It’s so dumb that there is a waiting period for every gun. I understand a wait for your first gun as that may weed out folks buying a gun impulsively for crime or suicide but after you already have a gun what’s the point? Any harm someone might do with their second gun could just as easily have been done with the first gun.

As another West Australian shooter, it's frustrating for everyone involved with firearms in this state. I'm still baffled at the nerve of Cook and Papalia. The new laws (which thankfully aren't in place yet) could be enough for me to leave WA, but as we all know, laws like these never get repealed in this country. I fear WA is a testing ground for the rest of the country. EDIT (posted this further down, but I'm also going to put it here in the off chance I can change even one person's mind) - We already have extremely strict safe storage requirements, and Australia is already one of the world's safest countries with regards to firearm crime and the public. These new proposed changes will not make a dent in organized crime and trafficking of illegal firearms (in fact, anecdotally, I argue they could even bolster the illegal firearms trade, as more than a few people have told me that they will simply "call up their mate" and get a firearm illegally if the new laws make their lives too difficult), all that will come of them will be increased costs, red tape, and hurdles for law abiding firearms owners, and the clogging up of an already struggling mental health sector. As a legal firearm owner, I am worried. The legislation is vague, it's overreaching, it's unsustainable, it unfairly punishes people like myself who do the right thing, AND it won't even achieve its stated goals. Australia absolutely does not need any further restrictions on firearm use (and I'd argue they've been excessive for too long - there are many, many hypocritical and nonsensical rules in place that amount to little more than fearmongering.) People who commit crimes are already barred from owning firearms, and heaping yet more restrictions onto the backs of legal firearms owners will never change this. The Western Australian government has zero opposition, and is able to enact any laws they wish. This is EXTREMELY dangerous to a democratic nation - when a government has no opposition, it means that democracy is effectively dead. Western Australians need to realize this, and they need to realize it fast. Papalia and Cook are engaged in nothing more than security theatre, designed to target a minority of Australians that the public have very little empathy for. Today it's firearms owners, but tomorrow, it could be you - and they will have no opposition to prevent them from enacting any laws they wish. Anybody that is passionate about the environment, political landscape, mass surveillance, etc. who attends protests or voices their concerns online in Australia is in very real danger of having their rights taken away, and Australians are too apathetic to do anything about it. We NEED to start caring more as a nation, because privacy, civil liberties, and freedoms have been eroded beyond what I could have ever feared over this last 15 years particularly. Australia is in a position that must be carefully-navigated, or the next two decades are going to see things become very, very difficult for the average person. Just a few things to think about. I urge you to look further into these proposed laws and really think hard on what they're really trying to push with them (and it has nothing to do with public safety.) Ask any legal firearms owner - we are some of the most responsible people in the community, because we have permanent targets on our backs. We CANNOT afford to screw up, or we lose our tools by force. The data backs this up; so why these new laws? Who benefits? Who gains more control as a result of them? Why even further restrict laws that were already extremely effective? Every Australian loses when laws like these get passed, because they'll eventually come for all of us. Don't let the corrupt, power hungry crooks win, or modern Australians are finally going to realize what they're going to lose - and will realize it too late.
@permissiontoshine
@permissiontoshine 5 місяців тому
We don't have a decently functioning alternative government here in WA. They got wiped out and that's a huge part of the problem. It's fundamental to democracy that regardless of what side of the aisle you sit on, you have to have a robust opposition. That's why Cook and Papalia are like they are. Too much power in the hands of too few. When the going gets tough, the tough have to get going, no matter how far the chips are down in democracy. If any of us, regardless of the issue we are fighting for, or the side we are on, walk away, that doesn't achieve anything. Not having a go at you. Having worked as a systemic advocate on very very touchy, sensitive subjects relating to the most marginalised, discriminated against individuals in this state a decade or more ago, I know how tough it is. Those of you who can have to keep up the good fight. I had to walk away because of my own circumstances, so I do understand why people do.

