I went the other "extreme" with a mini electric as a city car. I charge it 3 minutes down the road once a week and because the batteries are small, the car is light a zippy. Fantastic fun. I have an old Ford SMax for the more than 100miles trips. It really feel like riding an old noisy smely vibrator. It's great for the long trips but whenever I can I'm in my mini having fun. It was only £23K.

Look at how far EVs have come in the last 14 years, imagine how far they will go in the next 14 years. New growth usually follows an S-curve as well, so advancements should happen even faster over the next decade as more and more is invested into it.

While I don't disagree with your argument, many people don't buy electric cars because of range anxiety. Even though majority of them will never need it, most of the time, some people want to visit relatives once a year in a different state for example, and don't want the hassle of diverting their route.

Right now they've had an administration is talking about installing $500,000 charging stations. I don't know any more details beyond that but that is something that we could do within five years. This is a very solvable problem let's not blow it out of proportion. As far as the electrical grid is concerned, there is some validity to that: we will need more electricity. That is also a very technically solvable problem that we already have these solutions to. We just have to do it. Fun fact, if you include the no-build stand-off zone of a nuclear power plant, you can get as much power per land area out of a current nuclear site as you can out of a solar and battery storage site. There's plenty of land out there. We don't have to build another power plant that burns anything. There is plenty of sun coming down and hitting the Earth that every single electric vehicle could be powered by what is an overwhelming majority of renewable energy, particularly wind and solar.

I'm a Canadian climate campaigner and a long time MKBHD fan. Love the podcast. Wanted to add a bit of context to the discussion of Canada's fossil fuel vehicle ban. What is interesting to me is that in Canada (at least in important swing ridings) it's a political winner to be seen as a climate leader. You would think people living in the suburbs would not be fans of EVs but overall this is part of an overarching narrative about climate leadership coming from our Prime Minister and it's been something that wins votes in the places that mater to win elections in our Country. I'm hopeful that people are starting to understand how nice it is not to have to pay for gas. Especially if they drive big F-150s. They have also invested in more public transit and high speed rail. These things would actually do the most to reduce emissions from transportation overall and they could definately do more of that. But I digress. Going into an election Trudeau is doubling down on being seen as green. The other sub text is that to win votes in Alberta and Saskatchewan and some rural parts of BC Trudeau has supported massive expansions of the Canada's Tar Sands, one of the biggest sources greenhouse gases and the dangerous new pipelines that facilitate expansion. Many environmentalists critique the government's future focused announcements while doubling down on some of the worlds dirtiest and highest ghg intensity fuels. Personally, I'm very glad Trudeau made this announcement. I'm glad y'all are talking about. It's fantastic. That being said it's important to understand the context of what the news has been about Canada recently. The horrible news of thousands of Indigenous children's bodies being uncovered in graveyards in residential schools across the country. I've seen some people sinicaly suggesting this announcement, that actually costs them nothing, is a great way to get headlines about something positive instead of this terrible history and current reality that many are just waking up to Canada. Anyways... It's complicated. Just thought you would be interested in some of the back story. Cheers.

To highlight one of the ideas of my last very long comment: If you take the land area associated with many of the major highways, and I'm talking specifically about the Southwest part of the United States because there aren't any trees to cut down (but even in the case where there are trees to cut down that is a surmountable problem), Make a solar system on either side of a major highway and also perhaps in the middle section of divided major highways and have it go out whatever number of miles from the city is necessary and that seems kind of like a really good idea. As close enough to the city so you don't have a huge transmission line losses and each city can produce their own power and it doesn't have to involve the burning of any fossil fuels. I'm not sure why we haven't gotten together and done this yet. For places that are far out in the middle of nowhere do the same thing but have local battery storage and you don't have to make hundreds of miles of power transmission from a place where there's already power to a place where there isn't power just so that people can drive electric vehicles. Use the self-contained semi truck mounted megapack, solar, supercharger model and I think we've got it made. We don't need any new technologies or massive breakthroughs for anything for that to completely work. And more congested areas that may be more of an issue with land use and rights of way and all that kind of stuff but I feel like it could fix a huge part of the problem.

