Built from 1936 Popular Mechanics Magazine "Midget" Engine, Does it really Run?

The 1936 issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine featured a two-part article about a small four-stroke engine constructed from castings. I crafted the patterns out of wood and cast them in aluminum and brass to assemble the engine. It operates quite efficiently on regular gasoline. I also incorporated a PM Research "dynamo" to generate power for a small light.

Entertainment before all this electronic witchcraft. Making things like this brings a pleasure & satisfaction no game on a cell phone could ever match, and the learning experience is priceless!

I’m sure there’s something with the spark of older style engines messing with cameras.. if so you can definitely hear it here!

Yes! I don't know why but it came out in the video. Thanks for the comment.

Very cool little engine. I respect the fact that you made your own castings. I have gotten to the point where I will only build engines of my own design and cast them myself. I go to steam shows and see the same "kit engines" over and over. When someone looks at my engines I want them to say "I have never seen that engine before" It makes me smile..

Fred Thanks for your comment! Designing an engine would be a great leap for me. Maybe we will meet at a show sometime. I would love to see your work.

That is excellent, back in the day when E-Bay or computers didn’t exist, you had to actually think things out. Most casting kits or plans were for model boat engines.

Yes, it's true. Before the mind numbing drone of TV it was easier to find time to think thing out and turn those ideas into something interesting. Thnaks for the comment.

So.. how harsh would it be to make a small knuckle head V tween like the one's in the Harley Davidson?? By the way sweet video! thanks for posting it.

+Migueldeservantes Thanks for the comment. It wouldn't be much harder than what was done here. There are a couple of "build" articles in Model Engine Builder Magazine, one is called the "Hoglet" It's a Vee twin, even has a quick starter. Here is a nice one ukposts.info/have/v-deo/fYGDrnmFgm-WsKc.html

I have never calculated the compression ratio of this engine. The bore is 1.25 in.

Hello everyone, I have the exact type of engine but I am wondering what gas to put into it? Its four cycle and takes oil in the crankcase, can anyone help me?
@gwheyduke
@gwheyduke 10 місяців тому
You can use ordinary pump gasoline, sometimes I borrow from my lawnmower can and just add a few drops of oil to the tank. Gasoline is smelly and hard to wash off your hands, so I have started using Colman camp fuel, Wal-Mart sells "camp fuel" that works fine and is less smelly. Again I add about 4 drops of Marvel Mystery Oil to the model engine's fuel tank to aid in lubrication
@gwheyduke
@gwheyduke 10 місяців тому
The original instructions call for a table spoon of 30 Wt engine oil in the crank case before running. This usually seeps out through the crankcase halves or bearings after just a few minutes of running. That's why I add a few drops of oil to the tank before running
@ChristineMacWhirter
@ChristineMacWhirter 10 місяців тому
@@gwheyduke Thank you so much for getting back to me, I am using airplane gas (nitro fuel) with 25 to 1 ratio oil mixture, would that be ok for it or is that way to much oil.
@gwheyduke
@gwheyduke 7 місяців тому
Nitro fuel is OK but it pretty expensive. Wal-Mart camp fuel is also alcohol but its much less expensive. Just add a few drops of Marvel Mystery oil to each tank.@@ChristineMacWhirter
