When I went to a recent Elex I spoke with the people on the CONNEXBOX stall to talk about how they have innovated on methods for the newer small profile Wago devices to fit within their existing and upcoming WAGOBOX.
In this video I briefly discuss the issue and show what CONNEXBOX have done to assit with this - this video is to raise awareness in case you are not aware of these inserts that CONNEXBOX provide, in which case you may risk non compliance with BS 7671.

Great stuff! They are my go to junction box these days and I must say the maintenance free option gets you out of some scrapes at times, good to have a clear explanation of what exactly we need to do in order for them to be truly maintenance free. Keep up the good work!

"Every day is a school day", I didn't realise till recently that putting cables in Wago connectors in a Wagobox on its own wasn't good enough to be MF but had to also have a cable tie securing it closed to comply with the "Tool required" part of BS 7671 and now I've learnt from your good self that there also needs to be "packing material" to prevent movement of incompatible Wagos so thank you Mr Watts, much appreciated.

Great content, does the box have to be secured to a joust etc, in order to comply with the maintenance free requirement or can it be just placed into a ceiling void or under a floor unsecured and still be classed as maintenance free joint/conection? Regards, Simon.

I first used the lever connectors, then realised that pushwire were smaller and cheaper unless it was for flex or something I knew I'd need to disconnect soon. Now using all the new lever connectors, and the new 3 way pushwire. Just about out of 2 way in the old pushwire, but still have stock of the 4 and 6 way, which is a bit of a pain... Ah well, beats choccy blocks any day. Just waiting for the lever terminals to appear on accessories, imagine how much time we'd save if ceiling roses had them! Future is all lighting connections at the switch but for retrofit etc...

Hi any idea which junction box the 2273-208 wago connector fits in as dose not seem to fit in the 221 box and the older box even with adapter thanks

As i understand they use spring type connectors in rockets because of vibration. Cant for the life of me understand how stopping a floating wago connector of any type will make the blindest bit of difference to the connection. I was also told by a Wago representative that the spring connectors will actually get tighter over time.

Another thought, the wago boxes also require a tyrap to make them MF. If the box is situated in an inaccessible place, how would you know it had a tyrap on it, so what difference would it make? I accept the tyrap when its accessible to prevent access by kids etc

'access by kids' ? Access by anyone without the use of a tool is what the regulations are getting at so even if hidden or accessible, you need a tool to expose the terminals - thats the general idea...

Thanks for this - very interesting. I am struggling with this idea of maintenance-free and vibration. I assume that the intention of these inserts is to minimise vibration of the connections in the Wagos. I wonder if there have been any tests. If the Wago box is vibrating then constraining the connectors in it with inserts could be worse than not constraining them. I would like to see the test results and video from a vibration rig.

I believe that the box would be fixed, and that the vibration would travel down a cable into the enclosure.. I'll get more clarification at Elex this week. 👌

@@markrowland5393 - it 'vibrates' due to the cycles of electricty (Hz) amongst other things. That is why junction boxes and socket outlets with screws need tightening over time and this is evident when testing continuity of conductors.

This is a bit of a concern. Does this mean that Wago does not believe that their connectors will stand up to the vibration test unsupported by the Wago box? I would have assumed that under test conditions, Wago "maintenance free" connectors would remain properly connected to the conductors without any further external support. Does this mean that Wago connectors cannot be classed as maintenance free when not carefully slotted into one of their special boxes?!

Wago connectors are only MF to BS5733 if contained within a wagobox that forms part of the test. Just like how ideal connectors are only MF if contained in their box. It is a common misconception that the connector itself is MF when it actually the assembly as a whole.

If vibrations come down the cable into the enclosure, isn't it better if the terminals float freely so that they vibrate with the cable? It's only by holding the spring terminal to a non-vibrating position that the forces will put a strain on them.

The terminals still have mass - of course there's a strain on them if they're free floating. If you clamp both cable and terminals to the enclosure they can't move (significantly) relative to each other.

Just wrap them in tape and jam them in, no vibration then.

Informative, thanks. I don't get the vibration problem though. If the cables are clipped and the Wago box fixed via it's mounting lug, whats gonna move?.unless the connector is floating in free air in it's compartment, I can't see the problem. or am i missing something?

Your assuming that all enclosures are installed with good workmanship and therefore not subject to vibration.. this isn't always the case. Impact/vibration on conductors if installed poorly could travel into the enclosure.

I dunno 🤷♂️. I know if you mounted one of these on a joist under my floorboards on the landing, or above the door to my 6 year olds bedroom, there would be some level of vibration from the building shaking around with all the stamping and door slamming.

Not for me to say. It would be up to ConnexBox to test that option to the standard test conditions mentioned in the video, if they conclude its acceptable then they would have to provide the instruction for us to comply with BS7671 in this way.

@@SparkyNinja And either way it's not a particularly great option - big tubes of neutral-cure silicone, curing in the nozzle resulting in wastage, cleanup, yet another tool and material to cart about..

Monkeh silicon is part and parcel of an electricians kit is it not so no more to cart about and the amount required to hold a wago in place wouldn’t require any clean up

There are three different types of Wago boxes made by Connexbox. The smallest has no compartments and is for light fittings. The second has two compartments to house 222 connectors rated at 20A, 773-173 connectors rated at 32A, 773 connectors rated at 20A. The third has three compartments to house 221 connectors only rated at 32A. It pays to read the small print on the boxes and accompanying instructions.

Can't help but say the whole vibration thing is totally over the top. When you consider the shocking state of some wiring you see and the other rubbish ways wires are connected or shoved in back boxes it just strikes me as over the top.

Over the top maybe but why are some screws loose in juction boxes and socket terminals? The original installer wouldn't generally leave them 'loose'. Physics ...

I've seen quite a few burned out wago connectors in fault finding. They don't really clamp down very well and I'm not sure I trust them 100%

@@tomorichard think the issue is they are fine the first time they are used. But they get very loose if anyone takes cable out and reinserts. Plenty of burned out loose connections from them. I'd rather stick to junction boxes, far better connection
