I worked in every field I could find work in. Photography: doing little league photo's, weddings. Painting portraits people and pets too! I had to learn digital when I went for a job interview and did not get hired because I had NO Computer skills! Now semi retired, I am back to traditional Art methods! Watercolor painting and now soft pastels is something completely new to me! Just gotta keep trying to learn and grow!

I would highly recommend looking up game jams and joining one! They usually are 1-3 days, involves people who have been gamedevs for YEARS and want to help out others. As someone who has been working in gamedev (as artist/unity artist), I try to join atleast one each year and it's not only super fun, but I learn so much each time! Don't be afraid about the first one, unless you have been gamedev for years on end, everyones first gamejam is a heartbreak and visual/code/design chaos. While the idea of making a game in 1-3 days seems crazy, it helps you understand the steps better. For example, 1. how to plan out the game (plan the big picture-> create the base-> add additional elements one by one ) 2. how to create the visuals ( concept -> simplified version ingame -> improve, improve, improve)

I wish I could go back and show this video to my family 10 years ago! They made me give up my art because it wasn't a 'realistic' life goal or career. It was do what they wanted or be homeless, those were my options. I am now trying to rebuild what I had back then and build it into what i wanted way back then. I was almost there too! So you don't even have to be a student coming out of HS/College, you can be 10 years after being forced to give it all up starting over. It's a long hard road but if you have the passion for it, you can do it. Never give up!

I actually got accepted into Ringling for illustration too- but couldn’t go because I just couldn’t afford it. It broke my heart because I REALLY wanted that bachelors in illustration. I have an Assioates in fine art (just finished in 2019) and I’ve been trying to find an art related job. Been a huge struggle this year, but I think it also boils down to what type of art job I want. Which I have no clue. There’s so many different art jobs that I got really overwhelmed 🤣 so here I am trying to figure out what art job I should try. My fear rn is not finding an art job at all

I wanted to do art as a career when I was in high school, but was quickly shot down by my parents with the whole "there's no jobs in art" thing, so that really deterred me from pursuing it as more than just a minor in college. Now I'm working on improving my skills and style and such, and I'm at a place where I'm much happier with how I'm drawing than ever before. I'd love to do storyboard and concept art for characters, prints and commissions, too. I think people also don't realize that advertisement is a huge area for artists! Look at Coca-Cola, Nike, Addidas, etc. Someone had to design those logos.

Heads up for any artists looking to do freelance/independent commission work at home (and possible others as well). Not a lot of people like to bring it up but NSFW art is not something to scoff at. You can get quite a bit of NSFW commission work to help supplement and fill gaps (pun not intended) in your commission schedule as long as you're not offended by pornographic material. And even if you're not someone willing to do this kind of work, you will still probably be asked about it by the people looking for it.

I’ve always liked drawing and put in the time on a paper. I’m a artist that would look at a photo like comic art, or anything and just start sketching, I haven’t got up from leaving that position but I do plan too. It’s just that, I changed my major to CyberSecurity because you know more money once you’re in the program but realize that it isn’t for me, it’s been a awhile since I sketch anything and I’m just afraid of what will happen if I go back. You know how the usual things is, “parents saying that you won’t get a job for doing drawing or being a artist.” After watching this video, I want to go back to my skill and improve it more, have the chance to love something I do again. Thank You. And this time, I will go back to majoring on art degree.

This was a big help. This is information I've been needing. I did graphic design in highschool, Illustration and Fine Art in College and Animation and Illustration in University but as far as work is concerned I've managed to go nowhere (of course the pandemic started a month after University which obviously made things much harder, talk about timing). Now I'm pushing 28 and I'm concerned I won't be able to make a start. I have gained the impression from some other artists that if you don't get in early then your chances are very slim. Not exactly a motivating thought. I'm a cartoon/graphic artist and I do wonder who, if anyone, would be interested in my work. I've done a small handful of commissions in the last year but no real work. Having knowledge of alternate pathways really helps.

I would suggest drawing a line between doing art as hobby and as work. I work as an artist in a game studio and let me tell you, there is a very clear difference between drawing game assets and what I draw in my free time. While both of them are highly dependent on anatomy/composition/lights/shading/colors.. It highly differs and it can get confusing. Just focus on improving, do art and sketches. Don't focus on trying to master everything, think what you really want to do in the future and follow that ( I know game artist who really wanted to create a cute simple childrens book, but they drew highly detailed pieces for work. You think " oh but they can easily draw this epic scene, how hard some shapes and doodles could be? " simply put- hard. because its completely different from what they are used to) Don't give up and follow your dreams, do your best!

Dave, you mentioned making a huge leap with your portfolio your junior year once obtaining a tablet. I am currently going into my senior year and have been worried about producing enough volume of work within the time I have left. When you were going into your last couple years of school, was there a certain goal you set for yourself in producing work to prepare you for the industry? Between other things in life, and battling procrastination, I find myself with a lot of anxiety worrying if I will have enough quality work to show when seeking jobs. Do you think there is a reasonable amount of pieces I should strive to produce each week/month before stepping into the industry?

