Also have to remember that the flex tape is being weakened with each hit. There are lots of things that are strong on first impact but weaker on subsequent impacts. Car seatbelts for example are supposed to be replaced after a serious accident as the stress on the belts by that first accident can weaken the belt. That goes to show that the Flex tape performs even better than shown in the video.

Also the table is on sand/dirt. The peak deceleration of the objects is reduced since the legs can dig into the ground, and lower acceleration = lower force. I think the outcome would have been different had the table been on solid concrete.

I loved how Gaunson accidentally actually explained the bubbles in the ice. H2O when in liquid form holds a certain amount of air dissolved in it. Ice can also hold some dissolved air but not nearly as much as when in liquid form. So as the liquid turns to ice, some of the air is expelled and trapped. The outer sections are clear because it is the purest ice. All of the air and other impurities are pushed inwards. So the bubbles are basically not trying to escape the bar. They were kicked out.

One thing you could add is that the block freezes outside in which ends up trapping air in the midsection
@Ripen3
@Ripen3 Рік тому
Water and dye have different freezing-points, water freezes first. The bucket freezes from the outside inwards, freezing the water first around the edges and then eventually the dye last, in the middle. Same goes for trapped air, the water freezes on the outside, pushing air in towards the center. What I can't explain is the "shooting air bubbles". Looks really cool anyhow!
@jayisbirb
@jayisbirb Рік тому
the "shooting air bubbles" is caused by the mixture from the food coloring being pushed towards the center. As the outside layer freezes, it forms a shell that has a slight negative pressure (cause water expands when it freezes, meaning there's the same amount of material occupying a larger area), so as the food coloring is pushed towards the center, it creates little mini-vacuums in it's wake. Long story short, those aren't actually air bubbles, but little bubbles of "nothingness" (I use quotation marks cause I doubt it's a true vacuum and there's probably a little bit of something in there, but there's likely not much)
@danbert8

@notfirstTHERMAL
@notfirstTHERMAL Рік тому
@@jayisbirb Hmm yeah, I'm not sure about the negative pressure, if the ice is being frozen in an enclosed vessel (as it was), it's expansion would create a positive pressure - it's why cans explode if you leave them in the freezer! As danbert explained, the bubbles are air that has been forced out of the ice's crystal structure and have coalesced into bubbles.

What we see in the ice block is actually a defense mechanism from the food coloring. Similar to porcupines, when food coloring (specifically of the red variety) feels threatened, it sends out protruding spines to ward off the danger. In this case the danger was the cold temperatures if the freezing water. Unfortunately this specimen was unable to fend off the ice, becoming entrapped and leaving us this incredible visual of the battle.

5:20 I'll take that challenge. When liquids freeze, they form crystals and typically these are well organized. But if they freeze quickly, they don't organize as well as they could if this was done slowly (slowly reducing the temperature). I believe what's happening is that the dye isn't soluble in water at low temperatures, so the dye and the water separated (think oil and water), forming what look like bubbles. Due to the size of the sample, the inside cooled more slowly, forming a semi-regular looking structure that the dye can help us visualize. It could also be gas bubbles that got frozen into the ice block, as cold gases are more soluble in water than warm ones.

@@zxXEROTSxz It would explode and actually form water again. If you split the water into gases (as in separating the oxygen in H20) in the same chamber somehow spontaneously, you'd have hydrogen gas which is highly flammable, and oxygen gas, the other typical component necessary for an ignition. Pure hydrogen ignition just produces water as a byproduct, so you'd be back to where you started. The oxygen in the water that occasionally forms bubbles, or that fish use to breathe, is just dissolved oxygen. It's still O2, it's not chemically bound to the water.

As ice freezes, the formation of the colored portion is dependent on two things: How fast does it freeze, and is the freezing restricted to one direction? The best way to get clear ice is to place the water in an insulated cooler and place it in a freezer to allow it to freeze slowly. This give the water time to push all impurities (shown as red in this case) to one side of the ice. Then when taken out it then shows a mostly perfectly clear block of ice.

So with the ice, that's air normally in water that gets trapped when you freeze it. This is partially caused by freezing it from all sides at once. If you instead insulate the water container on all sides except the top, it will directionally freeze from the top to the bottom, and it will push out all of the air, and make a block of ice that is clear like the glass orb, and significantly stronger and denser. Also stays colder longer and doesn't break apart easily in your drink (and is nearly invisible, a cool party trick). Just need to use a cooler, or make a styrofoam box around your container.

