I was playing in a restaurant once and a person walked past me on the way out and said “you must have listened to a lot of Bill Evans”. I couldn’t stop playing in order to talk with him. I would have loved find out what he knew.

I agree with everyone here. Bill Evans was the master improvisor and he's so great to listen to. Just don't count out the others who've contributed to this genre. Benny Green, Ahmad Jamal, Hank Jones, Cedar Walton, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Barron, the list is truly ENDLESS. It's a wonderful wonderful musical ART. I hope others discover it too. Jazz is alive and well!

Bill Evans has to be the greatest jazz pianist who ever lived. Even Miles Davis said he could do what nobody else could. I listen to him daily.
I listen to Bill almost every day for years now. Very nice addition to my life. Never get tired of his playing.

I can sometimes go a few days without listening to Bill, but that's about it. Same goes for my wife. I bought my first Bill Evans album in, I think, 1972 (the first Montreux album with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette). Still one of my favorites.

Bills play immediatly changed my life, when I coincidentally listened to "my foolish heart" at the first time. I was very much on heavy metal and punk rock at the time and somehow Bills music opened a new horizon for what music can be and feel. His play goes with me through all times since then.

I heard Bill in a Stern's Department store rug area on West 42nd street in NYC playing an old upright piano and to my amazement produced a typical Bill Evans piano sound. I can't imagine how he did it. Hearing his trio up close at the Village Vanguard turned out to be more my style.

This is the most vibrant and clear and energetic and complex version of Waltz For Debby I have ever heard and the piano instrument is exquisite...maybe it has something to do with the rarefied air of Switzerland...but actually Bill is at his height here......he steadily got more outstanding as the years went on...and this recording is one of the best he ever did...great audience! The energy was heightened and his chordal voicing were beyond amazing...perfect in every way and precise...full of dense expression and lush colors.

The thing that I love discovering about the artistry in a trio or a quartet is the magic that happens, and how someone like Bill Evans draws likeminded people into the realm of his play. For me it's the same in my work. Some people may have called me a jerk, or tell me to get the "stick outta my ***", but I just laugh it off because then I know I'm getting inside them, forcing them to grow. That's what I feel everytime I listen to Bill and his ensemble. Wondering how I will grow today and become a better person, to heighten my skills, fine tune my listening, and witness it to others. God bless Bill Evans and all his family and friends!

Bill Evans is really a head of his time. He introduced ( invented ) a totally new way of playing the piano, as a sort of answer to the Oscar Peterson-way. By doing this, he influenced the whole concept of jazz-piano. You can still hear it on practically all contemporary jazz-pianists.

It sounds definitely more spicy than Bill E. does to me. So i don't hear the connection. Would Bill Evans ever sing ? i don't think so.

@@ethanwasheretoo Even if that was possible, it still wouldn't be Bill Evans solo, as they all respond and play with each other when performing together, meaning their approach is very different from when playing alone. Each instrument is buffeted and shaped by the others in a synergised, sympathetic musical relationship.

Evans can repeat the tunes, but always a new palette, a new song... It sounds so fresh, so unique that the trio tells a whole new story! For example, Waltz For Debby sounds so happy in comparison when it was played in the Village Vanguard with Scott La Faro.

Yes. One of the most amazing things about Bill's approach to music is how much he valued spontaneity. The trio actually rehearsed even once in all of its existance. That is part o the reason the music is so good at transmitting the mood in which they musicians were in any given moment.
