Today Luke is reviewing the Swedish Army Mess Kit with Trangia Stove and he is going to tell you how to purchase it for a much lower price than what you will find it for in the USA.
By the way, it's AWESOME!

Link : www.varusteleka.com/en/produc...
Price : $22.99
Weight :
What is Included:
· Swedish Issue Trangia Burner - Free from any defects
· Swedish SPRIT 35 Bottle for fueling your Trangia Burner
· Swedish Army Trangia Burner Windscreen
· Reproduction Swedish Mess Kit

Why this is an excellent buy :
These cook sets are absolutely awesome because they are so versatile. You can run the alcohol stove or you can use this as a wood burning system. Here in the US, these cooksets are expensive and are typically found on ebay for well over $100. Even outside of the US, these are commonly sold for over $30 but with $25 shipping charges.
A combination of an aluminium mess tin and an alcohol stove. Perhaps not a state of the art plasma-cooker from outer space, but virtually indestructible, affordable and very effective. The mess tin is new production, made by Mil-Tec, rest is Swedish army surplus.
The small accessories pack into the mess tin and the holder slides over it. The cooking process is very simple and the system is quick to set up:
Take the mess tin out of the holder
Inside the holder there are two metal wire thingies. Open these so that when you put the mess tin back into the holder, the tin won't go all the way down. Don't put the tin in just yet.
Take the burner cup out of the mess tin, unscrew the cap, pour in some fuel, place it on the bottom of the holder (under the wire thingies) and light it by holding a burning match over it.
Put whatever you want to cook into the mess tin and slide it into the holder over the burner cup. The wire thingies should hold the mess tin over the burner.
If the instructions seem hard to understand, don't worry - when you get the product, you'll be able to figure all this by yourself. If not, you should not have been allowed to play with fire to begin with.
Further instructions:
This is an alcohol cooker. Few countries sell pure alcohol for normal people, but there are lots of denaturated sorts made exactly for this use. We recommend either Marinol or Sinol. Marinol has a more neutral odor, but Sinol is available from us.
NO FUEL IS INCLUDED - the small, EMPTY plastic bottle is for your convenience as normally fuel is sold in unwieldly big containers. It's up to you to fill it.
The burner cup and fuel bottle are meant to be transported inside the mess tin. It's a good idea to put them into a small resealable plastic bag before putting them into the tin, as denaturated alcohol will make your food taste real bad, and it's a nuisance to get it off.
Always use the lid when cooking things. Makes stuff cook much faster and keeps you from looking like a dolt.
The wire handle has a small notch on the top to facilitate hanging the mess kit over a campfire, for example.
1. Fill your Trangia burner with alcohol from the alcohol flask that comes with this set. For best results we recommend using denatured alcohol.
2. Adjust the metal support posts in the windscreen to support your mess kit.
3. Light your Trangia burner.
4. Place windscreen over your Trangia burner.
5. Mix your meal in your mess kit, and slide it into the windscreen.
6. Prepare to enjoy your hot freshly cooked camp meal.
7. Make sure your Trangia burner is cool before putting cap on to protect the rubber o-ring.
The windscreen has the three crowns which means that this is legit Swedish military
….
In a pinch you can use these stoves with a wood fire but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you absolutely have to. High heat remove the finish

Was researching this stove and found one never used in a thrift shop for $3.99. I about fell over . Just tried the stove today. Works like a charm. All original with three crown stamp. Dated nc68. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Two hardware items missing 1) the pot with the bail arm should have a metal pot hanger which also stabilises the pot for pouring by fixing to the offset notch on the bail; 2) should be two D rings on the smaller pot arm which one can use with a stick threaded through to hold over a fire. I have two of these pieces of kit for Kayak/Canoe trips. As has been said some come with a leather strap and plastic Kuksa cup as well.

I used it for many years in The Homeguard and Airforce. We cooked food in them,washed clotes, we dig foxholes, rebuild them to claymore mines etc. When the end of the world is here, only theese pots will survive :) PS. I still use mine, I have stainless and aluminum. If you see one, buy it !

@@dirtyronald I have one of these. did you also notice that the Mil-tec pots have the bail fitted the wrong way around, the extra notch for the hook should be the opposite way around. My windshield has no markings at all, maybe also a reproduction? Have two stainless versions also, but they are genuine.

