The original Boss RC-505 is seen by many as the pinnacle of loopstations, with countless musicians using it as a gateway to success during the 15+ years it's been available. Surely time for an update then?
Here's the RC-505 MKII then, with expanded IO, improved audio quality, increased FX (4 input, 4 track), more algorithms, increased record time - 13hrs over 3, bounce feature, Mark back and undo, more rhythms, way deep button and controller assignments.
We've multi-sampled a couple of the Drum Kits and made them available as Decent Sampler presets on our Patreon Page:
/ sonicstate
The RC-505 MKII really does build on the original while keeping the essential functions the same - that is five stereo tracks of loopers, with tempo detection, time stretch and lots of control.
Editor Nick is a first time RC user and takes us through the essential functions, and gives his verdict.
The RC-505 MKII is available now (in limited quantities) priced at £499/$599 street price.

About timestretch, you can also go into each of the 5 tracks and change Speed mode (something like that) to Pitch, then the track's pitch follows the time changes (if you speed up, the pitch gets higher, if you slow down, it gets lower). That maintains the sound quality without having that choppy aspect to it

Having tried the various loopers over the years, most of them I never warmed to, However, BOSS recently upped their game in a HUGE way. Sound quality is immediately apparent, as are the very good drum loops. So I have to try this one. I owned the RC10R (need to replace it) and the RC-5, both are very good . These loopers are IMO, in a different league than other companie's.

Nick mentions the possibilty to use an external sequencer drummachine which you had to sacrifice one track/channel for: Does it tempo sync to the external drummachine then? @ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 2 роки тому
The RC-505 is one of the best musical devices ... ever. SOOOO much fun. I think almost every musician should have one. The only real downside is the tendency to get stuck in short loops, since that's basically what it's built for. It's really hard to get much musical progression with this type of device, so it can feel pretty limiting for those looking to make longer compositions. But then, if the user often bumps their head on that, it probably means they've grown enough as a musician that they should get some sort of DAW. Aside from some early years awkwardly struggling with trackers, looping was the thing which really got me started with music. I've since moved on to use an Akai Force as the center of my studio, but a big part of why I like it is because it has a workflow very similar to a looper. But instead of 5 loop slots, it has an entire 8x8 grid, scrollable, so I don't have to bump my head on short loops any more. The RC-505 is good even for pros though, especially when you don't know what to make and want to come up with some new ideas. It's a great way to go from a blank mind to a detailed song sketch in practically no time at all, or even to just meditate with sound during a lunch break. The thing is freaking fantastic.
@aquaticborealis4877
@aquaticborealis4877 2 роки тому
Have you looked at the Deluge? The RC-505 does look like a lot of fun.
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 2 роки тому
@@aquaticborealis4877 Yeah, I almost got a Deluge. It's one of very few hardware devices which have a clips+scenes+arranger workflow. However, the pads aren't pressure-sensitive, it's designed to only have a few scenes per song, and it desperately needs a screen... so I went for a Force instead. Also, it's nice that the Force runs Linux so I can add my own programs and stuff to it. But I've been keeping an eye on the Deluge for several years because it has so much potential. It's good gear.
@jm6734
@jm6734 2 роки тому
Never owned a looper. Probably cause I’m more into making songs than doing short loops like you say. But with all that sample time what’s stopping you? I’m tempted by the immediacy and fun factor.
@ToyKeeper
@ToyKeeper 2 роки тому
@@jm6734 People can and do make complete songs with a RC-505. It's just difficult, because it's not really built for that. So doing it takes more skill and more planning than you would need with, say, Ableton. As for why it's more difficult, a big part is that there are only 5 loop slots. It's like having only one of what other devices would call a "scene" or "pattern", with 5 tracks. The mk2 upgrades that by allowing each loop slot to have 2 or 3 stacked layers, which should help a lot with song production, but it's still, at best, pretty limiting... and requires pretty clever planning to make it work. Another part of what makes it difficult compared to other devices is that it's entirely audio-based so you have to perform each part real-time. This raises the skill required to produce good results, since the user must be able to actually play. However, if you remove the goal of making complete songs, this type of looper becomes incredibly fun, easy, and intuitive. It's also a great way to practice and develop performance skills. Basically nothing else can be as quick or easy, since it all happens in real time. It's great at helping the user get into a state of flow, just zenning out and jamming. The only frustrating part is the low ceiling. Try to take a jam to the next level, and you'll probably bump your head on the device's limitations. A lot of workarounds are required to go beyond a one-pattern loop. So the usual way people do it is to set up a 4-chord loop and play or improvise the melody live on top of that loop, while maybe muting / unmuting tracks to provide a sense of movement. Or they'll build up a pattern, do a break, then delete most of it and start a new pattern, over and over. It's a good start, and a ton of fun, but it's not the right tool if you want to make songs which are bigger, more complex, and less improvised. Meanwhile, something like an Akai Force or Ableton Push can be almost as quick to use, and has a much much higher ceiling. So once I got tired of single-pattern loops, I upgraded to a Force. It has opened up a lot of room to grow. I'm now at the point where my quick sketches are usually like 5-10 patterns long and 6-8 tracks wide, and I'm barely scratching the surface of what I can do with it. But there's still nothing quite like zoning out with a looper and meditating for an hour with simple, sloppy, improvised songs. Instead of calling it a "Boss looper", they should call it a "Bliss looper".
@jm6734
@jm6734 2 роки тому
@@ToyKeeper Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. These are exactly the things I’m contemplating atm. On one side I’d like something hands-on to capture ideas (like many I just use my phone). This looper looks perfect for this and way more that could easily inspire songs/pieces along. But on the other hand I want something that I can actually produce actual tracks and easily export these as stems into Ableton, not just jam. So why not just use Ableton? It’s got it all really. Well, the thing is I find myself reluctant to switch on the computer when inspiration strikes. There’s definitely a threshold from composing on guitar/synth to open up the DAW. I believe many feel this way. So I’ve been scoping out for an immediate device like a good quality field recorder or sampler, but haven’t decided yet. I don’t want an Akai. But I think I’ll get the new Roland SP-404mk2. It looks nice and fast for any genre really. And I like that it’s effects are experimental. Don’t know about this BOSS looper since it’s Roland's guitar division.. I just need to make sure the software on the SP-404 is smooth for exporting stems. I’ve been thinking about these things for a while and I can’t believe why Ableton are so afraid to cannibalise their precious software. Can’t they see all the people NOT wanting computers on stage.. And all the musicians who simply want to sample/record without PCs. Why don’t they make a nice (mid-priced) portable, stand-alone device that integrates with the Live and holds a few effects. It’s must be executives that never were musicians and simply don’t get it. DAWs are not much fun to use for the initial stage of creation. That says a lot about why this desktop looper is so popular. At least I think so.

