For having been pushed up and down the dunes at insane paces, that's one clean looking bike. Damn, there's not a single speck of dust in sight! I can't get mine to look like that even if I spent a whole day going over every cranny, bolt and whatnot 😂

Ik guessing those brake pads are pre bedded otherwise the riders have to bed them in in like a quick stop or even if they have quick stops or stuff like that after their changed

You can’t really pre bed in pads . The bedding in process is just conforming pads to the shape of a worn disc . I would say they just change the discs out at the slightest sign of wear than it’s an non issue .

I think they are only allowed 6 tires for the whole race so they have to get more than one day out of the tire. I did think that it was interesting that they did change the mousse.

If you’re stripping down every day, grease is just messy and I guess collects sand particles. I have a friend who uses silicone spray on his chains and they are always clean (ish) and last just as long, rides in all weathers but sprays after every ride. It is worth consideration.

The Norden is due out this year.......fabulous looking bike, but for adventure travel will it be suitable.....fickle electrical components, valve shims and too frequent services.....I’m in the market for one but will wait for the full specification from Husqvarna to be published.

Yep they can only use 6 rears for the whole rally . Toby is crazy easy on the gear tho . For example his clutch is good for a whole rally other riders need a new one every other day !

they dont check valves in the bivovac. the engine change penalty is only 15-20 mins vs checking valves which require a bucket of shims.

Alinel Woundhorn what ?! KTM engines are good for a whole rally without even a new piston . They would be checking clearances everyday I’m sure . This video skipped alot . Mechanics would be putting some long hours checking and double checking as much as they can .

@Alinel Woundhorn that’s because they didn’t get a penalty for swapping out an engine. They could use one spare back then . They were swapping them out because they could. Now they get a penalty so they run the same engine the whole rally no issues at all. Carbys even in modern rally’s have many benifits no doubts about that. Lyndon wrote an interesting article on just this . He’s done dakar on EFI and a carby bike now .

@@willschofield1210 ever since Dakar ASO restricted cc to 450 engine swap is always 15 mins penalty. Since you are not aware of history, in 2012 in spite of an engine change , the transmission gave up on Marc coma's bike (2nd engine) , btw the idea of a performance-tuned 450 lasting the whole rally at a competitive pace is absurd. Lyndon can write anything he wants, but the bike he rode "rex bike" was an FI bike , FYI.. 2016 was the first year any ktm finished with the same engine.

The tire restrictions are great for privateers who dont have the money to change tires every day. This is an interesting Dakar for sure. Prodrive and X-Raid are limited to 180kph so Toyotas big $€£,000,000 Tier vehicles can keep up.

THis is why Dakar is artificial compared to the ISDT. In that six day event the bike has to be showoon stock and the rider has to do his own maintenence within the timed stages and only chains and brake pad are allowed to be changed. Punctures had to be repaired...no spare tyres. All tools and parts had to be carried on the bike. You have no access to any external assistance or parts, no pit crew...just you. Dakar should adopt these rules and make it a true test of skill and endurance.
