In the fourth episode of Retro Review, Joe Ferguson is throwing it way back to 1986 with this classic set of Mizuno TP-9 blades which found there way into the hands of some of the game's greatest players like Sandy Lyle, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sir Nick Faldo. But can they still cut the mustard against Mizuno's latest muscleback iron release in the Mizuno Pro 241 iron? Be sure to watch to the end to find out!

This is the first time I've seen one of your club reviews. I'd like to see more. You have no wasted time.😺

38 degree 7 iron, that puts the 8 at 42, a 50 degree pw, no need for a gap wedge! Most of my irons from the nineties were a little stronger lofted by then, cavity backs of course, all my eight irons were 40°. The wing back style reminds me of some ancient MacGregor's! Enjoyed the review!

The older Mizuno's always dented unlike today, softer material... utterly butterly

I’ve been playing golf for almost 2 years now, and I’m a Mizuno guy all the way. I played independent baseball my entire adult life (where I also exclusively use mizuno), and an injury led me to picking up golf…it’s become an addiction. After I developed some skill in the game I started to put aside my beginner clubs and move up in quality. I have a set of these exact irons I bought on eBay, and I also grabbed a set of classic Tommy Armour original 845s, which I love. Besides costing way less, I find the used clubs play just as well as the newer ones. My 3,4,6,8,PW are the mizuno, and my 5,7,9 I mixed in my 845s. Other than those 3 irons, every other club is a Mizuno. Driver is a classic TZoid 9.5, I have a 22 degree CLK hybrid and a craft satin II putter. I don’t use fairway woods. My wedges are all Mizuno, JPX Gap wedge 52, S23 SW 56, and an MPT LW 60. My lob wedge is my ultimate ‘go-to’ club for approach shots within 40 yards. I have a Callaway FT I-brid PW that was my go to when I started. Really odd PW. Had the feel of a hybrid but with pitch wedge capability. That’s what’s in my bag currently. Eventually I’ll go all out for a 2-3000 dollar Brand new Forged Mizuno set. But like I said, newer clubs don’t help my game as much as they hurt my wallet. So not a worthwhile investment at the moment. My average score is 82. I’ve played 137 rounds of golf so far at as many different courses as I can get to. I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and the selection is exquisite. I also work at a Private country club, so I have access to free golf on a PGA course anytime I want. I often finish up work around 9:30pm and will spend 2 hours on the driving range or on the putting green, so I’ve gotten in a lot of golf in less than 2 years. From what I can see, I’m better than 65% of the members at our country club, most of whom have been playing for decades. I literally never golfed in my life before 2 years ago, and I just seemed to take to it. No lessons, I watch UKposts videos on form, and I use an AI tracker analyzer to film every shot I take and break it down frame by frame, and that has helped quite a bit. I actually started playing right handed because I was using my father in laws clubs, and actually did better before I bought my own and switched to left. The problem with left is that it was hard to distinguish my baseball swing from my golf swing. Whereas right handed I didn’t have a baseball swing, so there was no muscle memory to compete with. If I could go back I would have bought right handed clubs and stayed that course. My lowest score was played right handed, it was 79. As a lefty I have yet to break 80. I’ve never scored over a 91.

Yeah but, but, but, the TP9s are wingbacks, my favourite style of all, so it's the TP9s all day for me. (Plus you can pick them up for a song if you can find them)

I was thinking about buying a set of old Mizuno for the winter, so enjoy this video, but had to have a little chuckle when you were looking at the spin numbers at first, and you said the TP 9s might be compromised because of the grooves might be a little bit worn. Yeah 40 years old would do that 😂

I had a set if TP9's 1-SW. They were great and one of the best sets I've ever had. I seem to remember that the blade length was slightly longer than my friends TP11's making them slightly easier to hit.

Had a set of these back in the day when I used to get relatively near the sweet spot. Cracking looking timeless irons.

i wish you hit the older irons in a 6 iron and the 241 in a 7 to get coser in lofts.

Joe The Pro!!! I have the JPX Hot Metals and love them but I find myself playing my old Wilson Staff Tour Blades from 1977/78 model. Sure the number on the bottom don't go as far as my Hot Metals with the same number but distance is not what golf to me is all about. Good stuff Joe!

Very good review! I bought and still have a set of TP-9s….found them at a used shop in London back in late 2001. I haven’t hit them in years but this video may have enticed me to put them back jn the bag for a round or two.

Great review & good to see that the old blades can still perform - if someone purchased a set, would there be an option at local pro shop etc to have the grooves re-set?

I still own (and occasionally play) my original Titleist Tour blades (1-PW) from the 80's. Still feel amazing but I do have to adjust distance. The PW is 49 deg. about the same as a modern gap wedge. I think the original price was $249 US. The latest MB irons $1400 US. I don't think I'll ever get rid of them even if the sweet spot is just the head of a pin.

Nice review Joe (the pro). I say the market for blades is shrinking. Maybe a blade up to 8 - 7 iron but even the pros are looking for help in the long irons

Great review. Out of interest would it make sense to test the 7iron of the old club vs 8iron of new one?

It would have been good to see the numbers of 6 iron vs 7 iron so the lofts were comparable

Why would you not use the old six iron for the comparison, the lofts must have been closer

I'm surprised you didn't use the 6 iron of the TP9 in the comparison test with the 7 iron in the new club. Bit pointless test otherwise.