Its a huge problem with the mkI becaus when turning off the filter to switch to another effect, then the audience get huge a volumous shock when the volume goes crazy up from extreme low! So does the mkII FILTER FX have a volume more normal in libne with other effects? OR did they implement a FX volume setting within the filter fx? Thank You very much for your video! Could You please answer the question. In User Manual documentation in section Getting Ready on the page no 5 we can find: [FX] buttons. These buttons select whether to apply effects (input FX/track FX) for each track or not (effects are applied when the buttons are lit, and not applied when unlit). Also there is in section Creating a Loop Phrase (subsection Recording with Input FX) the next text: 1. Press the [FX] button for each track to turn its effects (input FX/track FX) on/off. It’s true, using [FX] buttons we can switch ON or OFF ‘track FX’ effects for tracks. But in my case [FX] buttons are not related with applying ‘input FX’ effects for the tracks. In both cases, when [FX] button is lit, or unlit, ‘input FX’ effect is applied for track. Is it really possible use [FX] buttons for switching ON or OFF ‘input FX’ effects for tracks? Thank You!

I have the RC-505 MK1, it does feel a bit toy like at times, in terms of the fx and the slightly grainy nature of the loop quality. I love that I can set loop lengths, time signatures, count in times, sync to MIDI etc. All great features that old school loopers were missing (hence making them hard to incorporate in a live band context). I am liking all these new features, especially the multiple ins outs and routing potential. It's just a lot of money to splurge on an upgrade. Is there an audio quantize feature of some sorts? It would be great if it could automatically quantize the timing of recorded clips like Ableton Live can, preferably with less than full strength like 75% strength, and to a swing pattern such as 1/16th 62% swing.

learn to quantize yourself, hardware won't do all the staff. Imperfectly quantized notes is what makes us humans hey
@yzimsx
@yzimsx 2 роки тому
@@IIeTpOc9H4uK It's a good tool, just like pitch correction. Ableton and others can audio-quantize, and quantization is completely expected from MIDI sequencers. Why not audio loopers.
@IIeTpOc9H4uK

@@yzimsx coz you gotta learn to play music in-time and in-pitch initially to keep your brain fit. The main principle of loopers for me is that they are fair. You got what you've played. It's not supposed to be easy no.

@@IIeTpOc9H4uK I'm 45 already, so I don't expect significant timing improvements. My timing with a looper is like this, and if that had been in Ableton, I would have audio-quantized the rhythm guitars and bass slightly to make it tighter ukposts.info/have/v-deo/gpGqfqpwiYKUo2g.html

There are a few high end loopers around at the moment. HeadRush Looperboard, RC 505, Electro Harmonix have one in this space too, but not too sure of model currently. I suspect others. Would be great to see a comparison - features, sound fidelity, user friendliness, etc. (Allowing for the complexity of these beasts, could be a worthwhile miniseries). PS. Welcome to the world of strange looping.

