Daily Lama EP60. I take the cheapest smart trainer for a spin on the largest Zwift bunch ride - the HDR. The Elite QUBO Digital Smart B+ unit holds up really well for automatic resistance changes. I'm growing fond of it - It's the little smart trainer that could! Remember to hit SUBSCRIBE to support this UKposts channel: bit.ly/3aUph9W
UPDATE Bluetooth fixed tonight. The trainer now has Bluetooth. I may have flashed the wrong firmware when I first plugged it in.... either way... all sorted now. Firmware should be 136. You can check this using the app "LightBlue" on IOS... or even the Wahoo Fitness app will scan/see/report details on it. Remember to connect Bluetooth first after powering up the QUBO.

based on your review I ordered this and received it tonight. my first Zwift experience was difficult. The resistance just wasn't working. After an hour or so of fumbling around it turned out it was paired incorrectly to the pc. I had to pair the trainer to the FE-C option then I heard the resistance motor kick in. prior to that I was spinning out 50x34 120 rpm and showing 200 watts.... after pairing correctly it was spot on. This unit is fantastic for the price. I can't wait to dive deeper into Zwift. Indoor training is no longer boring, and I can tell I will push myself harder with this trainer. Thanks for taking the time to do this review, it was very helpful in my purchase decision.

COVID update; I’ve had one of these for 4 years, still working fine. Not as accurate as the $1k units, but I like the compact design and the convenience of a wheel on trainer. I use this with an iPad linked to a 40 inch tv, with an iPhone running the companion act. Full set up around $500. I do group rides, training programs, etc. but I don’t race. Has worked fine for all, resistance reflects the ride I am on, and does a reasonable job of replicating an outdoor ride. It does seem to slightly over estimate watts at the low end and slightly more underestimate watts at the higher end (anywhere above 300 w for me) compared to similar efforts outside. All in all has proven durable and a great value for the money

I’ve loved having this trainer for the past 10 months. Recently I’ve had issues where the trainer locks into transmitting a set power no matter the input. My first thought was to attempt a firmware update since I haven’t done that yet and your recent Garmin video reminded me I should do that. I can’t seem to figure out how to do that with this unit. Wondering if you have done it on yours and if so how you may have done this. I will likely raise a ticket with Elite this week as well it’s happening intermittently and resolves itself after the unit shuts off. Thanks. I love your videos appreciate all the work you put into them.

Just some information on the P1, P2 and P3 values for people who want to perform a manual calibration: 1. P1 refers to high slopes, P2 medium slopes, P3 flat 2. If the trainer brakes too much, increase the values; if it brakes too poorly, decrease the values So, if you feel the trainer is too heavy at 0%, gradient (Flats) increase P3 (I suggest you increase it a little, like 10-20 points, then try again; if it is not enough, increase it again) Remember at the end to select to "send the map to the trainer", so those values will work also for Zwift and TrainerRoad.

Hi Shane. Great video, thanks for all the videos, very helpful. Looking at a smart trainer and not sure whether to go with this plus power meter (something under $1,000aud - pioneer, stages) or to ditch Power meter and just get a Kickr. I like the idea of direct drive and not having extra tyre wear but power meter could be useful outside although I prefer to just ride for fun outside and plan to use Zwift for intervals/structure sessions. I've just spent ages reading through every comment so pretty sure you haven't answered this yet, so hopefully not wasting time for you answering again. Thanks again for your videos and hopefully this isn't too old of a video to revive the comments!

Great stuff, Shane, much appreciated. Calibration (changing the slope) is done with a power meter and their software. I'm not sure the QUBO has a "Zero'ing" of the offset (which some call calibration)... I'll do a video on this one day to clear it all up.

In all i was happy with my purchase for my first smart trainer. I hope that this helps.

Hi Shane thanks for this review. Sorry I just started to look on smart trainers today. I am looking for a cheap smart trainer to use with Swift. Will this one adjust the resistance by itself based on how steep is the climb? How would you rate the differences between the feeling of realism between this one and the Neo without considering the new feature of different pavement feedback? What can I achieve connecting this Qubo to my Garmin 820? Will I be able to use the indoor training option of the garmin? This Qubo or the Elite Rampa which I am also considering? Thank you!!
@gplama
@gplama 7 років тому
This will adjust the resistance based on the gradient on Zwift, yes. Feeling of realism.... it's ok. The higher end trainers have better 'road feel' inertia. The LeMond Revolution is brilliant, but isn't a smart trainer. Connecting a Garmin when riding Zwift is just what I do to record my stats, it isn't required, Zwift records everything and can upload to Strava/etc anyway. Any specific queries about how to use the unit with Garmin/etc, are best directed at the Elite support team. They're great.
@pedecia
@pedecia 7 років тому
Thanks for the reply Shane.Yeah I know they are better but the high end one are 3 and 4 times the price of this one... I do not know how they can be so much more expensive compared to this one just for some refinements. The problem now is that it seems sold out everywhere. I fund it in ebay but they want 600AUD for it plus postage. Also it looks it comes in 2 models one has also a digital wireless display and in bike99 cost even less then the other model without display but it is sold out. In wiggle they have now the Elite Rampa for 700AUD. Would you recommend the Rampa better then the Qube Digital B+ for the extra price? I read these trainers ruin the back tire is it true? Some expert recommend the Turbo smart trainers instead. Do you find this to be true? Are they better? I read good reviews on the Elite Turbo Muin Smart B+ and it is sold for around 900AUD... Thank you Shane and apologize for the many questions.