As someone that is outfitting a 4runner with camping things and wants to build a trailer with a kitchen on it, that pull out kitchen is pretty tight. Would rather it be a gas stove though and like Andrew said, it should expand out the other way so that it does not block the doors. Either way I am very excited to have an EV for camping/overlanding. Just more storage and a lot of battery power to power things off of.

In my case I just bought an Ipad pro and will definitely keep it as my “main” computer once my macbook pro dies (I will just get the keyboard for the ipad when that happens). My thought process was simple, now I have a job and from now on going forward will always get a PC from employer so the need for a personal computer is almost none. I would need to update my cv once every couple of years and the rest is browsing, netflix, disney+ etc and I’ve found that VPN’s work better in IOS/IpadOS than on computers. But I do need something for personal use because, in my case, I cant access netflix from my work computer. So yeah… thats my hot take.

Since we are concerned about charging electric vehicles on road trips why don't we use some of Tesla's current ideas like prefabricating supercharger stalls on a concrete slab and putting that on the back of a semi truck and it can be delivered to anywhere with it being most of the way complete already. Build it in the factory and then just add a few connections when you get to the building site. Back to the point: since we're worried about long distance travel primarily as far as charging infrastructure why don't we use the rights of way on our roads and line those where the solar panels and then stick the batteries at or near pre-existing gas stations or rest stops. I live in the southwest part of the United States and there is an abundance of sun, trust me. We have tens of thousands of miles of roads out here and they're just sitting there waiting to get solar panels put on either side and in the middle of divided highways. It's land at the state already owns operates and maintains. All you have to do is throw some ground mount solar panels up and I believe we've got ourselves a solution for it a large percentage of electric vehicle charging needs and so far as long distance travel, without having to add any more strain to the electric grid. In fact, I'm 100% positive because the arithmetic bears this out, that if we lined the majority of miles of interstate highways it would be more than enough electricity for travelers to use. Then, once these long and linear solar installations got close enough to populated areas, we could make grid connections to the local towns and cities and have they last, whatever, 50 or 60 miles of solar panels feeding into the cities, like legs in a spider feeding the body. Not only does that have enough electricity production for all vehicular travel but you can also shut off all the cold burning power plants that currently power cities because it's that much energy. We could even take the unused electricity and sell it to places where they don't have quite as much sun. That's another point: just about every place has enough sun. Even dreary places like the UK and Ireland have plenty of sun for solar power to be an effective solution.
@JasonEllins

@nrbnine
@nrbnine 2 роки тому
Definitely need more charging locations, and we're slowly getting there, but think about this - gas stations still need electricity to pump gas so they're not really better off when the grid goes down. Imagine having solar panels on your roof to charge your EV during the day, and if the grid goes out your EV can power your home at night.

Getting the right information out there is also key. We do not need as many chargers as there are gas stations. We all know the statistics on that. The overwhelming majority of recharging electric vehicles is done at home. People who live in apartments can also charge at home. For now, most of them are stuck running on extension cord out of there window which isn't great for a lot of reasons but it does work. It is also entirely within the room of possibility that apartment complexes will install level two chargers to one degree or another, hopefully to a large degree so that they are ubiquitous.

Rivian pop out kitchen: I think you've missed the entire point. Yes, it will be used by a minority of people but for those who do use it they can leave their entire food prep setup at home. This is a big saver.of time/effort and frustration. The user can take 30 seconds and pull out an entire kitchen worth of stuff instead of having to go to six different places in three different compartments of their vehicle and get out a cluster of third-party devices that don't interact with each other well. This is a massive space and time saver because not only is it using space that was otherwise not used in previous types of vehicles but also they don't have to store a separate camp chef stove with a separate 25 lb propane tank and all of this stuff takes up a lot of space, money, risk, time and effort. Saving time and being more convenient on a camping trip is fantastic. The fact that it doesn't take up any space in the bed or the cab of the truck is amazing. Nobody's going to care if you can't open one of the four doors in the vehicle. Just go in or out of the other three doors. That's only a problem if you wanted to be a problem.

