on CD. There is controversy re: this music as well as suppression of the two complete box sets. Any Bill Evans fan will want to look hard for both sets and be willing to pay extra. One nagging question: did Bill really play a 2nd Monday ( Sept. 8) as claimed in the notes of "The Last Waltz" or did he wrap things up on Sept. 7, as claimed in the notes for "Consecration"? My research supports the claim of the first set to appear--i.e. he DID play an extra night, on Sept. 8, thus making his return to NYC, where he died on Sept. 15, all the more remarkable (and placing into doubt some of the published reports of his final days).

This will always be a poignant companion set to the final Village Vangard sessions recorded shortly thereafter and then he died. For ages, this collection was unobtainable due to licensing issues in the US. I was working at Tower at the time these came in, just three sets, and we couldn't put them out for sale. I finally bought them as an employee, kept one and gave one to guitarist John Abercrombie whose musical trajectory and choice of sidemen shadowed Evans' in many ways. The insight into these recordings I got from his commentaries was invaluable; he pointed out the rhythmic aspect of these performances, stylistic decision that hinted to directions he may have gone in had he not died so tragically shortly thereafter. Thanks for putting these out there!

Francis Moore this intro of Emily he does is such a dense, saturated, moving mass of thick meshing confusion compared to his other performances. So interesting to hear his iterations of his favorites on and off drugs. He was still so unreal either way

as with any great artist Evans was able to allow complexity a generous space, to give enough space to the music to roam in so that it creates its own order, a natural order, and complexity thereby is recast as a "condition of complete simplicity'

by the night disc 3 was recorded you can tell how much in love Bill was with the piano in his playing- much more confident and playful. It's a kind of joy I rarely hear on some of the studio ventures I've heard that the out of tune keys were glaringly obvious! Bill even says, at the end of disc 1, "They got me a good piano and good sound..." Which is something a master level virtuoso pianist with a sharp critical ear hardly ever says, even of concert hall Steinways, more often than you'd think! Thanks for uploading this gem and thank the Jazz gods there were 8 CDs worth of great quality settings so the man could really shine... *Incidentally, I did a couple nights at Keystone about almost 30 years ago. I can attest to the fact that they truly loved their guest musicians. To this day I can't recall ever being treated so nice almost anywhere else. When places like that go you know it's the end of an era...

Amazing how Bill can always brings us to a beautiful, profound familiar place over and over, ocasionaly surprising us with something we've never heard from him. As opposed to Keith Jarrett, who would constantly mesmerize us with fresh ideas and harmonic textures way beyond the confinements of Jazz or even Classical. Well, Keith also had his familiar tricks. Sometimes I want to listen to Bill and experience the cozy, familiar "comfort food". Other times I want Keith's music and get lost in that maze of energy, light and sound.

During a trip to the Americas in 2008 I went around SF picking up all the vinyls I could find of Bill Evans. Some time later found me listening to them while doing peyote at night in the dessert near Real de Catorce, Mexico, on a batterydriven player connected to my car stereo. That did not sound right at all. Better to enjoy the coyotes singing in a circle all around us just out of sight. But whenever I run short of singing coyotes, Bill Evans is the next best thing.

Second, probably due to some mistake of mine, I cannot see the playlist of Disk 3. As I write all of Bill's playlists, I'd like to keep these records whole too, as it was done re the others. Please help me by showing where to find them. Thank you again.

Bill clearly did not look well the night I saw him at Keystone, but he played marvelously. I found out later MC Todd Barkan offered to bring in a doctor to the club; Bill declined. I don't think he ever got over his brother's death.
@peterj.andros39966 років тому
Well, you're probably correct about BE never escaping the death of Harry, but BE was an authentic druggy long before Harry died. Chalk up BE's addiction to bad influences from the black musicians he cavorted with in New York and the totally depressing neighborhood in North Jersey where BE grew up.

Grazie! Carlo