@@permissiontoshine I get ya. I have too much keeping me in WA as it is (business, family, friends, community, etc.), so leaving is just an empty threat based on frustration. It's hard to sit idly by while more and more autonomy and freedoms are taken from people, while the government abuses its majority power by bullying firearms owners, knowing we have very little public support as it is. Today it's shooters, but tomorrow it's activists, protestors, privacy advocates, etc. Australia has a horrific track record in these areas when compared to other first world, democratic nations, and we're sleepsprinting into authoritarianism. The majority of Australians don't see themselves as free individuals, they think only in terms of what they're allowed to do - and if they upset the government, then they'll be sent to bed early and have their toys taken away. This societal attitude is beyond toxic and self-destructive, and politicians over the last decade have really taken advantage of it... and it scares me on a very deep level to see so little opposition to it. If I was more forward-thinking when I was younger, I'd have honestly moved stateside by this point. As it stands though, I'm not young enough to start over again, and so all I can do now is educate people on what they have to lose as a result of the political landscape lately, and hope that things turn around. I fear for Australia's future as a 'free' country, because as far as western democratic nations go, we're far closer to the likes of China than we are the USA or Europe. It keeps me up at night sometimes. Just the thoughts of a West Aussie who remembers what Australia used to be like pre-9/11. Life has only gotten more controlled, monitored, expensive, and bleak since, although you could say that about the rest of the world. With all these laws enacted for our 'safety', rates of depression, hopelessness and anxiety sure have skyrocketed - at some point people need to ask themselves where the line should be drawn, because if the point of life is to reach a state of free contentedness and purpose, then a bubble-wrapped society causes far more harm than its goals are trying to stamp out.

As a shooter myself, good luck if you think you’re going to get any support at all from the average Aussie, especially from the younger crowd who live in more and more urban environments or from the huge numbers of of immigrants coming into this country. What you’re doing here is just so far removed from what the “average Australian” is these days you may as well be living on Mars to them. I go through many brands of ammo before I'm 100% satisfied with the function of my rifle. Some of my rifles only work perfectly when I reload the ammo myself. Unfortunately, ammo manufacturers are not worried about perfect loads and tolerances. They are just in the ballpark. As an Australian citizen, it is not that hard to obtain a brand new firearm capable of the round throughput he requires. Especially if you have permission to shoot on a property as this guy would. Semi-autos are even available for contract shooters and primary producers. He lacks either enough money or sufficient time to arrange one (yes we have waiting periods but they aren't excessive - 7 days in my state, sounds like longer in his, he doesn't say). In my opinion, it's unethical to head out there with a potentially defective firearm that could malfunction when he needs it the most, such as if he made a bad shot and leaves an animal wounded but can't follow up with a mercy shot. The way he shit talks deer hunters or roo shooters saying "this is a different game" - it's all kind of faux militaristic but he's shooting camels that stand and stare. If you're culling and it's unpleasant, why film it and make glorifying remarks about what you're doing, but then clothe it as a opinion piece about the firearm laws in your state. It just looks like a cover to blast a bunch of camels and put in on youtube. Or think of it this way - who in their right mind would think this video will positively sway public opinion in favour of firearm laws, jesus. I'd prefer he just said "I have fun blasting camels" or "I shoot camels for both fun and as a means to preserve my monetary return on my agricultural property". Just guessing here, but this guy is probs ex or wannabe military who seeks recognition for what he sees as a tactical-adjacent activity. Not a lot else to do out in country WA I guess.

@@sebastionbach Just as someone from WA myself, our wait times for new firearms can be literal months due to the 'license the firearm not the shooter' system, and we have no semi-auto centrefires available for private use - catgeory D is for government and military only, which is ridiculous. WA easily has the worst, most nonsensical firearms laws in the entire country, and they're likely to get even worse. Australia doesn't have a gun problem, and introducing even more restrictions is pointless.

