" aint nothing wrong with starring at your phone, " Cal's entire Breakfast Club segment was about whats wrong with staring at your phone. I know the younger gen has grown up with this tech and social media bu the's telling you whats wrong about it, just like someone talked about how harmful cigarettes were back in the day. How did that work out? People getting cancer and people still smoking

Exactly! I have a web-based business, so I'm very clear about why I use social media, although I do my share of trash talking on FB w/friends (privately). I started a business IG several months ago and essentially stopped using my personal IG. It suddenly became a complete waste of time to use the platform for just scrolling and liking random nonsense.

@@crowdfundyourdream I feel you. I first got on instagram because you can post artistic photos and such or creative things - even just general photography of nature and various things. I got rid of Facebook in 2013 when I realised I was just scrolling endlessly and resenting all my friends. My anger towards friends went down afterwards. Trouble is I replaced it with Instagram and Twitter. About two months ago I realised I was hooked on instagram but I thought about how little engagement I made with the images i was scrolling through. Even things I felt inspired by, I wasn't meaningfully looking at them. So I left Instagram and I don't miss it. Twitter was the biggest issue for me. I'd muted loads of things and was having fun conversations with a regular group but I was very conscious of how it was warping my perspective of people - you see the worst of people on twitter. Issues that the average Joe doesn't care about is constantly thrust in your face. It makes you react constantly. I've been off of Twitter for about three weeks and I was surprised by how quickly I've adjusted to not being on there. I've stopped hating the world as much! Here's to a bright social media free future👍🏼😎

I'm happy a platform that appeals to young people is finally discussing this!! As a Psych major with a minor in communications, I am convinced that social media develops (and exacerbates) social dysfunctions, social anxiety, groupthink, and information overload in ways that are crippling to American culture. Social media conglomerates could totally engineer social media in a way to make it more constructive and functional, yet they exploit America's lack of discipline and addiction to over-indulgence.

Social media is good in moderation. Out of all the platforms, youtube has been the most helpful because I learn best from detailed short videos not just a quick posts or articles. I graduate from medical school in 2months and honestly I am not ashamed to say I learned really cool suture techniques from youtube due to doctors from around the world taking the time to post quality content for others to learn from. Not to mention I love the study with me videos because in medical school there is alot of isolation one has to endure to get our s**t done!

It does give you something to do when you bored. As soon as there is a moment of silence or waiting, you doing something on your phone. And when you don't do it and are alone, it's feels very strange to suddenly... people watch. But isn't that what books, magazines and tv's in waiting rooms are for? Gives you something to help pass time and helps you divert your eyes to some kind of activity? I know as a kid I always carried my gameboy and game gear around.

When i was a teenager and bored i called my friends on the phone, i chilled outside with my friends or go have fun with my friends; i would write, draw, sing, dance, interact with family or just watch movies or regular tv. That was back in the 90s and early 2000s. There's always something to do besides playing games or being on social media. It's all about creativity.

Bruce Lee I get it, sincerely I do but that’s not what those apps were made for. I understand Mark Z bought IG because they are one in the same: IG is a digital telegram and Facebook was created to keep in contact for those that were away at college; and those who were in college, to do the same. Question: Do you know what a telegram is and what it was used for, initially? People have bastardized these apps because THEY WANT EASY AND QUICK. It takes the grunt work out when you need the grunt work. I don’t want to or feel the need to express who I am for a bunch of nobodies - that’s insecure af! Who gives a shit, really?! Need someone to speak to go to you school counselors or find one.

Thank you Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM and Guest Carl Newport for this Informative Video. I recently asked my Two Grandson's, Nephew and Great-Nephew what they enjoy doing. None of them knew. Their response was: "stay at home and play Video's". It was so sad, as I was prepared to take all of them: Go Cart Riding, Laser Tagging, Swimming, Rock Climbing, Movie, Fishing, Walking The Pier looking for Sea Creature's and/or going on a Nature Walk. I thought they would enjoy this. I was blown away at their level of addiction to the Internet, Video's and yes UKposts. Also, their lacking knowledge of their own personal interest's. I deleted Instagram awhile back and never looked back. I plan on doing Facebook next. I noticed a spike happened when people started using social media to promote businesses, you started seeing a lot of content just pouring in with no real value but to get you to their page so, they can sell you something. With relationships it doesn't necessarily mean someone is cheating because they don't post you but there have been cases where people were.

It causes anxiety/depression when you're comparing yourself to others while not thinking of what it took for them to get to that level. The comment section and irresponsible Meme sharing is the devil lol and is NOT based in reality or logic; just too much negative energy.
