I feel like you are selling yourself a bit short. A lot of people watch your content not necessarily specifically based on the topic, they watch it because they like you. Ive tried watching other restoration videos and i cant stand them. You have a very special, unique and charming manner.. and people love that first and foremost. Secondly, you can definitely earn money with shorts, it’s about 100x’s less than normal videos, but shorts have the unique ability to gain 100’s of millions of views. So in a sense, the earnings potential equals out. And also you can gain a MASSIVE amount of subs via shorts. It is true though that subscribers and views from shorts don’t carry over to the long form content very good. All in all, people love you. Maybe theres 100’s more channels out there, but i choose you. Good luck in 2024

I love your channel, but I have to say that the reduced income from patreon is directly related to the fact that you're making less videos. People supported you because they liked your videos. Once you started making less of them, people can understandably feel like their support is no longer worth it since they're getting less content. Not a rant. Just pointing it out that some of these are consequences of actions taken. Have a good one!

Not to mention a good half of his videos now are about his games or other projects like the Commander X16. Don't get me wrong, I think that stuff's cool, but it's not what got me watching the channel in the first place. Old hardware reviews, restorations and all that stuff is what made me a subscriber. I think a lot of people are probably like me - not as interested in more videos about Planet X3, Petscii Robots, X16, etc. Not throwing shade at David, just being honest. :)

What drew me to your videos was the restoration videos, you would also give a little history a long the way and it was very soothing to watch. I think people just enjoy watching something that's in terrible condition and watching it be restored, that's why there's so many of these automotive will it run videos. I stayed because of your personality and editing style. Be careful about getting away from what works on your channel. I know of MANY youtubers who had a specific thing that made them unique and stand out, and they went away from that to pursue something that they thought was more interesting and they lost 90% of their viewership. Yes some of those videos seem repetitive, but that's only from your perspective, take a step back, maybe do some periodic polls with your community and ask them what type of content would they like to see? Because the audience decides what they want to watch.

As a longterm viewer I want to give some honest and upright feedback. Actually I am one of them who shifted towards alternative channels. And the reasons were not meantioned at all. I shifted simply because the content changed. In my opinion a lot! I love this channel for it's informative and retro aspect. Beeing a software and tech developer in my 40s, I smelled some 8bit air when I was a kid. I started with the 8088 and was too young to own a VIC20 or a C64. But seeing how it all started and learn the basics in a real easy way, was my instant catch. This channel got me really hooked. I remember the video about 8 bit graphics. That one was HUGE for me! And I think all the retro tech audience might feel similar. But then all the X16 and Robots stuff started. And it's nice to see somehow. But I don't own a C64 or any other old machine. And I am not going to buy one either. So why should I be interested? In those vids there is no informative aspect at all. They are about a topic I cant (and dont want to) use. Without any retro aspect, because its newly created software. Emulation is not a thing, because why would I? There is tons of pixel art games on steam. This channel, in my opinion, is already a niche channel. And X16 or Robots might interest a very small niche inside this niche. The ones owning actual 8bit machines. A second thing is the missing informative aspect in newer videos. I understand, that the mainstream audience might change the video because they dont want to use their brains and could get overwhelmed with a video using broader vocabulary and is longer than 15 minutes. That was actually even meantioned in several videos. But now for me the crunch in missing. It feels like eating soup without salt. Other channel do have this. They take apart things like this channel used to. They explain or hack them. They show things. So... that is what I want to see... Yet I would rather see them in this channel again instead of somewhere else. Because I love the style and the way its explained. Once there was a quote on this channel that goes: "...ok, so let's take this thing apart. Because....that's what we do!"

I want to add some possible topics that I'd love to see: For me it would be really interesting to learn what role that 8088 played (as a kid I got this as my first computer from my dad when he bought a 2 or 386). Also those old machines had co-processors. Why? And how did that work? Maybe that fits in somewhere.

Hey David, long time fan of the channel. I'm sorry to hear about the decline in revenue, as a YTer myself I'm aware how tough things are right now. I don't wanna pile on, but I do think a lot of great points are being made that you should really take to heart. (1) The decrease in uploads is probably responsible for a large part of the decline, not only because there's less videos to collect revenue on, but also because with infrequent uploads people who weren't subscribed may stop getting recommended your videos. (2) I can see how much passion you have for the X16 and the games you make, but, (and I think you should make whatever videos you like) I don't think they appeal to as wide an audience. (3) I think it's your call if you don't want to make restoration videos, but I'll bet many people only watch you do restorations, *because* you are a lot like us, a hobbyist, not a professional and your process of how you troubleshoot is very interesting. I think eliminating them entirely might hurt the channel, but again you have to like the content you make. I wish you the best in 2024, and I hope you take comments like these, not as criticisms, but advice from people who want to see you and your channel succeed.

