Listening to this recording again with fresh ears in March 2021 during Covic-19, I can't help feeling that Bill, during the time this was recorded, had a feeling he didn't have long left to live.During the last two years of his life he played with such fire--as if he had a flood of music he felt he just must get out into the world before he was gone.His early death is such a tragedy. Now, we have lost Chick Corea to cancer and Keith Jarrett has had two strokes which have paralyzed him on his left side. He can no longer use his left hand. It is so fortunate all these giants have left us with monumental, sizable recorded legacies! We all know our time is limited on this plane, but when our idols go we are usually unprepared when they do.

Even though I recorded this where Bill graduated, Southeastern Louisiana University, I hear more every time I listen to it. I am so glad that has become of part of his history and the music is available to all be heard and shared by his fans.

I just returned from Southeastern Louisiana University to assist in planning the next Bill Evans Jazz Festival which will be held April 11-15. Evans graduated from SLU in 1951 and this recording was made at a concert he gave there a few months prior to his death. Ron Nethercutt, Retired SLU Professor

“Re: A Person I Knew”; (an anagram of Orrin Keepnews’s name) is sooo haunting! One of my favorite of Bill’s pieces! Bill’s playing on Kind Of Blue (“Blue In Green”, “Flamenco Sketches”) is what made me a pianist. I was blessed to have spent 3 hours one-on-one on his 2nd visit to L.A. at the Mannehole. I visited him at his motel north of the Capitol Records building. It was probably the most meaningful encounter of my life as a musician! I learned a great deal about my personal aesthetic in that meeting. Much of my memory about specifics of what was discussed has faded, but the aura of this three hours remains with me to this day. I miss Bill a great deal even now...

What a wonderful tale of Bill Evans. Thank you so much for sharing your personal story with him. How exciting and special. I am always thrilled to hear these types of "close encounter" stories from people. I feel these tales add texture and color to the past; details we would otherwise never know. Thank you, again.

I recorded this at Southeastern Louisiana University when Bill returned and played a concert where he graduated. Milestone was able to release it as a CD many years later. It is iconic since Bill spoke directly to the audience several times.

We can perceive an enormous Chopin and Debussy influence in his final 2 years, which was not common in the first Jazz albuns. I can´t even imagine if Bill Evans had lived for more 10 years, would have been amazing ! He was very mature.
@gabrielzygel15396 років тому
He has changed so much since the beginning ! It's very moving to be able to hear someone age, through their music. I can't stop wondering, where would he have gotten if he lived, like, ninety years old ?

I always loved this album because I could hear Bill talk between each song. It made me feel like I was at the concert rather than just listening to the studio version.

I love how Bill allowed the bass to be mic'd; so clear and prominent. His dedication to finding the greatest players for his trios was so much of his brilliance. This solo builds such incredible energy and anticipation... when Bill comes back in, it's like a freight train of pure beauty rolls into the room... ukposts.info/have/v-deo/qpaKYW-Fa2dprn0.html

I was very lucky to have been able to record this concert from two overhead mics in the SLU Music Auditorium. It gave a natural sound to the recording. There was a little overloading to the drums, so not as balanced as a studio recording. However, the history of Bill's only performance at his alma mater since he graduated in 1950, makes it most memorable.....and showed a remarkable performance of the trio.

For Bill Evans fans, I will be bringing many more Evans materials to the Archives at Southeastern Louisiana University, Bill's alma mater, in October 2019. I helped establish the archives at the SLU Library under the supervision of Dr. Sam Hyde. I was there last April and help clarify some of the exhibits.
