This LED lamp is a quick project that can be done within a day. Only a few cheap components are needed to create a nice looking ambient lamp. No programming is needed, only the WLED firmware is uploaded to a micro controller via a simple tool. A 3D-Printed version simplifies the build process a lot but the cardboard version is also quickly made and can be made huge in size.
WLED is open source and provides many IoT interfaced including a web front end and an app that allows to control all the lamps in the local WIFI.

Built mine a couple of month ago, works great, pity I ended up with 4cm pingpong balls so had to recalc the tube size and the balls I got seemed to be thicker plastic so ended up drilling an 8mm hole in each one and putting the glue around the led and placing the hole over it, worked out well in the end. Really nice that some guy in Germany (I think) did a plugin for Domoticz so my home automation controller looks after it too. Thanks for such a great idea.

To make a perfect hole into the Pingpong Ball, you can heat up a drill and melt a circle into the ball. I did this for about 400 times for my LED-PingpongBall Matrix.
@neur303
@neur303 3 роки тому
Nice tip if one needs it, but are there advantages? I imagine that the second layer would help with diffusion. And most of the time the LEDs are too bright if not heavily dimmed.
@RawDR
@RawDR 3 роки тому
He certainly has experience with this, he's done huge led displays using ping pong balls and I believe for those he did make holes in the balls using a soldering iron. I'm sure he has his reasons for not doing that here although I'm not sure what they are. Maybe just for keeping it simple.
@bierhoch1011
@bierhoch1011 3 роки тому
@@neur303 yes it was a much rounder circle. with the soldering iron was the problem that the circle was slightly greater than I wantet it to be. but my soldering iron has not the ability to adjust the temperature. in my case the second layer was not supporting the diffusion. greetings.

I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible. I used holes on the ws2811 chains. the smd leds dont suffer much in brightness as the hotglue works like a lightpipe

Nice video and simple and easy design for the lamps. The only thing I didn't like was tinning the wires for a screw connector. Might not be a problem in this particular case but on larger lamps the supply wires can carry quite some current and you don't want an IOT-living-room-ignition device.

@@bitlunislab the first LED on the strip shifts the data signal level from 3V3 on the input to 5V on the output (it acts as a level-shifter). So, all you need when using 3V3 logic is to have the first LED as close as possible to the controller - which is not a problem in your case :)
@rgorazd
@rgorazd 3 роки тому
A simple solution is a pullup at 5V and an open drain output pulling the output to Vss. WS2812 need Vdd-0.7V at the first diode. Suplying a 3.3V as logical "1" will sometimes cause problems. If Vdd is slightly less than 5V, then is ok, otherwise not.

Nice video on the pingpong lamps, really novel idea! WLED is really awesome software for running addressable LEDs. I've actually made some plug-in boards called the QuinLED-Dig-Uno and QuinLED-Dig-Quad people can build themselves as a DIY project. If you want to run a larger amount of LEDs things can get a bit complex with power injection and such, I also tried to add some safety features like a fuse or convenience features like onboard level-shifters so using longer cables aren't a problem. Keep the great projects and WLED info coming! :D

It's so simple yet VERY POWERFUL!!! I can imagine pillars going from the floor to the ceiling in the corner of the room, with mirrors behind them up against the walls. They could be pulled away from the corner a bit and the mirrors would reflect the back side of the tube.... OHHHH, what if you put mirrors behind the ping-pong balls on the tube? You would have to cut the mirrors in pieces or strips to fit them in there, but the mirror doesn't have to be glass. You could make aluminum foil backed paper that has an adhesive layer on the back.... OR for the ULTIMATE ball tower you could made the tube out of flexible CLEAR plastic (like acrylic sheets that are thin enough to bend) then use some "semi-mirrored" plastic film to wrap the INSIDE of the tube... MY MIND IS RUNNING AWAY WITH IDEAS!!!!! - OH MAN!!! I wish I was in a position to buy these lights and controller... I know they aren't expensive but I'm on a VERY tight budget and I KNOW I would go over board!!!! LOL Re-creating Roman Pillars of ping-pong balls lights on the front of my house, with a ping-pong ball LED WALL in between them LMAO!!! ok ok ok... I need to calm down :D - This just looks like so much fun with such a simple Idea!!! This is just so creative!!! Thank you for opening my mind once again! :D
