Great video! Well done! I like the way you reserved yourself and were able to not get overly emotional even though it was obviously a difficult experience. Hi Huub, I am quite new to your channel, I have watched a random diversity of your videos, and not always chronologically. I just had to tell you that I really like your take on world sailing so far. Recently I have purchased my first 6.20meter sailboat and I am enjoying learning the ropes on the Dutch internal waters so far. One day I should take a sailboat to sea.. Untill then, I love to learn from your vids, but I especially appreciate that outside of sailing you talk more and more about travel experiences and generally discovering the wide world. My fiance is from Asia and has moved to the Netherlands to live with me a few years back, it has been quite the journey to discover life together. Especially language I feel, can be a barrier, a blessing, and also a personal mixture of words/terms that only the two of you (or the two of us) can follow. I really like that you take this new sailor under your wing, and hope she grows as fond of the lifestyle as you already are! I wish you all the best, and really hope tha me and the misses will someday follow in your tracks! Sail on! Mazzel :)

It is very difficult to jump thru all the political hoops of immigration for people from Columbia & Venezuela to travel abroad especially aboard a foreign flagged sailboat. It helps to know someone who has been thru that process successfully. Hope you have a great visit. 🤗 ⛵

Just for your information: Huub has the Dutch nationality so I believe he also sails under the Dutch flag , and St Martin is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

I wanted to clarify her age to this audience and myself, so I went to our Patreon page and asked Huub her age he responded 24. Daniela will probably age pretty fast if she reads all the comments. I watched the video again and truly enjoyed her seeing another part of the world for the first time.

Yea! Huub has a new sailing partner. I hope that she has good ship maintenance skills because Huubs boat occasionally has problems and 4 hands are better than 2. Did she bring a set of tools with her? I look forward to seeing more of the two of you together. St. Martin looks very inviting and the surrounding water is absolutely beautiful.

Huub, how did you two meet? Great story about dysfunctional bureaucracy! It can happen anywhere! I had problems entering Mexico from the USA 60 years ago! (I was 21 and hitchhiking across the country from Baltimore! I made it to Mexico City and back without issues once I dealt with a hostile border guard by entering at another POE!

Huub, I think it’s great you are having crew come aboard. I don’t get the comments on this video about age. Lots of 24yo look very young. I was that way and I was self conscious about how young I looked. it! When I had kids I got a lot of judge-y looks. Don’t listen to the haters. She seems like a persons who wants to travel and y’all have that in common. I think it’s great after all of your travels that you are now hosting someone else beginning her travels. Also, like Michelle said - glad there’s no yoga in the video. 😂😂😂

Mostly likely this is a charter cruise, with the Colombian parents treating the daughter to a great sailing experience. In Colombia, they give the students, most of December & January off like a total of 6 weeks.

If she was the same age as your daughter, he would be in jail and she back in her home country. Like her, at 24 I could easily pass for a school kid. In fact, when I started driving school bus I jumped off after pulling in to pick up 6th graders. And the teacher asked my trainer when I said I was a driver.

Huub, it's common for immigration offices to deny entry visas to single, pretty, young girls from poorer countries even with letters of invitation. Immigration offices are often graded by how many people receive temporary visas and return to their native country. Pretty, young girls pose too great a risk to get engaged/ married and stay. I know it's crazy, but that's just the way things are in the world today.

The same issue happened to me .... well actualy to my girl ... there's usualy one thing needed to get trough immigration without any trouble ... send her a document like a job agreement .... may s a chef at your boat .... and no problem will happen ....

A similar thing happened to me in Egypt - leaving it! I had a siringhe with Super Glue, with my camera and lenses, but using all languages I know, couldn't explain what is Super Glue ... finally, somehow I got on board the aircraft, throwing it in the trash... Hard times...

Traveling abroad as a latino is pretty difficult. They don't have the same benefits as people from first world countries. My guess is they thought she was suspicious so they just deported her, no questions asked.

Immigration and customs officials are often the most obtuse individuals a yachtsman may interact with, frequently corrupt also. The pre judging of anyone based solely on the passport is an idiocy, particularly given the range of electronic info available on us all. I am a NZ delivery skipper with a Paraguayan wife, I have first hand experience of this nonsense. Fair winds and kind seas to you both, may all be smoother in the future.

I wonder what Lin Pardey would say to that. Or maybe Susan Hiscock, who did 3X circumnavigations on Wanderer, @ ~ 30' LOA? How about Jaja Martin, mother of 3. You might know of her daughter Holly on UKposts, who is doing pretty well herself, AKA "Wind Hippie" on a 28'er. Both part of a family of 5 circumnavigating for ~8 years on a Cal 25' boat. Later they upgraded all the way to 33', so that they could go steel hulled, and into the Arctic waters. All 5 of them. Their boat just a smidge bigger boat than Huub's vessel. There are plenty more women who have and will travel on boats smaller than, as large as, and larger than Huub's. It is the size of your soul, your dreams, and your determination, which matters. _Not_ the size of the boat. *That*, my friend, is the truth. :)

People in positions of power; immigration, police, etc.. are often incompetent and when faced with such situations where they make mistakes they will usually double down on their incompetence rather than admitting they made any error. This is because they are not accountable for the problems they cause people. I hope you made an official complaint regarding this, even though it is doubtful it will have any effect.

Nice girl...educated..one can see by her way of using napkins and stuff... humble .. probably didn't come all alone there, but with some friends that are around, and thats OK... and You are also nice person. (Don't press her to go swimming, seems that You are exateraing by asking her: "Would You like FORST to swim, or eat?" (Doesnt leave her a space to avoid swiming...)... Ask her first, would at all she like to swim? Maybe not... Nice to have her on board, just don't push her too much. Be as gentle as possible (but not too much, leave some misterious part hiden, for her to discover and explore ..if it's not too late). And don't pay much attention to those gelous guys, commenting here - she's real treasure!!! Keep her on board, if You can... Slow, and gentle ..and misterious ... Regards ;)

Why not use a Marina address? Cheaper to check in to a marina and use that address instead of paying for multiple plane tickets. Not judging, but I'm sure there is a lot of sensitivity to Human Trafficking issues about Columbia so that may explain some of the hesitancy at Immigration. Best wishes.

Huub when you enter a new country, Immigration does not have to make sense and they have the right to refuse anyone. To assist an traveller and make paperwork up, is not the best idea and can be dangerous, we are sure you did it with a good heart and only trying to help. But This lady looks awfully young !!! 😂
