So here's what I found interesting. I watched the video, then I listened to it, and Irish sounds almost Norse. I don't mean Scandinavian, but like old Norse. Almost like Icelandic. I found that fascinating.

Anthropologists believe they came from the same roots. If you look at the names of the old celtic gods, and old norse gods, as well as the old German gods, they all have similar names

That's not surprising, since all our cities were founded by the Vikings. The word for "table" is the same in Irish as in Swedish (bord) and our word for "snake" - nathair - is derived from the Norse "nadr". The Vikings intermarried with the Irish and our language absorbed some Viking influences.

Just one thing - "lean", pronounced "lann" actually means "to follow". The Irish word for "sorrow" is "léan" (note the accent - we call it a fada - over the letter "e") which is pronounced like the English word "lane".

That's one of the handy things about learning Irish in school, particularly in primary school where you have a different teacher every year - one year you're told that "beidh" is pronounced "by" and a year later, it's supposed to be pronounced "beg". Most helpful for small kids who have only ever spoken English...

I so wish I could grasp this language. But I am struggling. I have watched several videos but just trying to remember how different and difficult the letter sound in Irish compared to how English makes those same letters sound. But I love to hear people speak it. My company has an Irish challenge up for this month being St. Paddy's day in it and all. We have a sister FW Metals over there. The challenge was sent in by them to say several phrases. At first they didn't seem that hard..... but then they were. Lol Thanks for all your videos. Love them.