Answer to the quetion: The answer has to do with trapped air bubbles. Liquid H2O can hold a certain amount of impurities dissolved in it. Ice can also hold some dissolved air, but in much smaller amounts. Thus upon freezing, the water has more air than the ice can hold, and the excess air is ejected out of the freezing water. In the case of ice cubes in the freezer, the freezing process starts from the OUTSIDE and works its way into the center of the ice cube. The air that is ejected from the freezing surface is then ejected into the center of the ice cube. Since it can't escape, this air eventually forms trapped air bubbles inside the ice, causing it to look cloudy. Clear ice, on the other hand, is formed by directionally solidifying the ice, that is, freezing the water from one end to the other. This allows the excess air to be pushed from one end of the ice slab to another, eventually getting released into the air as the last of the water solidifies. Since the air was not trapped in the ice, its appearance is transparent. Variations of this technique are used to produce ice sculptures, ice cubes for restaurants, and many other applications in which clear ice is needed.

Probably won’t get seen, but here’s my comtest answer: Water freezes from the outside in. This forces trapped gases and solid particles toward the inside of the ice block. These concentrated impurities cause that opaque, textured area in the ice.

yes, but with the tape around the edge and under to the other side. this way it matters only elasticity, not the grip. because the grip does not sum, like the thickness. only the first layer will count. And that edge is quite thin. If that table had full sides, and so a full meter of grip, reckon would have stayed stuck.
@benweieneth1103
@benweieneth1103 Рік тому
Yeah, you can tell in the atlas slowie at 12:37 that the tape lost a lost of edge grip during that bounce, so it failed on the next drop.
@alphaomega95
@alphaomega95 Рік тому
Genuinely impressed with how well the tape held up. From what I can see. a lot of it comes from the flexibility of the tape itself, meaning it can deform (bulge) a lot, absorbing the impact over that distance, meaning it doesn't experience as much force at a given time compared to e.g. bulletproof glass, and hence it doesn't break. It's kinda the same idea as using a blanket or trampoline to catch someone jumping from a height/out of a building, and also explains why the exercise ball didn't pop. Great video and great slowies on this one :) P.S. Stanford - I think you look great with both short and long hair. It's always great to experiment, but in the end go with whichever makes you feel like your best you :)
@05edb
@05edb Рік тому
A lot of it comes from the fact the table is in sand so acts like a spring, thus absorbing most the impact. Would like to see this with a table on solid ground.

@@05edb as well i think they went around without breaking the tape meaning when you would push on top it would lock up after being stretched similar to a Chinese finger lock bet it would hold vs bruce if it was the first time

@@05edb we also have no idea how much flex tape they actually used, the same thing can be done with regular tape, if you use enough. Imo if they wanted to show how effective flex tape is they should have done like a similar one with regular tape, or start with 1 layer of flex tape and work up (but that sounds way too time consuming)

So what's actually happening in the iceblock is something known as the cryoconcentration effect. When an aqueous solution freezes, the liquid does not freeze uniformly. Some parts of the solution freeze first, typically the outer parts, while the liquid closer to the center freezes later. The solute, in this case the food coloring, is pushed towards the unfrozen solution by the ice front, increasing its concentration (hence cryoconcentration). This is why the outside of the ice block is clear and the inside has the food dye.

For the bubbles. Air is naturally absorbed in water. When the temperature changes, the change in energy causes the Air to come out of the water creating air pockets as it freezes resulting in what is seen. The mixing of the coloring added more of these air gases that can come out and the color makes a nice contrast.

The outward movement of that expansion, coupled with the nearly frozen molecules of water causes the coloring within the water to expand out with the water, simply showing a more clear visual of that phenomenon.

ice tends to freeze from the outside in because the freezing process leaches heat from the surface before working its way towards the middle, and most water has a good bit of atmospheric gas dissolved in it, like the carbonation in a soda. As it freezes, that air separates because there isn't enough energy to keep it dissolved, but since the surface is already frozen, it gets stuck inside the ice as the water continues to freeze around it.

5:19 Welp, my best guess is since water freezes from the outter most part in. The air bubbles that were stuck in place on the sides of the container y'all put the water in were slowly guided inward. As the water froze it created pressure within the remaining water pushing on those bubbles and as the freezing process continued a trail of tinier air bubbles were left behind. I'm not exactly sure how the trail has a turning affect, but maybe that is just the camera. I'd love to know what Dustin thinks from Smarteveryday.
