@Vicki Toriana - There is a serious lack of judicial oversight and scrutiny where these utility warrants are concerned, Vicki. The number of courts which issue them have been reduced to a handful. This is deliberate and has nothing to do with streamlining justice or cost-cutting. It is denying access to justice, which goes against ECHR/HRA. When I have accompanied people to courts where the utility companies apply for these warrants, the utility company employee who drew the short straw goes red in the face and visibly shakes. This is not anger. This is an outward sign of extreme stress because they KNOW what they are doing is wrong and fear being given a hard time, verbally, or being bounced off the walls of the court or worse. Invariably, they will remove the warrant from the bundle they have with them and hand it to the customer to avoid an ear-bashing or a smack in the head. Although I have some sympathy for these unfortunate employees, as I tell them, they are only required to carry out a lawful instruction and have the right to refuse to carry out any instruction which they know or suspect is unlawful or illegal. I do wish utility company employees would grow a backbone and a pair of balls and stand up to bully-boy employers.

And during the whole proces the thought of "I should stop being a thief and simply pay my debts" never occured to you? You thought it was easier to cause a scene, abuse your parents' positions and cause so much grief, instead of just paying what's owed?

Its a lie, they are a third party company, their so called warrants are fraudulent.

From what I've seen, it doesn't even have to be a magistrate that signs off a warrant. Any senior court official can do it, and it doesn't even need to be signed. A rubber stamp is all that's required. Given that they probably get dozens of warrant applications a day, it does make you wonder how thoroughly they scrutinise each one.

There are plenty of people who do not pay for gas or electric and very little happens to them because they understand what is legal and what isn't.

@@katoness Apparently, a digital copy of a warrant on a phone or tablet is all that is required to be shown in order to execute the warrant immediately. The original wet signed paper document must be made available for inspection if requested, and any doubts you have about it's authenticity challenged later, but will not hold off the immediate execution of the warrant while having to wait for it, and it will almost certainly get 'delayed' for long enough to allow the work to be completed. I guess it's so the initial element of surprise is not lost before being them being able to complete the search or install any new equipment.

Additionally they use them because they are direct debit only accounts, which they can then overcharge and keep the money on their books until you ask for it back. This is essentially a cheap loan because they don't have to pay you interest, so if the company has 1 million customers and they overcharge everyone £100 per year then they get an interest free loan of £100,000,000 which they can use for...well anything really, as few actually ask for the money back.

Thats not what a smart meter is for. A smart meter is for the energy firms to read your meter every month so you can get the most accurate bill. So yoj are not having to call up to provide the reading yourself monthly.

Part of that complaint was receiving letters from Arvato. Arvato called at my house last week wanting to discuss the 'alleged' debt. I politely said I wasn't interested, closed the door and off he toddled. That's all I said "I'm not interested". I'm not engaging with them and getting drawn in.

Why, when prices have only doubled and presumably you've if anything been taking steps to reduce use, has your costs more than quadrupled then? Do you even agree with the utility what you have and haven't used? Do you understand your bills, do you know what a Kwh of gas and electric is and what they look like in use? Have you sat there and worked out what different appliances use when switched on or on standby, so you know which should be switched off at wall? Have you looked at balancing your heating system well and turning your flow temperature right down? What base line temperature are you heating the place too? It's important to be conscious of what Kwh you are using and how, you should know why your costs have quadrupled or if they're just charging as much as they can get away with "estimating." It's important to get some kind of in home monitor also, you can get ones that work with old style non smart meters that give decent moment to moment estimate. The cost shouldn't "quadruple" if you arrange to spread it out over the year, it should be well under *less than just double* if your using less and its an overall milder winter than a lot of years... Of course mis managing a heating system during cold snaps can result in a lot of wasted heat, its important to get that flow temperature on the system down and dress up in some thermals ect. It takes longer for temperature to rise but you then feel warmer at a more stable temperature for longer due to more energy being retained in a radiant hear form in the walls ect I believe. (radiant heat not to be confused with what we call the radiators which are really in fact "convectiors")

@Donkey Puncher what makes you think the courts have done anything wrong? British Gas needs to be held to account for falsely gaining a warrant under a pretense of health and safety, when all they want is to fit prepay meters. Any other person doing this would be charged with contempt of court.

@Detag guy - Absolutely. The problem lies with lax regulation, rubber-stamping clowns at courts signing-off the warrants and not demanding proof before signing-off warrants. The fact smart meters are fitted with 4G SIM cards and emit an electro-magnetic field (EMF) makes them unsafe for those with conditions which cause people to be EMF-sensitive to be installed. I had this issue with my energy provider when they tried to foist one on me. I gave them a simple choice - fit it against my will and make me ill and I sue the butts off you or fit it, make me ill and let me use as much gas and electricity as I want without charge. They decided it wouldn't be a good idea to fit a smart meter in my home.
