I hope this is not really connected, or that you put some security in there. As showing the urls will enable people to call your endpoints right? I imagine it could be annoying if that happens. But otherwise nice project.

Do you remember a The Big Bang Theory episode where they routed a data packet around the world just to turn on/off a lightbulb? It was the S1E09 episode “The Cooper-Hofstadter Polarization”. Also here’s another page describing a recreation attempt and detailed explanation of how to do it: atmelcorporation.wordpress.com/2015/03/04/video-turning-on-a-lamp-via-the-internet-the-big-bang-theory-way/ (Retrieved 2021-05-26).

Don't forget that right now your webserver is publicly available from anywhere in the world, meaning you have to secure the api relatively well. Otherwise any random people would be able to go to your server and just mess up your system (turning it on/off, or even DOS-ing it). Also building an android app which shares a key that you'll use to secure your api will be better than just hitting the webserver in the browser to turn it on/off.

Routers use the NAT protocol to have multiple private IP's designated to every computer, phone, etc. Port forwarding is when you call your router public IP (basically xD your internet service IP) and your application runs in certain port, if you are running at localhost it might be 8080, then in your router's admin page you are saying that if any application send a package to your router public IP with the port 8080 then he will send it to the private IP computer that you specified the port-forwarding with the port 8080. Great video, will try something similar but with an old pc !!

That way you're not having to sit there and type out the input every time, you could just enter into an app, or some kind of controller where you could just press a button and the command would be entered for you.

A Raspberry Pi is such a powerful "mini computer" but for this case I would have used an ESP8266 to make the launch easier and faster and it's more dynamic whenever it comes to program it. The advantages of the Raspberry Pi is that you can have your own files on it simulating a webserver but with the ESP8266, if you have a bootstrap for example, you can upload it to your host and make the calls to that server. Anyways, such an entertaining video as always!

Hey Calle, i suggest you look into Containerization, for example Docker. Setup Ngnix Reverse Proxy and point to your router via DDNS. Advantages -> you can run more applications which require specific ports at the same time(for example two websites which use port 80) map them to the pi port 3000, 3001(or whatever you like) and assign a subdomain with the ngnix proxy. You also get better control over your Network, if you PORT forward, your Network is open to the outside (kinda). Nextcloud is an other fun one (Ubuntu on an SSD to run on the PI - maybe even Headless) Oh Networking fun stuff to get into. Greetings by a fellow dev.

Hey Kalle, i am not sure exposing your public IP address is a good idea, having a webserver that can be accessed publicly can be an easy access to your home network, thus every other device in that network (if vulnerable, which we all know every device is if you're motivated enough). What i suggest: - Change the domain that was exposed in this video. - Use some ip filtering tool on the webserver. - Use a vpn bridge, so that you can ensure that only you have access. - Have the interface on a hosting provider and keep only the api on the PI.
