@Peter-zg3em
@Peter-zg3em Рік тому
the inlet is where it will be the roughest. the waves break and rise up due to the shallow mouth and the outgoing current. the horizon and water do strange things in the heat. that's basically a mirage you're looking at, making those waves appear to tower over the ones in the foreground. in reality the worst waves are the ones you're looking at, right as they break. rolling swells are a lot easier to handle.

People go out when it's that bad because they've been convinced that "their boat," is the most seaworthy boat ever made. Every brand tries to say they have some secret, that other brands don't have, that makes their boats impervious to bad weather, and able to go out in anything, but a hurricane. They learn the hard way, that there's nothing adventurous about it at all.

Question: Is not going out on rough seas the best way to hone your skills piloting your boat on rough seas? I would like to think that there isn't really a replacement for actual time at the helm on actual rough seas, and I imagine that many of the people who go out in these conditions AND have the intention to learn from them become better seamen. It seems that a lot of people are unnecessarily condemned for going out in nasty conditions and I don't see why that is so in many if not most cases. Personally, the idea of going out in seas like this to practice and experience first hand what my boat is capable of is extremely fun and exciting. Yes, I know it may be more risky, but you can't put a price on the fun or the experience, can you? And besides...boating is inherently risky, rough seas or not. Please enlighten me/ tell me if you agree or not.

Just ran my Jupiter out of Boca last evening. Why wouldn't an experienced captain take these vessels out in these conditions? Everyone having a good time waving to the cameras. No one in distress. No one is panicked. Boats of this size were built to do just what they are doing. Not just wasting away so some hourly rent-a-boat chicks can ride up and down the river trying to get likes on social media. Thumbs up to the captain on the 42 Everglades. He had enough boat, but doubted his experience to run out front in those seas.

I consider myself an experienced captain and having a boat capable of withstanding the rough seas does not mean I want subject a million dollar asset to punishment that is unnecessary. Every time a wave peels out below you and your hull smacks the water there's a certain amount of stress from the impact that your boat receives.
@derjaeger3321
@derjaeger3321 Рік тому
Why tempt fate.? Yes the boats are built to take it but any little glitch may endanger people. Then someone has to risk their neck to save yours. An engine failure, a bilge pump glitch, a freak wave, a hatch failure - anything. Strong boats are only as strong as the weakest part. Also, the boats are generally more seaworthy than the passengers. Don’t ask for trouble.