Some might be good reviews, but he does not have a clue about putting tents up correctly, see his F1 French army tent and Dutch army tent. The French one is so loose, it’s like a flag flapping in the wind, no wonder it didn’t keep the rain out. Same with the Dutch one, plus the Dutch is designed so one particular side is head on to the prevailing wind and rain, his, most certainly was not, hence, a lot of the problems with water ingress. Take a lot of his advice with a pinch of salt and check other reviews for a balanced point of view. By the way, his “example of an original burner in good condition” isn’t the correct burner, it’s the smaller commercial version that has the simmer ring shown in the picture. The correct original burner is bigger, has a larger capacity and doesn’t come with a simmer ring, although a Tatonka one will fit. Luke, do your research, please!

I used this kit in the swedish army infantry 1980-1981 + 1985. There should be 2 rings on the lid handle so that you can put a stick handle on it. There should also be a rather large hook on the handle of the big pot so that you can more easily hang it over an open fire.

Great piece of gear, I’ve had one for 30 years I paid $5.83 for it and free shipping. There’s a modification you can do to turn the fry pot around so the handle does not get super hot on top of the open flame. You should try it, it works… As always, a great review…

Good video. I managed to find such a steel set at a second hand market for 7 euros. It does not have a wind shield, but you can buy it separately. The steel versions are probably from the 40s, and as far as I know, they didn't originally have a wind shield and a burner. The windshield and the burner only came later after the war and then the material changed back to aluminum. Steel versions were made only in the 1940's.

Nice review, Luke. They are really a great setup. Have had mine for about 12 years now and I love it. Mine is the steel version and I paid about $35 for it back then. The aluminum one you reviewed is nice but is lacking a couple of features. Some people before have already mentioned a couple of them and I won't delve into them again. My set is dated 5/67 and is in solid condition. I hope your set serves you well and lasts at least your lifetime!

I love my Trangia Series-27 kit ( it's the 2x 1-litre pot/frypan one...I also got the kettle even tho it's not necessary-- but it's just so cute!). It's perfect solo or with a friend. And not too expensive. Perfectly integrated and the Trangia alcohol stoves are insanely bulletproof and pretty light! Trangia makes some great stuff.

TheOutdoorGearReview Thanks Luke! Really appreciate the reply and the time you take to make us aware of these great deals on Military Surplus gear items. Like you, I am also a big fan of history and military history. Gear like this is not only very useful for camping but also helps us to better understand how our troops and their Allies managed to endure during times like WW II and the Cold War. Looking at that Swiss Army blanket you recommended for my next gear addition too. Just a side note, it occurred to me that adding a US GI canteen cup and cover to this kit would make it similar to the German Army mess kit and really round it out well. Just wanted share that with you as a means of saying "Thank You". All the best to you and the family. Looking forward to your next videos!

Years ago I bought 10 of them in a set special for $50 with free shipping and they were all unissued and burners were all in mint condition with no leaks. The shroud is designed to burn small wood branches as backup and the finish is anodized aluminum. The stainless pot version is too heavy for backpack carry but should be fine if stored in an auto also stainless tends to burn foods more easily. I would add a pot lifter, stainless utensil set, stainless cup, and fire steel with lighter to complete set keeping weight at around 3 1/4 lb.

They are cool. I picked one up a couple of years ago, the price wasn't to bad and my stove works although it is the big model. The smaller Trangia or a knockoff will save some weight. And you are correct they have gotten stupidly expensive. Thanks for the tip on a good source, I'll have to see what other goodies they have :-)

I was able to get an all genuine stainless steel one for £16.38($23.20 according to Siri at the time of writing this) from one of my local army stores in the North East of England and it was fully complete apart from the fact it didn’t come with the green mug which I picked up for £3.50. And I love the set, I am constantly using it when I go camping as it’s such a rugged piece of kit. If you’re buying a genuine one of these in person the main thing to check is the burner as these on occasion can have hairline cracks in them. The main gripe of it is the weight of it I haven’t measured it but I would estimate the weight to be around 1.5 kg for the full set without fuel

It's a bomb proof kit IMO, I have the stainless steel version. Built like a tank, rugged and reliable, I've used mine for years. My other favorite is the German mess kit. I use the Swiss for the car kit and the German mess kit in my ruck, backed up with a Pocket Rocket and Esbit collapsible heating unit.
@kalastajanvoima2
@kalastajanvoima2 6 років тому
I have gone to a system like that. I have ti wood gas thingy. I use it as a stand for those esbit tablets. It can even fit an alcohol burner. Tablets are kinda smelly and smokey. But they work as fire starter as well if I really need to get something going. Good for coffee and the like as well. Some good diy here. This setup is the best ever. Some germans I have seen to be having shims and abuse their esbit as a wood burner. My gut feeling is performance wise those gas cans are the most efficient and simple. It can perhaps do the heavy lifting best. But there is complexity and those canisters.

