We did the land and sea tour through Holland America that included Denali, Fairbanks and Dawson City in the Yukon. It was fabulous. My recommendation is to do the land portion first so then when you're done with that you can just get on the ship and relax

Antarctica is amazing. Think of it as Alaska X10. We went there this past January on an expedition. Once you're there the weather is in charge of your itinerary. You will sail in the same area as the expedition ships and see many of the same sights. We sailed past the Saphire Princess in the middle of the night. The whales and penguins are everywhere.

I love Alaska, and it was my favorite cruise destination until I went to Antarctica. Oh my, words cannot do it justice; Antarctica is Alaska on steroids! I definitely plan to go again.

I went to Antarctica in January 2024. I got to go to Iceberg A23a. It was amazing. I also especially enjoyed cruising Charlotte Bay and Wilhelmina Bay.

Cruise tours are amazing! We paid a ton to do Galapagos and Machu Pichu and it was worth every penny. Everything is seamless and navigating the sacred Valley in Peru, we could not have done it this well without the package. You have to get a timed entry to Machu Pichu as well and they always pick amazing hotels. You won't ever regret doing a cruise tour.

We also did see the A23a iceberg on the Sapphire Princess Jan.4-20, ‘24 cruise during the 4 days of Antartica cruising. It is an amazing beautiful cruise! Unfortunately I recently read a BBC article (last week) stating the A23a is melting and breaking up a lot at this point, now that it’s getting into warmer waters. I doubt it will still be around for the 2025 cruises and beyond.

I looked at the 28 day Alaska - Arctic Circle Cruise on the HAL Westerdam. It looked great until you realized that you are only going to spend six hours in Dutch Harbor. and nine in Nome. However, what makes it most unappealing is that you have days and days of sailing is some of the roughest waters. Also, who knows if the ship will be able to dock in the various northern ports due to weather?

We have done 2 Princes cruises to Alaska. Both of them were cruise tours and fabulous! ( Do the land portion first and relax on the ship after!)

I use Amex Delta Platinum, it’s been a great card. If I traveled once a quarter then I would consider the reserve but still hesitant due the lack of earning multipliers (2X miles restaurants, grocery, 3X miles hotels offered on platinum ). American is the only airline I have heard of not awarding miles if booking third party. They will have more information released in May with a list of preferred travel agencies that would be eligible for mileage accrual. Must book main cabin or higher to get miles, basic economy will not get miles. It will be interesting to see what other airlines will do in the future.

Could you please talk more about packing for Antarctica. Maybe I can pick up some cold weather clothes now as we’re doing the 22 day S. America/Antarctica cruise in January. It will be a challenge as we will be spending some time in the hotter regions pre cruise. TIA

I did the 16 day cruise in January/February. This is summer, of course, in the southern hemisphere, so had 3 temperature zones -- Santiago, Buenas Aires and Montevideo in the 80's+. Punta Arenas, Ushuaia, and Falklands in the 50's and low 60's and Antarctica in the low 30's. I took 3 capris, 3 lined leggings, 3 long sleeve t-shirts and 5 short sleeve t-shirts, a pair of silk long underwear (top and bottom). I layered and did laundry. (I also had a pair of black pants and blouse for dining). I used packing cubes a and got it all into a carryon and personal item. I hope that helps.

OMG I'm impressed that you were so organized and only used a carryon. That is a very good list and will help me figure this out. Shoes are a challenge too. Also jackets/rain gear, hat,gloves etc are so bulky. Thanks so much for your comments.

Did you mean to say that you are going to Antarctica in January 2025? I am waiting for the Princess 2025/26 itineraries to be released, which I understand will be tomorrow. I just logged onto my account and don't see the new itineraries. Or, are they released early to travel agents?