I really want to point out, that even when you're subscribed, you also stop getting recommendations with infrequent uploads. I watch UKposts every day and it happens regularly that I lose sight of channels. then one day I remember them, wonder why they didn't upload anything just to discover I missed 6 months of content because UKposts stopped recommending them. I still think the algorithm is not as half as good as people say and it's an unfortunate truth that uploading many videos helps a lot. I value quality over quantity, but the algorithm doesn't.

THIS. Like it or not, youtube creators get pigeon holed, whether they want to or not, simply because there are so many channels to choose from. Interests can be very specific and you can watch very specific things on UKposts. Seems that most channels, once the become successful they think "wow, now I can do anything I want and branch out." Nope. Doesn't fly. I've been watching since the first days of UKposts and I've now seen probably a dozen channels go that route and flounder. As technology has advanced we've gone from "broadcasting" with limited media channels to "narrowcasting" (cable and internet). Bottom line is that you gain an audience doing something and that's also how you keep an audience. Whether you get bored doing the same thing over and over is irrelevant. It's how the free marketplace works.

Agree Dave's hosting skills are unmatched by the majority of UKpostsrs producing content today. He's also clearly spoken and polishes his videos way too much.. the high quality is the enemy of the quantity. He has what they call a "Voice for Radio" and could easily have gone into Radio in years past and done well. I think he has many talents.. including those as a Drone Pilot that are underutilized.. if I had the capital I would fund him and build up a content genera unique to his skills. Dave was an early entry into the UKposts scheme and they do poorly not to pay attention to what he has done over the years. I kind of wish Spotify had snagged him at the same time they got Joe Rogan and enabled him to produce even more high quality content. - He reminds me of what we have in Texas called the -"Texas Country Reporter" touring the landscape and the Timescape of technology.. living in the Present but fascinated with the Past.. and connecting things with the Future. He's our own Marty McFly and Doc Brown rolled into one. Its a shared depression when he gets down or flinches at griping criticism. I do wish.. or would suggest.. he get into Time Capsules for the Future however.. I think he could turn taht into a interesting series.. at least once a year.. thinking about how to communicate with the year 2100 or so.. working out where, how to sequester it.. who to leave it with.. and how it would be found so far in the future. Arcades are kind of like that but so narrow cast for the near future.. maybe he will work up to something like that.

Dave is probably not getting a lot of reciprocal feedback on his restoration videos, or he's seeing the numbers drop off as the algorithm stops recommending them and perceives a lack of interest. Like it or not UKposts is the new TV Guide for finding stuff today and unfortunately it steers people upon rocky shoals sometimes and content creators get mislead. The best way to counter act that is Leave a Comment after ALL restoration videos.. good or bad, preferably highlighting what you like so he can focus more on that.. the Comments have a larger impact on the Algorithm than people think.. but Dave can't use that tool.. only viewers can. People tend to ASMR or passively zone out when they are getting more of what they like and that leads to less of that type of content.. and he gets paid less for it.

"How would that piece come out from the Hydrogen peroxide?" - "How would you troubleshoot such a problem?" - "How good would be the before/after comparison?"... Seeing old piece of technology be taken care feels really good! Then came the days of Commander X16 and news about your games.. and like you, I'm not the kind of person that goes under the video and comments "Not interesting" - I just skip the video... But that implies that I'm not sending you a percentage of my Premium subscription, and I'm also looking for other creators/channels that can give me what I want. And I don't see it as "supporting smaller channels" per-se, but rather like "I have one hour of lunch break, and I want to enjoy some great content. What's on the plate?". If I don't find anything interesting in my "subscribed" feed, I start looking for newer channels that I may like. That's how I discovered the SerialPort museum, or Cathod Ray Dude, for example. Please take this comment for what it is.. a long-time viewer, that really enjoys your content and your style, and wants your and your content to be successful, that is giving some honest feedback under a video where I feel it's appropriate. Cheers from Italy!

Seeing a big decrease in the frequency of videos as Commander X16 development progressed, I'm sorry to say I thought the X16 project was the cause of the lack of videos, and so I found myself resenting the X16 itself, a little bit. I hope I didn't express that feeling; it's the sort of project I would absolutely have loved to have done ever since I was a kid and I wouldn't want to... rain on someone else with similar feelings. (Bluh! Tired! Not find words!) Anyway, now I just think it's super-awesome you've formed Commander Computers Llc! :D Besides, I like the documentary videos and especially look forward to the Atari ones. :) -- I'd love to see something of the arcade, too.

