I would prefer that they take their time and get it right. There is no real rush. I want to see a fully successful flight.
@niri2506
@niri2506 2 місяці тому
No real rush? Oh the rush is real. It's just not as immediate as "we know it's only a few days/weeks/months to save our species". So yeah we have some time. But I'd say less than 2 decades. We are about to be the first humans in a long time to witness a magnetic pole reversal on our planet. We currently get lucky like every other week or so. Just a couple of weeks ago there was a really massive CME which luckily happened right on the other side of the sun but hell half a year later we would have been mostly done with. Just in recent days 3 X class flares 2 of which did hit us and caused massive outages. All the aurora borealis we can recently see all the way down to southern Europe are results of an active sun. There's also increasing evidence that there's such a thing as micro novas that stars go through multiple times in their lifetime and that is has happened here in our solar system already at least once. Timing of which might also be something we are about to witness in our lifetime. So I'm not so sure how relaxed we can be about all of this. All the world should put a single minded focus into making sure our species can survive whatever is coming. And having survival shelters on just one planet doesn't seem like a very good preparation for system wide events. So can we please all agree on stopping to fund wars and put all that money into the survival of our species? Please? Even if all this turns out to just be minor issues (though worst case Earth's axis tilting massively will definitely not be minor and might end up making life on the surface as we know itimpossible) shouldn't we be prepared? Let's just assume it will happen in 2035. That's just over a decade away now. Can we get into a rush as if we knew that's how much time we had left?

The FAA will clearly not extend the license to permit the number of launches that SpaceX is clearly capable of in 2024 if tests continue to blow up. SpaceX needs those 9 flights, and will have completed more than 9 stacks in 2024 based upon their current construction rate, never mind the rate they can achieve with two MegaBays and two StarFactories.

And that super strong, heavy stainless steel will crush and cut through everything it hits since it is much tougher than the aluminum most rockets are made of. Those towers should be at least 2 kilometers apart. You want to be at least 10 kilometers away from that vehicles when it is fully fueled. I doubt a combination of cryogenic methane and liquid oxygen coming into direct contact will just burn. It might explode outward along the ground, as well as upward. That much energy released in a couple of seconds could cause a powerful pressure wave which could break glass for 15 kilometers. If I was NASA I would have taken a couple of tanks of LOX and CH4, chained them together and cut them apart with detonation cord to see how it burned, before letting anyone put thousands of tons of the stuff together 10 kilometers from South Padre Island residences. I will be shocked if they can catch those vehicles reliably. That seems like a crazy idea to me, especially when legs would work. So what if you lose some mass to orbit in exchange for near 100% reliability. In orbit refueling will also be tough to do. It will be interesting to watch what the Chinese do with their Moon landings.

I think SpaceX may just concentrate on getting just a second tower up - rather than worrying about building a whole pad to go with it. Why? Think about it, if they want to practice catching boosters, it would make perfect sense to have the minimal amount of hardware in the danger area. Why risk a whole pad when only a tower is needed to catch a booster? Once they have perfected the catching process, then they can go ahead and put the time and money into a second pad. A standalone test tower for catching makes perfect sense to start with.

@robinsonmitchell9995
@robinsonmitchell9995 2 місяці тому
I think the second tower will, for a time at least, be a Catch Tower rather than a Launch Tower. It only makes sense. SpaceX has to learn to catch boosters. They don't want to use their main launch pad. It took a while to get landing F9s down, but now they've done it hundreds of times. It will take a while to perfect the art of catching boosters and Starships with chopsticks, and they're not going to want to do that on their main launch pad.

Since they have to climb up onto the rocket. That's why they have the charges in the backpack so they have both hands available for stability. The last thing you would want to do is trip and fall because your hands were full when you're carrying that stuff!
@Thats_Mr_Random_Person_to_you
@Thats_Mr_Random_Person_to_you 2 місяці тому
@LordTimelord high explosive is actually really hard to make accidentally detonate (like the traditional C4 basically require a pecursor explosion to make it do anything, hitting it it a hammer just does nothing). They require a significant amount of energy to get the to go off.the firing charges however, now they are dangerous. Sure they have much less explosive in them (still enough to seriously maim someone) but they require much, much less energy to go off, thus much more dangerous. The High explosive delivery is pretty 'safe' in terms of delivery. As the install team was carrying both the high explosive, and detonators at the same time (albeit across different people) that's why thre was much more overall caution. Putting it into backpacks just helps maneuverability as you say, but not really for the reason you suggest
