Well said. I rented a tiny little car from an Off brand car rental place in New Zealand (there are many of them..the cars are 6-10 years old... but in general, well maintained..IME anyway) Can't remember the make...but it had a tiny engine..with a SIX speed manual gearbox. Good lord it was fun! You never went particularly fast... but you FELT like you were...it was a hoot! Especially on NZ's winding roads...

I had a Panda 750 back in the day and had a lot of fun in it. You really had to work out to make progress and it was all about momentum and taking bends properly. For the last eight years I've owned a Mk7 golf R. Love it, but it's just so easy to go quickly.

Pandas are just brilliant little things. Giugiaro, who styled the original, said he wanted it to be 'a pair of denim jeans in car form'. So it was focused, timeless, simple, and dependable. One of the icons of simple motoring.

James talking about how much fun the Panda is to drive because of the size and tires reminds me of the 1981 (I think that's its year) Toyota Tercel I learned to drive a manual on. Tiny thing that weighed nothing, but was the most fun ever on dirt roads in the middle of nowhere. My parents still have it. It's up on blocks and while the engine was still good at the time, the interior was falling apart (lining coming down, bits coming off the dash, trunk had to be wired shut because the latch had broken (would fly up going over railroad tracks), etc). Not sure it'd be worth fixing up, but it was such a fun little car.

@AlejjSiРік тому
@@709mash Well, you don't even try to go fast in it. Even if you compare the Panda to for example a Skoda Fabia, you drive them in the same way, Panda will feel much more fun than the Fabia. @kristianferrari8764Рік тому
I own a first gen Panda and have driven all 3 generations delivering pizzas. Absolutely love these cars and I completely agree with May on the twin air engine of the last generations. It's such a fun engine to play with. Given that it has just 875cc to get 85hp out of it Fiat set up the turbo to come late and strong, which means that you have like 50hp and minute consuption till 2500 rpm and then all of the sudden you have 85 and the game is on. I would love to swap the twinair into the older, lighter, first gen car
@marty6779Рік тому
Now, as a railway buff, here's My Take on the Panda: It's Like a Narrow Gauge engine. Not very fast, not very strong. But it has a charm Like few other vehicles do. It's a friend. Requires some patience, but will get you there.
@NSHorseheadSD70Рік тому
As a railway buff, I understand where you're coming from
@nothanksguyРік тому
Rather fitting. Narrow gauge brought transport to small, poor, remote hillside communities that wouldn't be served by full gauge service
@mobyhuge4346Рік тому
We Indonesians take this to heart, there's something really charming about seeing a narrow gauge locomotive/train trundling along at 40-70 mph
@trooperdgb9722Рік тому
Outstanding analogy!
@justforever96Рік тому
Not really a good comparison. Narrow gauge engines are still rare and special, built for their specific little railways. The Panda is cheap, good, ubiquitous transportation for the masses. If it had a real analog it would be a street car or two, but I don't really see any good rail connection. They are just widely different animals. Me broadly you might say the Panda is the 4-4-0 American type if the car world, or the GP40. Or maybe the 0-4-4 Forney if you want to stick with narrow gauge and cheap, utilitarian, small and functional.

I had a Fiat Panda Lounge with the 0.9l two cylinder Twin Air engine for 5 years. Most fun car I ever had. Slow as hell but just so fun. Loved sliding it on roundabouts and tight bends and the engine made it sound like you were doing 200mph in a V8 supercar all the time. Lovely little thing. Now I have an electric Corsa, which actually is proper fast and has amazing grip due to the low center of gravity. It's a car that you can take corners really fast with. Which actually makes me miss my Panda a bit since the Corsa drives safely. I can take corners twice as fast as I could with the Panda and the Corsa will just grip effortlessly. Wheras with the Panda I always had to fight it a bit to keep it from over or understeering. Panda simply is life. It's love..

10:26 my 2007 Panda works also very good, except for one small thing. When I turn on the lights and try to change the direction of the fan air flow from passengers to the window or the other way, half of the middle panel above the gear stick goes dark and after a few minutes, it comes back and works until you switch it off. I could have fixed it, but for me, this is so Italian and not really obstructing the ride at all so I left it like this just to feel right like in a Italian car (though it was made in Poland this 169 generation🙃).
@civiereРік тому
If you don't want your dear panda to burn down i'd check it out if i was u. Its probably a short. Might even be in the plug, airgrate moves cable but it bounces back while moving. Real Italian would be if it just fails completely or falls off. Unexplainable on and off electrics are dangerous!

My mom used to drive a Fiat Uno when I was a teenager, until one time, the exhaust pipe snapped as she was taking me and my friends to hockey practice. The downside was that we were left stranded on the side of the road. The upside was, I got my first car. Never fixed the exhaust either, so it was insanely loud, and we even painted some GT stripes on it to make it look like a racing car. Or that's what we thought anyway. That car taught me and at least three of my friends how to drive, cruising along the country roads. My mom on the other hand "upgraded" to a purple 127 I think it was, because my dad had like three of the damn things laying around. Wasn't a big fan back then, but now, in my mid 30's, I'd absolutely LOVE to have that purple little Fiat for myself, just because of funny it would be to drive around in it. Anyway, I'm usually a big block V8 type of a guy for the most part, but these little cars definitely have their own brand of charm to them.
