He was but 16 days from leaving us, bound for the ages. The notes he struck, much as with the words sung by Sinatra, will resonate within the souls of those who live centuries from now. No matter how debased the popular culture becomes, the effect of genius shall endure and thrive.

living in the bay area, a friend and i went to see the bill evans trio at the intimate keystone corner on one of those september evenings. it was fantastic. i rarely use this phrase, but his playing was at times transcendent - you could feel it from the sounds he was producing from that piano. we were sad to hear that he had died the following week, and made it a mission to try and see as many other artists we had put off seeing "for another time" because they can and will go at any time. the keystone corner had so many incredible acts during its run - bill evans was one of the many that performed there.

Touching story. So true. Iam thankful to have experienced seeing some of the greats who have passed on. I remember seeing bill evans at shelly's manne hole in hollywood in the sixties with chuck israels and larry bunker which is on record. It was not an easy time for him after scott lafaro had passed but his playing was gorgeous...loved the old keystone and saw dexter gordon, james moody, joe henderson and many others.

I go to the full box sets (16 CDs) of "Last Waltz" and "Consecration" (sept. 1980) more than the more celebrated first trio with LaFaro. Bill had emerged from Debussy "impressionist" to Rachmaninoff "expressionist," playing moreover with two younger musicians fully in accord with the pianist's vision--his left hand and "mental meter," respectively. Bill's anticipatory harmony required musicians who could, like him, think "ahead of the moving chords," not merely behind the beat or "in the pocket." In return, Bill was utterly devoted to them and never ever wanted to fail them on a single session, remaining too preoccupied to give a 2nd thought to a studio session. No need or gain.

Some of it sounds like nature to me - like cascading water or snowflakes which is probably why it is so soothing. Cannot get over how quickly he moves his fingers. What an incredible talent and gone too soon but his music will live on forever.
@richardwise72177 років тому
I add my thanks to you for putting this music on UKposts so that others may discover it. I am fortunate to live with the 8 CD's of this Last Waltz and most of his others work. It began when I bought an LP of Waltz for Debby in the late 60s. That amazing recording led me to seek out more of his work until his death. His play opened pathways to a wonderful range of feelings and a sense of life's values that continue to delight and amaze me.

Stop the oceans roar, Don't let the rivers run; Let me hear no more The wondrous music of the skylark in the sun; Let it be done. Turn out the stars: shut off their light, Stop every comet in it's magic lonely flight, Let there be night, Turn out the stars. [Gene Lees]

Rubato is Bill's forte. As time goes by, this touch will be more valued, as music becomes more simple and drone like, with inanely numb beats of rhythm. Bill likes to go up in key; this brightens every song he plays, which really contradicts the notion hat he's melancholy.

@BillEvansArchive7 років тому
No, it's not. I believe all people have the right to discover this legendary life path. And the only true way to do so is to listen to what the musician had to say through music. I made this archive firstly for myself, secondly for everybody who shares my admiration toward Bills genius. All the uploaded material are informal so if you consider yourself to be a true collector please buy your favourite albums from their record labels. I do not wish to make money with this channel, every uploaded content belongs to its rightful owner.