Yeah, same! It's a beast. My mother was lucky enough to find it at a nearby second-hand store and got it for about 5 bucks or so. The pot and the frying pan, both in great condition. I completed the set by purchasing a brand new windscreen, burner, fuel bottle and the original cutlery set. (And everything is stamped with the crown too, so it's 100% genuine!) I will hold on to all this, I know how difficult the set is to find these days. So this was a great find!

Interestingly, the design of these goes back a lot further than WW2. These are, as far as I can tell, the third generation (1940s or 50s). But they are only a slight modification of an older design in stainless steel (1910s) and those are in turn based on a copper/brass type from around 1840. The main differences in the third generation are size, material, and the inclusion of the windscreen and alcohol burner. But the fundamental design has remained mostly unchanged since the mid 19th century. Prior to this, meals would be prepared at a squad level much as they were by the Romans (Contubernium). Nowadays, though, the Swedish armed forces are issued stoves much more like what you might find in a modern hiker's kit. Depending on unit type, this could be something like the Optimus Crux all the way to the Trangia Jägarkök (Hunter Kitchen).
@jonn3132
@jonn3132 2 роки тому
Trangia's "Jägarkök" or as hunters kitchen as you said were in use at the same time as these I believe. They were issued to rangers (Jägare) as they would be out far longer than the regular grunt and would need better options of cooking and preparing food.

if you dont like aluminium or dont wont to get ripped of for the steel version: get the stove without the original aluminium or steel pot. buy a stainless steel pot of the us army. it is smaller than the swedish but you can built a holding system with 2 metal sticks. attach/wrap the sticks onto the holding system from the stove. use this set up for 3 years now. works perfect.

There's a leather strap that connects the kit so it stays together that seems to be missing from yours, but it's very rare to find one. Also they should come with 2 bottles. I ordered one and like Luke's mine did not have the D-rings on the handle nor the hook on the handle. It was easy to fashion the missing D-rings and a hook for the handle. I used heavy wire for the D-rings and an old coat hanger hook for the handle. Works fine for the handle extension and the hanger. Luckily my alcohol stove was an original and in real good condition. o Overall I'm happy with the kit.

Never store the spirit bottle inside the mess kit! At least the original bottle will often leak a small amount of fuel - that kind of alcohol will usually make the food taste horrible! It's a classic mistake among conscripts here in Sweden! :)

As a "MIN" (Military Interested Nerd) I must point out to you that the design is not from ww2 but actually from the 1880:s. In those days the can came without the burner and you made a "firetrench" and hung your can over it. From 1880 to 1910 they were made out of copper.

Good point from the 3 crowns. My windshield didn't came with that so maybe it is a reproduction too ? I'm using this one for boiling the water for drip filter coffee and instant noodles. The windshield makes that the flames go unnoticed by bystanders. This is a bit more convenience when sitting on a bench in a public park or so. The plastic alcohol bottle did came with the 3 crowns so that is hopefully original. I bought a small bottle with alcohol (110 ml) for medical purposes in the pharmacy. This one I fill up and store in the kettle itself before going on a day trip. Usually this is enough to make some coffee and instant noodles. Most coffee mugs and hard plastic cutlery can be stored in the kettle also.

The 3 crowns marking were the marking that it belonged to the Swedish Armed Forces. However there were also civilian defence organisations that used these kits so the one you have might very well be original, just wasn't used in/intended to be used in the military.

I have an actual Swedish kit... the Varusteleka kit, is a repro... the burner that usually comes with it, doesn't come with a simmer ring. But, Tatonka makes a simmer ring that fits the Trangia military burner.