Especially when YT's algorithm favours upload frequency while also encouraging a rather narrow video duration (based on stats of click through rate and so on), which from other channels I've seen talk about it seems to be between 10 and 30 minutes. YT reinforces its own bias doing this, ie. fewer people watch all of a longer (say) 1 hour video, which means less ad exposure, so YT doesn't recommend the video as heavily, so fewer people see it anyway, hence fewer numbers to begin with, and round it goes. Shorter videos are likewise poorly promoted because YT can't cram so many ads into them. It doesn't help that YT also has so many other issues such as people being unsubscribed from channels without their involvement, like/dislike votes removed, shadowbanning, censorship, the removal of the dislike count (done purely to protect mainstream legacy media channels), a highly biased search function that favours legacy media channels, etc. YT also now doesn't give a damn about subscriber count. Dave Cullen (Computing Forever) explained several years ago that YT openly stated its intention to move towards a model where it functioned more like a conventional broadcaster (hence the creation of the Premiere feature), under which the notion of subscriber count becomes moot, ie. moving away from the platform focus being the creators towards one where all that matters is each video regarded separately, promoted or otherwise based on algorithms that follow view/interaction-related ad trends. It's like the beast chasing its own tail, YT reinforces the very things which damage channels' success, so they double down on bad policies, and round it goes. It reminds me of a neighbour's son who had a *huge* iTunes collection, but he knew little to nothing of the hundreds of bands and artists involved, to him each song was a separate entity, the 'album' notion meaningless. Recently I've noticed TV videos being repeatedly shown by default at low resolution, I keep having to manually select 1080p, and I'm on a 300meg link so download speed isn't an issue (works fine with anything else). Meanwhile, viewing YT on a TV using the YT-supplied app (like my gf does) has become a rotten experience, with insane numbers of ads, endless delays in function, consistently low initial resolution (often just 240p or 360p), annoying popup questions hunting for viewing data, etc. It's utterly different to how the TV app behaved when I first bought the TV about 5 years ago. Even the way YT presents post-watch recommendations for further viewing has changed for the worse, now one will often see very few or even no videos by the same creator after watching one of their videos; the algorithm far more heavily promotes other channels, again because YT doesn't care about individual creators anymore, they are not the foundation of the way YT wants its system to operate in the future. And personally I despise the Shorts format, but I suppose some people like it. No surprise they don't help with sub count though. In the end, YT will destroy the very things that made the platform popular in the first place.

David, the reason why people would complain about a video they don't like is because you release a video every 2 months. So that means, if they are looking forward for one of yours, and it's one they don't like, they will have to wait 4 months. To be clear, I never complained about a video. But this reason was very clear to me. Also, I respect your decisions, and you do you, but I would suggest instead of releasing fewer videos you should try to release good ones but more frequently. Don't release a video every 1 or 2 months. Your videos are part of your marketing strategy to any of your ventures. If sales are down, Coca Cola will not pull off their ads, they will look to increase their ads and be more strategic about it. I hope it makes sense to you. All the best.

I enjoy the way you talk, I love your methods, I love the care and honesty you put in there. You're not a content farm. You're REAL and you're great at what you're doing and you're CVLT. I also love the history videos and those where you present old and curious media, but I still wish for some restaurations and repairs. (Heck, I hoped one day I could send the old Yamaha CX5M synthesizer with its missing keys and adventurous history to you - so maybe it'd get a second chance. And I'm certain you'd have loads and loads of things to say about that old thing - but the shipping and customs cost from Germany to you would most likely be insane, it'd be a huge package.) When you mentioned "UKposts oversaturation", though, I had another picture in mind: The ads. The ad overdose. Unskippable, in the middle of the video, unnerving and badly made. It became unbearable. UKposts is massively enshittified these days, and I wish there was a better video platform for independent creators, free from content farms, ad-reduced, open and awesome like old UKposts in the 2000s and 2010s used to be. However, I wish you an awesome 2024 and hope to see more of you soon. (PS: I loathe UKposts Shorts and TikTok.)

