Hi, I’m a woman in her 20s and I’m training to become a U.S. Navy SEAL. What advice would you give for women that want to be SEALs? If you had to go to BUD/S again, how would you prepare differently? What books or workout programs would you recommend? Most female SEAL candidates struggle with carrying the boats and logs, doing pull ups, having grip strength and completing the “Dirty Name” on the obstacle course. Also, a lot of female SEAL candidates break their legs or develop stress fractures. A woman made it to day 4 of BUD/S first phase recently but she quit on that day. That’s the farthest a woman has made it. Her BUD/S classmates told me that her class hated her and ran her out from under the boat because she was a boat ducker. Nine women have entered the SEAL pipeline since 2016.

Lively definitely soaks up the spotlight for the way he just lets it all roll off him, but I find that Rivera is the one with the most impressive journey from beginning to end. He came back to see if the third time was the charm, and through all the ups and downs, he just kept rolling along, constantly pushing the rest of the class to stay in it at the same time. He really deserved to be singled out as the class's best student at the end.

@@jasminejoy_373I wasn't a Seal but a Marine. My advice is to not be a seal as a woman. You'll be marginalized and criticized about everything. Your classmates and instructors will treat you like a joke or a burden. That was the case for female Marines, but I'm sure it's to a greater degree for SEALs. No woman has ever made it farther than a week into BUDs. Unless you're an Olympic caliber swimmer and runner, it's probably not worth the trouble, stress, and injuries

I worked with a guy who was a long retired SEAL. He seemed very gruff, to the point, but a good guy and tough as nails. Also, he said sometimes he would have flashbacks that made him uncomfortable (probably him downplaying PTSD), and usually the fix was running his hands under warm water. He hated cold water with a passion. He was the only one not required to do the swim check in the 50 degree glacial runoff lake. Not only has he had his lifetime fill of frigid water, we all were wholly confident he could swim just fine 😂

I joined the marine corps for the pride and difficulty. I thought i was hot shit when i got to MOS school and had all Navy classmates. Until i met someone in class that was a BUDs drop because he broke his leg. He made it through hell week and got hurt shortly after. He came to Marine PT with us in the morning of his own free will, and we ran to the point of half the platoon having shin splints. We ran 6-8 miles 5 days a week, usually in cammies and boots and carrying dummies or logs as a squad. He ran fucking circles around us. I was 18 years old and in incredible shape, my 3 mile time was around 18 minutes and some change. He could outrun, outlift, outspeed me in every conceivable way. Absolute monster

These men choose to be put under the pressure ( and even abuse at times) to become able to sustain such and be strong to serve our country. Thank you to each of them for trying regardless of if graduated as their efforts helped them grow and I am sure they learned and brought what they learned to their next endeavours.

FYI: Jeff Boss was medically rolled out in first phase of class 234. He started again with class 236 first phase and successfully went on to graduate. Thus, Jeff Boss did eventually become a NAVY SEAL and graduated BUD/s 236 class. Walker, however, is a different story. He had tried BUD/s training 2X and was medically rolled due to an arm fracture. His second time he DOR after having pneumonia during Wednesday morning of Hell Week. Then, his third and final attempt was with class 234 of which he only made it to Tuesday evening. We see him unexpectedly DOR telling Lively that he “simply doesn’t want it anymore”. He then DOR and quit during 234 Hell Week. That wasn’t the end for Walker though! He later became a Navy Diver about a year later. After accomplishing this, he went back to good old Coronado, CA for unfinished business. Due to his love for the sea, and dreams of being in the special forces, he enrolled into SWCC training (Special Warfare Combatant Crew) aka “The Boat Teams”. SWCC selection is a condensed fast pace version of BUD/s with an emphasis on nautilus warfare. Originally, SWCC candidates would go through basic underwater, demolition training, just like the seals, after graduating buds, the Graduate with then choose their scope of special warfare (SEAL TEAMs or BOAT TEAMS). I’m not sure at one point, but the Navy decided to make SWCC completely separate from BUDS selection process. Although SWCC training is only 10 weeks total (compared to BUD/s 26 weeks) but have its own version of Hell Week called “The Tour”. However, it’s a 72 Hour with no food or sleep along calisthenics/evolutions. It’s a condensed version of Hell Week.

They're Chiefs and Senior Chiefs, most definitely NOT his 'juniors'. Attaining the rank of CPO in the Navy can take upwards of a decade for an EXCEPTIONAL sailor. As a Lieutenant, that SEAL was still a Junior Officer, not yet a Field Grade Officer. He's been in the Navy for maybe half the time that those men have. Rivera has been in longer than that LT, most likely. NCOs advising Officers is how the military works.
