Here's how it works:
The cable from the generator leads first to the circuit board's bridge rectifier, which converts the AC to DC. The up-and-down, positive-to-negative current becomes a steady positive current. Then, the cap levels out the DC voltage, producing a steady voltage inflow to the voltage regulator, as the phone only needs 5 volts to charge. Fast pedaling can produce 30V or more, which is enough to fry a cell phone. The regulator puts a five-volt ceiling on the power entering the phone.

The voltage actually varies from 12 to as high as 30V. The circuit regulates that voltage and keeps it at 5v.

Pretty cool! I'd personally put a USB port/cable on the generator so I can use any charger (and then I'll probably have to find a way to secure the hanging cable) but that's just my personal preference. I would totally use this if I had a reason to ride a bike.

Very late but I did the same thing just adding a 12v 4.5 ah battery at the output of the rectifier to act as a massive filter and to store power, that goes to a cigarette lighter adapter for use with any car charger. The lights that came with the dynamo are also powered by the battery

I used to have a jump circuit like this. You put your bike up on jacks so the tire could spin free and it was enough to jump start a small engine or charge the battery to a tolling motor.

Yes you probably can. It depends on voltage drop on the voltage regulator (7805). In calculation 6V*1,414(ac to dc coeff)-1.4 (rectifier drop) = 7.08V and most 7805 have voltage drop about 2V so there are still space for regulation. The charger stop working everytime when the voltage from generator will be lover than 7V. The other way is, that you can buy step-up/step-down dc/dc convertor which provide stabilized output, in most way, from 3V DC. But at the end 3W are less then most phone need.

as an ECE major there may be problems with this because you'd need to be at a constant speed for about an hour to get it to a good amount of charge for your phone. at the same time we were only shown the voltage not the amperage(current). So who knows how long it'll take to charge. i hope you all know of a great place to bike for an hour or so. maybe those trails that run along the rivers would help. careful it can get hot outside lol.

no and with newer iphones you would need to have 2 volts going through each data cable this can be done with (2) 22k and 33k resisters. as long as its getting about exactly 5v then it will not mess up your battery. ive made many types of iphone chargers:)

I was trying to carry out the charge your cell phone with a bicycle project however the dynamo generator that I have is 6 volt, 3 watt. My phone is a little smartphone(HTC Desire C). I was wondering if I should still set up as desribed in the video and what changes I should make in order to charge my phone with a bicycle. Thanks a lot.