Its "ok" but us fans had really wanted to see - Many more tracks than still just 99 tracks. At least 999! - More channels than still just 5 channels. At least 8 or 10!

Wait hold up... So if you want to sum the tracks (bounce) you have to menu dive to turn it on, bounce the tracks, and then go back in a remember to turn it off before you do anything else? That doesn't really seem conducive to live performing. Am I missing something?

Is there anyway to 'cue' the individual tracks via headphones or something. Say you record some vocals, and it sounds out of key, and you don't want to send it to final output/mix?

The 4 way loop station has been responsible for the Livelooper youtube craze over the last 10 years only to be slowly replaced by Abalten live and pad machines like the Novation Rythem. I want to do live looping and definitely gona want this new one as Abulten dont work for Me, I cant get VSTs to work right.

You mentioned driving the MIDI clock from a drummer - I know of someone who does exactly this. They have a mic on the drummer's kick drum, which feeds the audio in of his MODX. The MODX tracks this and sets its tempo to that kick drum. The MIDI clock, derived from the MODX's tempo, then feeds everything else, including the RC-505. The original RC-505 did have some audio glitching problems when it was performing time stretching while slaved an external MIDI clock and attempting to derive its tempo from that clock. I'm curious to see if the MKII has fixed this problem.

@Aaron Foltz Yeah, I'm curious about this too. Does it mean the kick drum has to always play a 4/4 kick pattern in order to set the tempo?
@ScottsSynthStuff

It does depend on a 4/4 rhythm. This is a Yamaha video that shows it in use: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/gYKdm52jqqBoymQ.html

Considering the price of this thing, i think its *much* better to get a Maschine MK3. Then you are not limited to recording just 5 loops, and you can customize its functionality with your favorite plugin (or hardware) effects and instruments. This combined with the nice user interface and workflow makes me think this is better (for my personal needs) than probably ANY other music production tool that i am aware of. I got this just a couple of days ago; and for the first time in my life, i actually feel CONTENT with the gear i have..! This is not to say that i will never buy another hardware synth, but right now, i actually feel peace in my heart. Sweet relief :P

I had been pondering over the mk1 for a while, so when news of the Mk2 came along I pre-ordered and paid my money. Sadly, that was in November, was told it would be December delivery, then Jan, then feb, now it’s the end of March. I wish that manufacturers would have the products in store and ready to ship when they tease you, I know there have been a lot of times that I would have made an impulse purchase on the back of a UKposts demo, but then the item has been a pre order so I’ve not bothered about it, and then subsequent videos convinced me that I didn’t really need it. I’m at the point where Boss/Roland are about to lose a sale.

Hello anyone with one of these! So I am trying to get the mk2 set up as my master for start/stop and clock. Which I have managed to do so far. I am now unsure how to route my audio?? So I have the looper set as master, with my TR-8S 2nd then onto my microkorg (ATM). I do plan to swap this out with some other bits of kit as I see fit in the future. My mains audio comes out into my Mackie mixer , with 6 of my 11 channels going to their own channel on the mixer, then the rest goes into one channel from the mains out. I had then run the audio from the ctl room outs on the mixer into the looper, I lost nearly all sound from the TR at this point. I then cranked up 🤷🏼‍♂️ I'm not even sure tbh but the looper track DBs and got into the EQ side of it and cranked up all of those too. Got everything sounding ok then dropped my kick, and bass channels out of the drum machine, everything else raised so high in volume as if it was being compressed? 🤷🏼‍♂️ I don't know. I clearly haven't set it up right, and I'm currently running the TR into the Mackie then from there out and into my interface (which I do have the looper going to also. Has anybody else run into this kinda thing and how did you go about correcting it? Should I run everything out the mixer into the looper? Or should I assign one of the outs on the TR into the looper? Can anyone please advise me on this? Thanks and sorry for such a long comment. FfanitTech

Can you only have two synths to inputs? It would be great to be able to have access to all 5 tracks with 5 synths but seems like only two are possible.

You can make each input mono and have four I guess, but you cant record to more than one track at a time anyhow

Roland have been promoting there 50 year anniversary, with special instructional videos etc. Unfotunately they also added 50 dollars to the price of most of their gear including the rc 505mk 2, making the cost 649 dollars, an additional dollar for each year in business. Way to go Roland.

My question is: should I get this or an ableton looper for a dance music live set?
@johnthebigtree
@johnthebigtree 2 роки тому
Ableton will give you endless possibilities The 505 will be limiting in comparison, but possibly more fun Since you're doing dance music, I'd probably suggest ableton, as long as the midi controller is fun to use. You want to feel the music and have fun while you perform. For me, the 505 mk1 is the most fun I've ever had with a piece of gear. Good luck
