Highlights as Korea's Choi Byungchul wins Bronze in the Men's Individual Foil during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

I get annoyed whenever someone criticizes Choi for having "barbaric" or "un-pretty" footwork. Even more so when they try to say that this means he has bad footwork. The thing is, while unorthodox, his footwork is considered the best in the world by many. Why? Because IT WORKS. IT GETS HIM TOUCHES. HE DOMINATED THE BOUT. His footwork best achieves what the ACTUAL goal of footwork was: to be able to move sharply in any direction at any point in the movement. The fact that he was "everywhere all the time" is a testament to how GOOD his footwork is, not how bad it is. He was able to change speeds quickly and efficiently and was able to control himself (didn't fall over, center-of-gravity stayed center, etc.) all the while. This is sport fencing, not classical fencing. Also, I, myself, think his footwork, while not classical-pretty, is amazingly cool to watch in its own way. He's like a ninja! He can do all the coolest moves with ease. I'm not trying to be mean to anybody, but seriously! There's more to footwork than just being pretty. That is all :)

Ben Carlick as a former foil and now sabre, I can tell you that whether or not footwork is pretty really doesn’t matter. As long as it’s effective and dominates, then it’s fair game.

@RandomThoughts choi took part in a south korean variety show called master in the house in 2020. He said he's on the smaller build for fencers so he had to compensate while following the rules. He did a demo against the number 2 (junior? as he seemed to be around 16yo-ish) national champ and it was amazing (he explained what he did and made fun of himself losing a point) even though he got winded pretty quick, lol. He kept pressing how you have to be agile, agile, agile.

I don't know what defines 'a brilliant footwork,' but I cannot see anything wrong with Choi. He's just creative and flexible. Being fast as you can is also important, however, that doesn't mean that you're good at fencing. You should be able to handle every moment without hesitation, and be flexible to attack your opponent efficiently. As I am saberiest, his footworks and the way he plays are kind of... interesting and resfreshing.

Well I wouldn't say its ugly or bad. Its actually tactical brilliance. In fencing, the key to winning is: 1.) Fast footwork. 2.) Strong blade control/technical use. 3.) A very analytical and tactical mind that allows for lightning fast reflexes and thinking of a new strategy. Choi is noted to be a fencer who is especially strong on 3 and also strong on 1. Baldini is strong on 1 and 2 but not 3 at all. Choi is able to create diverse strategies in a flash creating difficulty in countering.

Baldo's Olympics were plagued by the wireless system! See also the team gold match, replay of Japan's 38th touch at about 1:15:00; the flick MIGHT have grazed onto the valid target before signalling a touch. Here, Choi's bad conductive undershirt cost Baldini at least one point. There were a few earlier on that looked questionable (should have been valid) as well. Anybody know the FIE's required specs for the conductive t-shirt? Notice that the bad one was an All-Star, the replacement an StM.

The Italians are known for their passion of the sports they pursue. I none of the Italian fencers I have met have been arrogant. Passionate and proud of where they come from yes but not arrogant. You should learn about the Italian culture before casting judgment. Also, celebrating every touch is simple to explain. Ever watch Sabre? They often both scream to try to convice the ref that it was theirs. Every nation has fencers that do this, just some commit to the display more than others.

call at 14-12 to 14-13 is wrong (although hit is awarded correctly) - Baldini's parry-riposte misses, but then Choi's remise also misses, giving Baldini priority back. Anyone else agree?

I'm not sure how you call 15-14 "dominating" the bout. His footwork is a bit off the wall, but you don't get points for classic footwork, you get them for touches, so what does it matter. I'm curious, though, who the many are that say it's the best in the world.
@bencarlick9874
@bencarlick9874 10 років тому
My apologies if I was unclear...I was in a bit of a rage. I get quite passionate over this type of stuff. By dominating, I don't mean the score. I mean that he is controlling the bout. He is controlling the footwork and the handwork, and you can tell because his opponent is reacting to him 90% of the time. He is the actor, his opponent is the reactor. And exactly, it doesn't matter if it's pretty, what matters is that it achieves the goal: he's able to move in any direction at any given time from his guard, and the fact that he's "all over the place," as some people are saying, is a reflection of that. As for who the many are...well, for starters, the coaches at my club (experienced coaches who not only have very good national results, but have trained national champions and are very well-informed on the international scale), many fencers that I know (I myself am an active fencer), and many people (fencers, referees and coaches alike) that I've met at tournaments and national events as well. I'm not international quite yet, but I'll see what the international opinion is then, perhaps :D

Choi's fencing is ugly, but it isn't "bad". he one because he was able to control the tempo of the bout enough to where it was fenced at his style, allowing him to overcome Baldini's technical superiority. fencing isn't just about how flawless your technique is, its about being able to manipulate the bout and your opponent. and for all you snobs complaining about the yelling - turn the volume off and get over it! their terrific fencers, it doesn't matter all that much how much noise they make.

14:35 is that pervert cameraman recording Choi change? XD
@thomaskim6971
@thomaskim6971 10 років тому
Neither. Since really, you can't card someone just because during the bout their lame started to malfunction. If it was before the bout that the lame malfunctioned then the fencer would most likely get a red card therefore giving a point to the opponent. In this case, since the lame malfunctioned during the bout, all they have to do is change into a new lame. If they do not have another one of their own lame, then it becomes an issue of most likely forfeiting.
