The two students that killed their teacher are terrifying. They acted so casual about not only killing their teacher over a bad grade, but also receiving life sentences. When they apologized to the family, they said it in such a robotic way that they weren't even saying it because they were sorry for themselves, they were saying it because they had to. They killed their teacher, didn't care enough to hide the body, and went to court to receive life sentences as if it were a minor inconvenience. Both are complete antisocial psychopaths.

I’m obviously not defending people who kill, but just because something is written down doesn’t necessarily mean it doesn’t come from the heart. Sometimes you have more to say and several things to address, and a single moment isn’t enough to fully work through your mind and externalize all of it at once. Some people communicate their emotions differently. Letters are written because their contents are formed over a long period of dwelling and reflecting.

A part of the Spanish teacher's obituary: After graduating from school, Nohema worked 17 years as a flight attendant for Mexicana de Aviación. She also studied to be a commercial airline pilot and became one of the first women in Mexico trained to fly passenger jets. Nohema never lost her love of travel, a passion she passed on to her children. Paul and Nohema moved to Fairfield in 1992 where they reared their family of three children. She became active in St. Mary Catholic Church and eventually attended Mass daily. Nohema’s faith was always her guiding light, and she became a liaison between the parish and Fairfield’s small, but growing Latino community.

The law often requires it if the killer is a minor or if they cooperated with the investigation. The one getting off easiest is probably Rachel Shoaf, who will likely be paroled in May 2028. Her cohort Shelia Eddy has apparently alarmed the mental health professionals who examined her because her parole date is listed as 01/01/3000. That's right, the year 3000.

Concurrent sentencing is a judicial cheap shot. It reduces multiple felonies to one served all at once. Add to that early release, and it's a get out of jail free card. That first girl who drove into a wall at 100 mph is not going to spend life in prison. She'll be out in less than 20 years, with plenty of life left in her. It's a slap in the face to the two males whom she murdered as well as their families too.

Possibility of parole. In most civilized countries (of which I do not include the US) most murder convicts get 15 to 25 years. Life without parole is withheld for the most egregious of murders and rarely applied. Execution is non-existent in more than 2/3 of countries and not a single advanced democracy (the US not being an advanced democracy.) But, as I said, the sentence allows for the possibility of parole, not parole guaranteed. And to get parole would require multiple circumstances to be in agreement including the victims views. Of course you don't allow for the reality of the sentence because you are creating a strawman in order to whine.

These little morality plays raise some questions that we should all think about. First, consider that the brain's center of ethics and judgment, its arbiter of right and wrong, is in the frontal pole, in the far forward end of the cranial vault. It is the last part of the brain to reach adult maturity, the last to fully myelinate (for the nerve fibers to fully acquire their myelin sheaths, the insulation that allows the axons and dendrites to function at full capacity. This process of final brain maturation is typically reached between the ages of 19-23. Until that time, judgement is often not fully functional, accounting for teen suicide failures recounting afterward that "I thought I'd feel better in the morning if I killed myself today." It's common knowledge that young people very often demonstrate flawed judgment and risk assessment. I once had a 15 year old patient who was a skater, blasted through an intersection on his board at 50 mph. He was genuinely surprised when he hit the side of a car, breaking both femurs, and catapulting 20 yards through the air, sanding down his nose in the one-point facial landing. At the risk of exposing myself as substantially "woke" (GASP!), I want to ask the question "is it right to sentence a 14 year old to life in prison for operating a body with an unfinished brain? I am not suggesting an answer, just indicating my ambivalent discomfort with current practice. Moreover, who is really responsible for generating the idea to commit murder? When I see "You're my Spanish teacher and this is the last thing you see," my first reaction is “This sounds like it was written by a professional script writer, or the designer of a First Person Shooter RPG.“ At the risk of sounding like a Southern Senator blaming video games for psoriasis and teen violence, it does suggest that the idea or its execution were provided by for-profit writers. The past is full of examples of people who committed horrific acts in their youth, but who achieved redemption later, going on to lead meaningful and important lives. Just sayin'. Maybe we need to think more before irreversibly turning these kids over to the retribution industry.