Savage model 10 and model 110 are very cheap here in the USA. are very accurate and pretty much indestructible. My model 110fp i bought in 2000, ive put 2000 rounds through the pipe and still have tooling marks throughout the bore, the first time i shot it, i put 80 rounds downrange in the first day and 120 the second day. And i was loading up and shooting each box as fast as i could cycle the bolt and reload till i knocked off each box and i had to walk 200 feet total to get the next box. That was the cool down period at which time id do a fast bore punch and swab then try to burn another box of 20 as fast as i could. I had also put a ceramic coating on that needed baked in tu cure it. It's a 30-06 and my shoulder just went numb. But i did carry that bruising for a month and a half. It is a heavier barrel than than a sporter but it is not the 1 inch barrel like the old M-40 i was issued when i was a Marine and i don't have as good of optics that that goat had, but i can stalk and hunt all the deer that I'm allowed in Nebraska and my rounds hit where the cross hair is settled on, and most of my kills are within 300 meters at most, i don't like risky shots, but most are usually less than 100 meters. But at the range i can still group a 5 inch pattern at 1000 meters, im not the same level of health as i was in 2000. I was 25 when I got this iron. But at the range, i usually shoot at 600 meters the majority of the time. My groups are a bit tighter there than 1000. And i don't get out to practice as much as i did earlier in my life, and shooting is a diminishing skill.

Gday Jack As a 45 yr involvement in firearm sports in WA has drawn to a close for me , now in QLD I can offer you a workable solution to your rifl6woes. Go to a tikka t3cx action with a 20 inch barrel and mate it with a MDT or similar chassis system. Totally configurable to your needs and gets rid of any bedding issues you are having with your tikka heating up in the factory stock. Optic option is a 1 to 4 variable short barrel scope. With the above set up use MDT maps, double stack them and twill have a spectacularly accurate, reliable set up which will make chopper and ground shooting all the much easier. And yes I have studied the Wa Legisand act back to front. I gave up trying because of the divided approach WA had. Too late now to try and be united the horse has bolted. And you have a majority govt that will fi as it likes. The big effort has been left too late I am afraid

I wholeheartedly agree with every word you've uttered, however we need to be clear in our definitions and open our eyes to the big picture. Firstly, it's not the labour party in its historical sense, it's a socialist party and its long term multi generational goal is total control of every aspect of society. That total control is gained bit by bit, year on years and all in the name of the greater good and if you speak against it you're a radical, a reactionary, a racist, or a homophobe and you get vetoed on social media. Every attempt to change the law or the constitution is supported by violent rallies and protests to intimidate normal people into accepting what they're being told to do. Remember the mob rallies and abuse we got when we were told "go with the vibe" and "if you vote no you're a racist" or when essential workers lost their jobs because they didn't get a jab or wear a mask. It's happening in WA it's happening in Qld and it's almost totally complete in Vic. Wake up Australia there's a lot more at stake here than wearing a mask.

There is a serious disconnect between honest shooters and the general public. People do not understand. My reply is "next time you drive out there, i'll just not rock up". The look of disbelief that no one would come is palpable. People don't understand that land can only support so many animals. Pest animals put natural species under serious threat. You walk up and head shot a camel, rabbit, fox, goat etc and everyone goes nuts. Shooters have lost the PR war in this country since 1996 and there is no way to get it back that I can see. I hate it, have voted for so many years against it and nothing changes. We just get railroaded again and again. We have lost and it's just a case of trying to keep what we have now and it's all going

Hope all works out for you in Australia 🇦🇺 we in uk have been having police clamping down on legal gun owners still plenty of illegal firearms being used by criminals but must be the legal owners fault politicians have there own agenda not the wishes of these they are paid to serve.

Exactly the Same thing happening here in South Africa. A massive agenda here to de -arm the civilians. There are more illegal firearms out there. They need to clamp down.on Criminals not us Law abiding citizens

Another thing: It's there any worry about people being in the area since the terrain is so flat? Also who cleans up the bodies or is it left to feed the predators?