By some measures the electric vehicle rapid charging infrastructure problem is really only as big of a problem as the mainstream media makes it out to be. When I think of an infrastructure problem I think about building the railroads from the East Coast to the West Coast 150 years ago. I think about building the interstate highway system. I think about, and especially Jermaine to this conversation, putting in an entire nation of gas stations. Those are things that had no previous rebuild infrastructure to loosely follow. Building a gas station takes quite a lot of effort not to mention permitting and handling of hazardous materials. We already have well over 90% of the electrical infrastructure in place. All I have to do is the final dozen to couple hundred ft of electrical wiring, some circuit boards, and the point of use electrical infrastructure vis a vis the actual hardware of the actual DC fast charger. It's not like we're wiring the entire country for telephone use or electricity. We already have the overwhelming majority of the electrical infrastructure in place, it's just connecting the last dozen feet or so and putting in that hardware. These are manufacturable items that we already have the manufacturing capability to produce. Tesla is doing it to the tune of 20,000 per year. With the right mix of funding in the right manufacturing we could put out $200,000 per year and be done with the whole thing in just a couple of years. This is a very reasonable problem to tackle. The main problem is the media coverage around it.

Canada is an interesting use case for EV's. If you look at a heat map of the population, the vast vast majority of the population lives close to the southern border and it's not hard to imagine making infrastructure work. But then there's these absolutely massive swaths of rural territory with extremely low population density - tons of highways they don't even bother to pave, for example. My guess would be that the government would set up some kind of waiver program for those edge cases of people who live way out in the sticks and have to drive long distances in remote areas.

48:00 That new technology could be Touchscreen+(iOS)(MacOS)+Rollable Display or Foldable display with virtual keyboard, might be Phone+Laptop+Tablet (I might have watched too many concept videos). But the question is, that "new tech" gonna be 2030 or Apple way of making it 2040

11:50 I have to strongly disagree. Switch Black is possibly the worst name you can choose for a new model. It gives the impression that this is a new color for the switch. Nobody will think about the screen with that name. OLED is not great, but it isn't bad either. I think that + would give the impression that this switch has better specs that would improve performance, as it happens with phones.

EV's aren't going become an everyday thing until there is a nationwide charging infrastructure in place. Also the time to charge needs to get faster. New building of homes, apartments, condo, and others new to either have chargers or be ready to add a charger.

There aren't term limits in Canada. Our previous PM was in office for 9 years.
@TheTonVeron

The longest consecutive term was 15 years. I'd be surprised if Trudeau passes that by 4 years. That would also make him the second longest serving total, let alone one term.

Canada’s Prime Minister is also on a 4 year term. The limit is 3 terms (total 12 years) but you have to win 3 elections for that.
@brentpeterson6052
@brentpeterson6052 2 роки тому
Hmm. Is the term limit something new? In theory a Canadian Prime Minister can serve indefinitely as long as he/she can retain the party leadership and the party can keep winning elections. That said, it's pretty rare for a party to win 3 consecutive elections. The best a government can hope for is to get the ball rolling and hope that enough short term benefit accrues from something like the 2035 target that they can get re- elected...or failing that, the program develops enough inertia that the next government doesn't want to risk dismantling it and the original government can keep the bragging rights.

16.00 When it comes to EV's, I see most is how long it takes to charge/how many times during a week and how far is the nearest EV charger. Once charging gets faster and the places we can charge in lets say 10 mins, increase, a lot of that anxiety or worry about owning an EV will go away. 24:00 I think banning the sale of new gas powered vehicles is totally okay. On the flip side, any country that goes about doing this, needs to make sure the infrastructure is there and in place to make the increased demand when that year hits. We can be rely on one company or two to provide all of the EV power needs. In the gas world today, we have BP, Shell, Royal Farms, etc.

Unfortunately the electric charging infrastructure in Canada is garbage. I wanted to go electric for my latest car, but was kinda forced into buying a plug-in hybrid.

Why not make the ipad as another version of the macbook? I feel that would be the way to get Apple to give the ipad more desktop features or even an OPTION to run MacOS. I think the important thing here is to give consumers the option. The ipad pro with magic keyboard/apple pencil can already be more expensive than a macbook. It could just be an alternative macbook with an option to dualboot ipados and macos.

for the tabbing of items on your screen. For me it is something that will NEVER be used(only MASSIVELY irritating to accidently do and try and undo) with the current hardware. Maybe if we have some massive expandable screens but realistically it is just annoying.

Does anyone know of any studies evaluating the environmental impact of (1) mining for precious metals to make enough car batteries for the world and (2) recycling batteries when they're end of life? I hope we're not just trading one environmental problem for another.
