This was epic. 18 months on our own, non professionals restoring an abandoned house. For under 40k. Really was a ruin but here in the Algarve it’s satisfying to know we gave an old traditional rural village house a new lease of life. Thanks for all your support along the way. Look out for the next video - The courtyard.

I just bought a 450 year old medieval stone house in southern Italy and spent two years renovating it. I had a top-notch crew: architect, builder, plumber, electrician, stone mason, cabinet maker, iron monger (for balcony railings and exterior security gates), but you two are all that poured into just two people!! Great job!

As a swedish carpenter i am impressed with that woodwork; the almost over engineered stud work (is that correct, the wood skeleton so to speak). Im so used to cry a little when watching americans and others building with bad thin lumber and sub par building codes. But this was strong, sturdy and exact to the fraction of an inch. It warms my old woodworkers heart!

@@davidwbybee3450 There is too much to list and i dont have insight in everything. But as a european i can mention the lack of residual current device, something that has been standard here for ages. Outer walls without vapor barrier. Substandard codes for water barrier in bathrooms. Use of different sub standard fiber boards like masonite. Lack of proper insulated 2 or 3 sheet glas windows. Bad sub standard house foundation. In sweden most foundations are rebar concrete poured on a exact dug out pit with gravel and thick styrofoam. In the u.s, even in cold states with proper winter, i see just a patch of untreated dirt, some cinderblocks on that and basic exposed wood studs layed on the cinder blocks. Again there is so much and im not a native english speaker so i cant expalain it all very well.

As an architect myself, I absolutely agree. The exact same thought came to mind when I saw them knocking the arch down and ripping out the floor and filling it over. I guess the underground plumbing put paid to any chance of saving the floor, not sure the floor tiles would have come off in whole pieces. The roof tiles could have been used too, they spent so much time doing the job, a little more would not have hurt. He mentioned a deadline and he did away with the local help, so I guess that left him with a very tight schedule, he probably opted for quick fixes as a result.

Yep, here in Portugal there are many abandoned houses which used to be a penny before investors started coming here.. You were able to buy them for around 2,2 to 5 thousands euros if they were in that state. However, it needs extra money to make improvements in the houses.. There is a good side of this that investors coming here do make the prices per m2 increase but, also, normally they rebuild and rent the properties and with so many people coming to Portugal nowadays, we do need more rentable houses.. So, great job, guys!

@islamisthetruewaytogod6812 4 місяці тому
Hello ! May Allah protect and guide you to his light and happiness in this life and the hereafter, God bless, Ameen. Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Thank you very much for your time. Islam is an arabic word that means the Surrender to the One and Only God, our Creator, Protector, Provider, who gives us life and all that we have, we are safe and sound by his will and grace, we are His and to Him we return, and we have to thank him in this trial life by submitting to him by our free will, or later in the Day of judgment when it's too late to save our own skin. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).. God said : Say, “We believe in Allah, and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs, and in what was given to Moses and Jesus, and in what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We do not differentiate between any of them. And to Him, we surrender.” (2:136 / Translated by Community) Salam (Peace) -----------------------------------

@@LisaRL70I’m not sure in comparison to America, but it depends on what your career is. Minimum wage is significantly lower in Portugal than it is in the UK, although groceries and rent is cheaper. If you don’t work a minimum wage job you would be okay, but probably still learn less. I guess it evens out with everything else being cheaper. We learn English from primary school and most have a basic level of English if not fluent, and I think most of us don’t mind Americans at all. We’re pretty welcoming where I’m from. 😊

Having to learn everything at a later age it really had to be something you enjoy. That helps you learn quicker and can’t beat just doing it and changing if a mistake was made. Coming from a design background really helped visualise it and we went round in circles going through all the options fairly early on and sticking to it but still being flexible. Ridiculously tight budget also helps keep you on track.

All my previous house were in similar condition, they were all I could afford. These buildings are a simple construction once you can see passed the mess and I think the key is to put down on paper how you want it to look, then don’t give up. We also got advice on materials etc by pros to make sure we were doing it right. You all are not young any more, but you did us old(er) geezers proud. I am not sure how many of us could have lasted one day on that job let alone so many months. Up and down ladders, moving scaffolding, balancing on top of walls, awkward trowel work, forming and lifting re-bar, swinging the sledge hammers, moving rubble (where did it go?), etc, etc, etc. Just a marvelous endeavor. I think in a way, while this is a compliment, it comes off a bit backhanded to Portugese people and their homes if you're implying that a English man coming in and adding English flair to a Portugese house "raising the value", like as though the houses around aren't as good without the English aspects. I could just be reading in too far to it though. But I will say that he did try his best to fit it to the original design, minus the lack of tiles, and he did fucking great and worked hard as hell. It looks amazing, though I do feel kind of sad seeing some of the stuff from the original being covered up cus they added alot of character.

I am blown away! Happened by chance to see this video when putting on shows for my children. 2mins in, I was invested in the video! The detail of the work is incredible and an absolute pleasure to watch! You guys are artists!

I watched the whole thing in one sitting …and it was captivating! Well done breathing a whole new life into an old ruin. Like you said, that’ll be good for decades!

Oh my gosh...I never comment on these videos, but I just have to say that this is an incredible transformation! There are so many times in the video where I thought..."never mind..." but then you just kept on going with masterful workmanship. Congratulations on coming out on the other side. Simply splendid work. I will follow you anywhere...P.S. the fact that you didn't spend all the time with voiceover work was a really good choice. You told me what I needed to know and stayed quiet, and I appreciate it!

Im just thrilled at the sheer dedication to detail and care. Considering this was a renovation to sell, you all put so much love and passion into this from start to finish and didn't cut a single corner just to "get the job done". Very lovely to see. True artisans, well done.

My one question is, "Who in that area is going to be able to afford to buy such a modern house?"

This was a facinating watch from start to finish. It was amazing to see what you achieved. For starters just having the vision to see the end result before you even started to turn that ruin into a beautifully renovated rebuilt house was incredible. I love what you have dine Well done chaps!!.