I think they are the ones that add the most to the community at large, and the ones that for whatever reason nobody else is doing, (I think in part because in order to do them correctly you have to have a level of skill and a level of communication ability that few people possess and even fewer who exhibit both)... They are definitely the content you make that I've never seen anybody else ever come close to. I think the idea of focusing on that is brilliant. (slight edit to add to that)... the combination of explaining the history, and how the underlying technology on that computer works and what made it stand out, etc, etc... that's what really makes those documentaries stand out... I can see the reasoning behind the "pandemic" but it was never illegal to walk outside during any part of covid, not sure how it was over in US. Things were rolling on over here like always barely anything at all had changed. The thing is people below the age of 50-60 were pretty much unaffected and we all got covid during March-June big deal. I've had common colds way, way worse. Once this fact hit people, ie you're not going to drop dead, everything went back to normal. I do know that many sites had a big increase in numbers and I'm guessing it was because people were terrified of nothing at all because let's be real nothing has changed since 2020. The virus is still going around all the time, I myself have had covid 3 times this year I think. I honestly don't know I stopped checking back in early 2021. Dave - don't forget about your roadtrip videos - Those are always enjoyable and you bring so much to the table with your knowledge and background - how about tech history roadtrips? You have one of my absolutely favorite channels of all time and I have learned so much from your content. I grew up in the Dallas area and my dad was an engineer at Texas Instruments in the 70s and 80s and I learned a ton of stuff I didn't know about your history of tech in Texas - Cheers for 2024 and thank you for all you do!

David, your restoration videos are absolutely your best ones hands-down, and they have never felt repetitive to me, and I think most people would agree with that. I think your documentary videos are great as well, but the restoration ones are what got my hooked on watching your channel in the first place, so I hope you don't stop doing them. No one seems to have that specific restoration touch that you do. I hope things get better for your channel in 2024!

There's also another aspect to the whole youtube 'omg I haven't got enough views' irritation. Sometimes I think that every single youtube creator is very shortsighted, since they only care about the views that were made right after the video premiered. They don't really tend to think that their content is replayable and is gonna be watched 5, 10 or even 15 years from now, that some of their videos are just so informative and good that they'll be interesting or will come in handy for another hundreds of thousands of people in years to come. This is the part of the big picture that I think most youtubers fail to see.

18:20 The thing you're missing about the restoration videos is that _we_ aren't restoring things every few weeks/months. So we live vicariously through watching you and others do it. It's not boring, because each restoration is a bit different -- different bits to diagnose/fix, different retro-brighting techniques (like when you had the UV bucket setup vs. outdoor sunlight), etc.

I'll be honest I used to both subscribe to your channel and watch all the videos religiously, and also subscribe to your patreon but once you stepped away from doing restoration videos I also stepped away. I still watch most of your videos periodically but certainly not the day that they come out. I really enjoyed your time here on UKposts and I'm glad you're going to continue to make content but at least from my perspective one of the biggest draws was both your restoration and your educational content and a lot of that has ended. I do want to at least mention though that one thing that you mentioned in your video is incorrect. Long form content is not only Alive and Well on UKposts it's actually flourishing with videos of nine and 10 hours getting millions of views in days . A lot of documentary style content is really flourishing on the site another thing that I wanted to mention was that what UKposts shorts do is not necessarily turn into direct subscribers but it gets your content into the UKposts algorithm in such a way that your videos become more visible to other people. So a person watches your short and they liked it and then their channel will eventually get recommended to them as part of their regular viewing experience and that tends to be where the value of UKposts shorts lies

I don’t want to discourage, so in fact I want to ENCOURAGE. We had a retro arcade open here in Melbourne FL about a year ago. It lasted a year. It was a single admission, unlimited free play format. They had awesome games. I think some of the things that sunk them were: pricey admission, long lines for popular games, and bad (real bad) bar food. Keep this in mind, and I pray you find huge success!!
@isaacfortner
@isaacfortner 4 місяці тому
On the flipside, I’ve seen arcades in my area flourish by having a mix of old and new games, of all different types (including a healthy mix of pinball, skeeball, etc), then really good food and drinks. One had a cider brewery inside it, the other had a rotating food truck section just outside. Having food/drink onsite does seem to be a key factor to success in the arcades I’ve seen, and food/drink margins are generally better than a single arcade machine.

I also hope he does well. To perhaps state the obvious, maybe the customer is a certain kind of person. Despite my love (like?) of retro games, I don't think that person is me. I have to believe the novelty of a place like that would wear off very quickly, and I wonder how many repeat customers they ever get. I gotta believe it's hard to make a living.