The only issue i'm encountering is the availability of the elite trainers as the QUBO and the Rampa are sold out everywhere. From what i'm reading the Tacx Vortex smart is on par with the Elite trainers. Shane- excellent video (as always). Picked up this unit last week and man was I impressed. You hit all the major points (both positive and negative) on the mark. What a game changer smart trainers are on zwift. Quick question- how big a deal is it if the roller is a little off center? I noticed my tyre tread marks are a little off to one side. I plan to try and re-center the roller but wasn't sure how big a deal not having it centered initially was. P.s. Saw you in watopia last night for a brief moment. Thanks for the ride on!

But I also wonder if it is too simple, I was thinking of trying to get the money for a Neo, but it is really expensive here. Hi Shane, I bought this trainer based on your recommendation a few months ago and have been loving it so far! However, I always seem to have a creaking noise on the Seat-stay or rear area (Too tight or too loose?). Now I'm worried about sprinting or actually getting off the saddle to push watts. Am I really going to snap my carbon bike? Or are they much tougher than I think on any trainer. Being able to swing the bike side to side on the road vs fixed rear wheel on the trainer with my body and momentum still rocking a locked-in bike has me worried. I'm one of those who only have one bike for everything . Otherwise I am considering buying a cheaper Single speed bike and utilize the ERG mode for sprint sessions. Thoughts??

@gplama

Yep! All sorted with Bluetooth. The power numbers on any wheel-on unit will be.... close.... sometimes... to accurate. If accuracy is important then a direct drive or on-bike power meter is the answer. It'll still give you a good SIM mode up/down and ERG mode training workout regardless of accuracy.

Hi Shane, I’m sure you get these questions all the time. But considering I have just ordered powertap P1 pedals with a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, is it worth saving extra money for me to get a direct drive trainer like the Elite Direto, or is a Qubo Digital Smart B+ enough to start Zwift in good conditions ?
@neilhendley1119
@neilhendley1119 6 років тому
I have the mentioned Qubo and after 10 months , it's sounding more and more like an airplane taking off. Like I've posted b4, it relies on the rider's weight for traction, thus it's no good when riding out of the saddle, unless you're leaning to the rear of the bike. I'll go with the "U pay for what U get" mantra. Time for an upgrade for me.

Great video thank you for taking the time to enlighten those of us who are interested in taking the step into swift but don' know all the best options. If I got this set up, would I also need a powermeter to be in contention with others who have the better/more expensive set ups? Wouldn't want to get something like this and sacrifice the ability to really compete if it wouldn't allow for it to be used properly. I say that because I was told that using a basic roller or trainer without a powermeter results only minimal output and means you would never win or be able to keep up with others ride with a detailed/proper set up. So, would purchasing a trainer like this be all that was needed to set up and ride? Sorry, still trying to learn about the zwift world

A power meter is a good investment, not essential with this trainer. This trainer broadcasts estimated power which is ballpark accurate if you set it up as per spec.

Hey there Shane. After your review on the Elite...qubo..B+ thingy... I'm going to go get it...(Canberra Winters BBrrrr... ) I want to get into the whole Zwift thing and use the trainer in the manner demo'ed. Ok, my question is. You mentioned that the Wattage (which Ive never used before) is measured lower then your more accurate power meter. So by how much-ish??... and is it still good enough to give me, ( a typical triathlete age group 50y/old bunch rider type) a reasonable idea to work off until such time as I can afford a decent 'on board' power tap or something similar?.
@gplama
@gplama 7 років тому
If the difference between a power meter and a cheaper unit such as this that estimates power was a known value then they'd just update the firmware for the unit and correct it. It's not that easy unfortunately. Everyone has different tyres/tubes/pressure/etc which impacts how this unit estimates power. It's close/accurate/reliable when set up optimally...... but nothing beats a good power meter.

I'm asking about the build quality and toughness of the Qubo rather than the Vortex - the Vortex is touted as flimsy and not up to punishment. Is the Qubo in the tough and well built Trainer bracket for sprints, yanking on the bars up out of the seat for large frame riders like myself? I'm 183cm and 90kg ... I'd like to know if you can tear the head off it as you put it? Cheers!