I'm almost 18 and I'm currently doing commission work for album covers and that type of stuff. But I don't know if that's what i want to do in the future. I feel like i could be successful, i have the drive for improvement, but i really wanna work in the art industry and I'm honestly very confused as to what path I'll be taking, because my main focus currently is illustration work and concept development i guess. I don't have a theme in my art yet, too- and i feel like i will figure my theme out eventually but the uncertainty is nerve wracking. :')

I was fortunate to be show my work to one of the higher ups and they worked with me on doing some logo design and even commissioned my 1st art piece.. ^^ Now I got a bug, got a vision that I'm trying to push for. Logo Design, Illustration... and I also want to do comic work... I hope Denver "Comi-con" (it got renamed) comes back and I'm hoping to have a portfolio ready to show off :)

Hey Dave, I’m currently enrolled in Syracuse University’s illustration program for a BFA. I start my first year in a few weeks. I’ve been thinking of staying here for two years and then transferring from the university to an art school. Ringling is one of my top choices to transfer to but I don’t know if I have the money for it. I was wondering if you could maybe tell me a little about your experience with the school, what it has to offer, connections I can make, and would it be worth transferring.

I’m about to get my associates at my community college in the summer this year and by the fall i plan to transfer to a university. Though I still don’t know exactly where I should go in the field, especially watching so many videos about concept art and how fast you must produce. Personally I’m good in every medium but I’m a slow painter so I feel like I wouldn’t make it in this field sometimes😔

I kinda want to be a story board artist And I’m glad there are other people in the same situation as me, My parents are very strict (especially my mom) and prefer the money before the enjoyment and that doesn’t help at all because I think they are just anxious and doesn’t know that much about art. At least my dad supports me at 100% but I feel like he just prefer that I do traditional art like. And If someone sees this, can you help me please ?

i live in a third world country. im still thinking whether i should do it. Art careers here especially full time jobs have a tendency to give really tight deadlines, pay dirt cheap, and forced unpaid overtime. I might try to find a way to get better and make myself useful but for now I'm still thinking whether I should quit.

I'm an artist myself and I graduated 1 year ago from design and I have still not found a full time job in art, even though it is my main goal atm. This video gave me so many options and encouraged me to pursue my dream on becoming a concept artist or comic artist. Thank you!

Well I'm 28 this year and I just started to drawing as an complete beginner. In the future I would love to make money this way (as an artist), but I'm afraid I started too late for being professional artist + I always want to be at least very good with things I do, and for now I can't see myself to catching up to people who started with their teenage years, or even earlier. I hope there will be a place for me in game dev for making concept arts, or something smiliar.

Hiya Dave! Love your art and videos. I was just wondering if you think it's possible for someone to have an art career even if they didn't go to art college/school?
@joeywheeler2771
@joeywheeler2771 3 роки тому
Absolutely! I am finishing art school this year, and it is definitely a costly investment. I have found that art school is good for those who don’t have the personal drive to practice on their own, as well as make connections. Personally, once I learned how to properly practice and learn, I found I didn’t really need school to teach me everything. The only reason I have stayed is because I have already made it this far. The internet now, especially with all the creators making tutorials, it is so much easier and cheaper to get the info you’d normally only get at school. If you practice fundamentals and try to create work even a couple days out of the week, you’ll see quick improvement if you persevere. As far as connections go, I have friends that have been able to make more connections than through school by just participating in online art events and reaching out through social media. Like Dave said, find something that you like and go for it. The better you get at one skill, will make it that much easier to learn and master other skills. From there, it’s just putting yourself out there and having fun with it! (Also, ArtStation learning is a great place for cheap tutorials and art challenges. A lot of lectures they have are exactly the same as they teach in art school)

Yes, absolutely. Art school is just ONE way to get there.. there are so many professionals that never went to school. The degree you get from it is pretty un-important in the end.. in fact I have found most studios could care less about it. I personally needed school to give myself that drive and inspiration.. but it is certainly not needed.

I am currently a high school student but freelance already and I see my future really uncertain. I am not satisfied with my artwork and I am afraid when the time will come and I have to find a job my skills are still not enough. Dream about working on MTG and that sort of thing so my portfolio mostly consists of illustrations. I also have that problem that I mostly draw animals and anthros and really need more human art. And of course, I want to achieve a more realistic style and that frustrates me most. Have half a year to skill up and graduate before I will actually do something about my career

i know i'm late to the party with commenting on this video, but i'd like to ask Can you still enjoy art once you make it a career? everywhere I go, all I hear is people losing their passion because they tried to make it a job. I'm afraid of the same happening to my art. That the thing i used to love will end up as just a chore and that i won't have the passion or motivation to work on the projects that i've been building up to for years now with my art.