Yeah, we just had two Game Time Arcades close in the Central Florida area. There was no one there on the weekdays. With all of the square footage and electricity needed for an arcade, you just can't make it on weekend-only money. But, I absolutely wish them well. Maybe Texas is a different market.
@AeroModule

How much did they charge for admission? There's an arcade around me that charges $10 Canukistan rubles, which I feel is actually too little if you're going to be there for 2-3 hours. 30+ years ago I would bring a roll of quarters in and it was gone in under 2 hours (to give you an idea of how good I was). Now that arcades themselves are "retro" I would like them to survive and flourish, but one thing I do not miss is popping off those rolls. $10 was real money back then!

Hi David, I’m going to give you my positive and honest opinion here. I have been subscribed to your channel for many many years now and I watch your videos for 2 reasons, first because of you, and second because of the content. I first connected to your channel because of the content, I remember the days of the retrobrite and video console restoration content, and that is what hooked me in. I even loved the videos on you working on your office space too. I was always amazed and so excited to watch you restore computers and consoles, and to watch you work on your office space. The way you present is very relaxing. I would honestly say personally my watch percentage of your content has dropped off due to the content change, and frequency of uploaded videos. A good suggestion is to post a variety of content that connects to all of your subscriber community. I love your channel David and I am excited to see where this grows in 2024. Lastly I’m not a fan of shorts, I enjoy the length of your videos and sitting down in the evening watching your content, and your restoration videos may not be to what other channels are doing, but it’s more about you, we watch your videos because of you, your knowledge and they way you present them. Thank you for all you do David, you’re truly an inspiration to hobbyists and collectors like myself.

I guess I couldn't say it better but I want to add that your restoration videos belong to the best here on UKposts. Yeah, I had an C64 for a few weeks and wasted around 4 years of my youth on an Amiga A600 but I'm not picky about what you restore. I really enjoyed that MoonBase restoration although I've been only one time in my life to an arcade in the Netherlands. (I'm from Germany. Back than you had to be the age of 18 to go to any arcade. They kind of changed that just before I got 18. But at that point I already had the fastest PC hardware money could buy so I didn't care at all.) So count me in for 'wild' arcade restorations.

His best videos are his Disaster videos.. where he totally fails.. but sets it aside and refuses to give up.. but he lets us know what he's learned so far. That is incredibly generous.. to all those that come after.. to understand what didn't work or why. Remember the tabletop PacMan video game where we heard the CRACK and HISS of the CRT tube? We all felt that.

As you prepare machines for the new arcade, I'd love to see videos about them. A bit of history, a little of how you acquired the machine, what went in to getting it ready for the public, and finally a shot of it all ready to go in it's new home. Be a great way to promote the arcade while putting some compelling content on the channel. You do what feels right for you. Good luck!

100% agreed. I initially came for the history and resto videos, liked the occasional personal project. In the last year and a bit though, it was mostly personal and fairly random stuff that didn't really interest me too much, and way too much focus on his game. I appreciate that this was a work of love and it's close to his heart, but I just don't have any interest in it whatsoever, so I skipped most of his videos for over a year. If this were to go back more towards history, strange hardware and some fixeruppers, I'd devour every single one of these.

Firstly, The 8-Bit Guy has been my favourite YT channel for many years. This is the only channel I have the bell set on. My favourite kind of videos must be gamedev ones, as it correlates with my gamedev passion, and it's so cool to see David make it work and even make physical collector goodies. It's a very big inspiration for me. Arnold once said "don't listen to nay-sayers" as one of his most important life rules. In this era many people feel significant only by judging others, that's why whatever good or bad thing you make, people will always complain. It doesn't have to do anything with the thing. I also love David's restoration videos. I don't agree that other channels are making the 8-bit guy's restoration obsolete. The thing is, part of David's charm is probably in the fact that it's so easy to associate with him. When you see other DIY/resto channels, they always have very expensive big tools and machinery (like CNC, etc). Their method is much more advanced than I ever hope to be. But David feels just like a guy with some soldering iron, paper towels, some windex and whatnot he buys from a simple store for the project. And he's not a rocket scientist, but mostly uses basic logic and his passions. These are ones of the only true DIY videos, and the 8-bit guy knows how to make them interesting. So it's a big satisfaction to see every new retro-brighting, it never gets old. Even the way David makes his charts and whatnot is very associable - these are not some flashy aftereffect graphics, but something almost everyone can do with a video editor and paint. And combine that with the fact that it's probably the only big channel on YT to not constantly be having sponsored commercials, it makes it truly retro - this is the UKposts from the times long passed. I wish David luck and I hope that there will still be a lot of videos on his own projects to feed my inspiration. And maybe some restorations still? Hehe.

I've always loved your videos, and if you can find a way to keep things going, I will show up for your videos.