You clearly have'd used it jet. ;-) The inside becomes dirty gray of the reaction with boiling water and aluminium. Some don't like to eat ore drink out of aluminium products because of health issues. I don't care. The history of the set goes way back too 1880. There was a copper version who looks very much the same as this latest version in aluminium sinds 1944. There was even a plate steel version for some period during WWII. Recording to the type name M40. The lack of a hook on the bealhandle and the two missing D-rings is mansioned in de commend below. Essensial items. Also a kupka in the oval form of the pot. Great kit.

I went ahead and ordered this and found that the after-market cooking kit they send with it is very unsafe. The pot handle is short and doesn't have the two steel loops for inserting a stick as does the original design. The handle metal got so hot cooking scrambeled eggs that it set my towel on fire when I tried to grab it. The pail does not have the steel loop wire for for use with the pail handle notches for safe hot water pouring. The Svea burner worked great with the original windshield. I am looking now for the original cook kit, and highly warn others, especially young people that this cooking kit they send is not of the original design and very dangerous.

Agreed. The military ones are the way to go. The DDR and Polish cook sets also fit with a bit of fiddling. They are not perfect but are safer to use than the Mil-Tec pots shown here. I use my trangia or my DDR/Swedish mashup whenever I'm away.

The Finnish army actually used little plastic bags to line the pot. Not for cooking obviously, but for eating food that was distributed to the guys from a big cooker. No cleaning needed, just throw out the plastic bag, and no upset stomachs because of leftovers rotting in the pot, but it did generate lot of plastic waste. This was when I was there at some point in the last millennium, no idea what they do now.

And that's the difference between getting it online from overseas and finding it in a surplus store while living in Sweden. I got mine for about $2 years ago :-D Oh, and mine has a dark grey paint on the pot and lid, which was apparently an older standard. It makes no practical difference, it just looks cooler.

Yeah I have two of the stainless steel mess kits. I bought them for $25 each years ago. The aluminum ones are good, just not nearly as good as the stainless steel ones. The one in this video is a knock off. Its missing its D rings and bail hook. I have one. It was $25 dollars are built like garbage. Most of all it doesn't have the stamped emblem at the base of the handle. (BIG GIVE AWAY) The black burner base is real. Its got the stamped seal. The alcohol burner is not military, (yes the Mil ones..they do crack at the lid.. I have like 6 of them and they ALL LEAK.. grrr) but the fuel bottle is. I can't believe how the prices for these things have GONE THROUGH THE ROOF in the last year. Another GREAT piece of mess kit is the Helikon... Stainless steel, and built like a Tiger Tank.

Your review is only 6 days old and Velrsteleka is Out Of Stock and has no idea when it'll be available. LOL and DAMN IT!!! Excellent review. It looks rock solid. One question, the Base/Windscreen; what is it made of? Aluminum as well, like the pot/pan?

Hmmm... someone could make a pretty penny if they were to use steel and make the pot legs out of spring steel AND removable. That way it can be used if necessary over a wood fire. Interesting... very interesting... ;-)

You’ll pay about £150-200 for a good stainless one and £30-35 for aluminium one, they’ve gone up silly in price. Brilliant bit of kit hence the price. I keep my stainless one under a close eye! There’s a lot being stolen from camp sites and backpacking trips. It’s the most stolen bit of kit, keep a watchful eye on it, I keep mine with my knife, bought a small battery fishing line alarm as soon as it’s moved alarm goes off.

Hi Will! Wow, 150 pounds, thats a lot of money. I found the Stainless M40 set today in my local thriftstore (in the Netherlands). Paid 12,50 Euro's for the set with post-war windshield, large Trangia burner and spirit flask. Can't wait to test it out.

This is a nice setup and review. But, Luke, I reckon that there's something wrong about the compatibility of the parts being used. First and foremost, the military version of this setup used a much larger scale burner. It would have produced a much larger flame and heat signature. Secondly, the reproduction pot and bowl most likely will have differences between the original version with regard to metal alloys and will likely heat up with a pattern that is NOT optimized for the use the original alcohol burner.

the early production ones were stainless steel, but were considered to be too heavy for military use so the design was changed to aluminum. that's why the stainless ones are rare and ridiculously price inflated these days with all of the miss-information about aluminum being toxic.
@jonn3132

I read that the reason they switched to stainless steel for a few years was because of the lack of aluminium as this was during the war and imports were very limited, steel however we had plenty off in Sweden. Switched to aluminium when the war was ending as it was lighter and easier to produce.
