Brooks Koepka is the best! Listen to his PERFECT take on slow play and golfers with psychologists... HILARIOUS! 🀣 "Even if I take over 40 seconds, penalize me, I’ll be the guinea pig, it doesn’t matter. It needs to happen."

He's bang on. There is so much said about rule changes supposedly having been made to speed up play, when the truth is that these make little or no difference when the field can only go as quick as the slowest players (unless groups are let through, but this seldom if ever happens). IMHO 3 minutes search v 5 minutes just means the group behind doesn't get let through and has to wait; the ability to leave the flag in doesn't speed things up if somebody wants it attending (which they can still request) or if someone wants it out and then someone else wants it back in; and ready golf (except on the tee) just seems to end up with people getting in each other's way. The fact is that slow play is 100% caused by slow players who either walk slowly; and/or have laborious routines; excessive practice swings; are not ready/wait until it is on them before measuring yardage, putting glove on and selecting their club, and looking at putts from all angles (all things that can be done whilst waiting for others to play). I see 20 handicappers at my club who are just playing in the weekly medal piss about for minutes on every shot (often followed by a complete duff). It is a major issue that needs addressing in the pro game and even more so in the amateur game where we are not playing for millions of dollars and take more (sometimes a lot more) shots. Brooks is spot on that there should be a rule applying a time limit for each shot (whether it is 40 seconds or a minute I am not too fussed) that is rigorously enforced in exactly the same way as all the other rules.

In my isolated case I found a solution. I am a fast player and a man that works outdoors, as do two other men in my group. The fourth in my group that was taking forever drove us nuts. He had an indoor job with air conditioning. We finally got so tired of his slow play that we held him on the greens forever. We were all used to the heat, he wasn't. There is no shade on a green to speak of. We held him there for an eternity taking forever to line up putts just to piss him off and make him sweat. He finally got wise to what we were doing and stopped playing with us. He's still a good friend, but for the first time in over ten years we can finish a round in just over 3 hours. It used to take 5-6 because we had to let people constantly play through. I always felt so guilty about the people behind us when I played with him. Now that he is off the course at least 100 people can get home earlier, cook dinner, eat, use the bathroom, shower, and get to bed earlier on any given Sunday afternoon. I actually timed him. His average was over 3 minutes per shot if he was in good standing. If he was in the trees it could easily be 10 minutes. Conversely I am 21 seconds from the time I put my tee in the ground and less than 15 seconds on my fairway shots. I hate slow play. Three of us would tee off in about 1 minute and we would have to sit and wait for him to get all his calculations correct, make an error on one of his 3000 practice swings, and start the whole process over again without any regard for us or who was behind us. He is a very smart man, he's just incredibly ignorant.

I feel his pain. Too bad at municipal courses I’m waiting over 5 minutes for a guy to hit off the tee into woods. Another 5 for him to look for it. Another 5 for him to choose his drop spot and hit. Another 5 for him to hit three off the rough. And another 5 minutes to putt, just to pick it up one foot from the hole because he missed. Some people just don’t understand what pace of play is. As you are walking or riding to your ball, you have time to think about the shot you want to hit. Once you get there, you get a yardage. If the wind is highly variable, you have to give it a thought and add or subtract. That gives you a club. You go through your pre-shot routine and hit it. Most shots we should know what kind of shot we are going to play prior to arriving at the ball. Then it is about distance and a bit of correction for the circumstances. That is about 30 seconds tops from the time you arrive at the ball to when you should hit most shots. It should be less if you arrive and it is someone else's turn. You should be ready to hit when it is your turn. That is about 10 seconds. Read your putt while others are reading theirs. When it is your turn. Get to it. What I see a lot of is people not even starting to select a club before someone else plays. They may not even have figured out the distance let alone the corrections. This is not difficult. You have to focus on playing golf. What I find is that most people don't seem to be able to focus very well.

nice explanation about the ADHD most amateur competition is suffering and yes some Pro sports tooobviously.Playing billard or snooker for example. The best are fast player focused on whats going on and it dont take them long to adjust and conquer.Thats what make them great. The Snails are dragging their way through competition by not taking any risk and forcing/waiting errors on opponent. They get to the table on their turn as if their focus start there taking minutes to play a single shot. Then they sit and talk to someone or look at their stupid phones or golfers chatting with caddies looking for reconfort.... get rid of all the snails from every sports and sports need to be fast paced to get spectators or sponsors.Shorter formulas of competitions would help.

How refreshing. Just a normal guy who wants to play golf. Phycologist telling you "have to be ready to take the shot" I just normally walk up to the ball figure the distance then choose a club then swing. I don't need to pay Β£500 a hour to someone to figure that out.

It wasn't funny at all. But if you're a golf watcher it takes the piss out of slow play. Which most of us find hilarious. Imagine taking 2 minutes to take a shot every single shot in pool. Not only is it a giant inconvenience but it's also a completely pathetic approach to playing any kind of sport. I would equate this to someone taking 2 minutes deciding which penalty he wants in NFL, or 2 minutes to convert, or 2 minutes to discuss your challenge to the referees. This is essentially why golf has never evolved as a fan sport. Noone wants to sit there watching some dude hold his cock for 2 minutes before deciding to hit the ball. Considering they walk most of the time, that shit is not needed and not appreciated.

I was a Koepka fan way before most people ever heard of him because I actually follow what's going on in the pro golf world. Somehow I missed the hilarity in this video, however. I also missed any possible good that could have come from BK touring the golf course butt-naked. In fact, I am rethinking my whole attitude about him since his decision to do that -- and his in ability to close the deal on the FedEX cup race. It was his! All he had to do was hit the fairway at about 65% clip -- and he couldn't do it! It's not exactly like McIlRoy was shattering the course records.

I was playing competive golf in the '80s when the disease of slow play hit with abandon. Before that it didn't occur to amatuers to step off every shot, consult yardage books, make notes, throw grass, double-check, clean grooves/spikes, all before even beginning the all-important "pre-shot routine." Rounds on 6500 yard courses went from 3 hours to 5 1/2. And don't even get me started on those god-forsaken phones on the 8th and 17th holes to make sure every yuppie on the course orders a $14 sandwich and $5 beer to enjoy at the turn and of course the 19th hole. If the 1st tee wasn't stacked to hell and back, you could bet the 10th would be, as every 22 handicap lived life large scarfing down overpriced food without giving a flying F about the 25 foursomes behind them. I started shooting pool and guns.

So totally right! Actually the player who started that trend was Nicklaus. Ok, if you're Nicklaus I can see taking forever to size up, set up and hit a shot. He was solving the pressure cooker of modern majors. But, weekend golfers on public courses starting doing what he did. Hey, if Jack does it and he's the best ever, then my game will be better if I do it. Somehow, that became the norm. Then, the Ben Cranes and now the Patrick Cantlays do it on the pro tour. Over to you Jim while Patrick takes until the next decade to hit his shot and putts.

I think time pressure would probably make the sport more enjoyable. Ever since Tiger left I found it’s like someone let the air out of the balloon, he was someone that made people watch cause his shots were daring and usually on target. Obviously you can’t expect a new β€œTiger” to show up so why not put more pressure and margin for error to increase the drama of trying to keep your lead with less time to plan every shot.
