The thing I admire about Daryl Hall is that his hits have withstood the test of time. Songs like "I Can't Go For That" and "Sara Smile" still sound as fresh today as they did from my car radio back in the day. I never would have guessed that as they were straight up pop and most all pop has a very short shelf life.

My band opened 60 shows for Hall & Oates in ‘77 and ‘78. It was during their comparatively commercially lean period of ‘Beauty On A Back Street’ and ‘Along The Red Ledge’ albums. I used to watch them from sidestage, night after night, as Daryl would never sing a song the same way two nights in a row. He is a true soul singer of the highest order, black or white. All Daryl said here was that he and John are now just business partners, in the H&O brand. It’s a touring brand only at this point, and it pays bills for both of them. They’re not creative partners in the songwriting/arranging/recording/producing sense. It wasn’t mean. It was just the facts. Having said that, Daryl is rather aloof and he does have an ego, and there’s nothing wrong in that. I’ve yet to meet many highly successful people who aren’t that way. It’s more than often part of the equation that makes them so great to begin with. I must add that John was a very friendly and accommodating touring partner. Good guy. Daryl is very private.

Very cool! I saw them in the mid 70's just as Sara Smile was breaking. I had been a fan for almost a year at that point. The first H&O album I bought was Abandoned Luncheonette, I immediately went out and bought Whole Oats. They were different and special, I told everyone about them. That mid 70's concert was on Long Island, my GF and future wife wasn't too familiar with H&O and she wasn't feeling too great (her period), anyway, within 20 minutes she forgot about her headache and pain, it was better than any Midol pill, LOL! When Daryl was singing Sara Smile he sat at the edge of the stage and he had that entire audience in the palm of his hand, it was a terrific concert! You were very fortunate to have played on the same billing with them.

I agree he is a wonderful man. As a kid I somehow found myself backstage at a huge show in Ohio because of my fathers association with the promoter. I saw a little argument with him and one of the guys from AWB. I think he was the leader not sure but it began harsh but two level headed men were able to stifle it before it got nasty. Maurice White from EWF and Leroy Sugarfoot Bonner from the Ohio Players. Had nothing to do with anything musical but back in the mid 70s people seemed to be less arrogant and more willing to let things go. They just dont make men like this anymore. Great post, loved reading it.

What is Daryl talking about that he and John don't have a "creative partnership"? Nevermind all the songs that they wrote *together* -- "She's Gone", "Out of Touch", etc. -- it was fairly common knowledge that they would help each other arrange and shape the songs that they wrote separately. And they produced all of their 80s albums together. If that's not a creative partnership, then wtf is?

So as someone who has probably heard 95% or more of Daryl's interviews, I think I can add some perspective to what might appear to be him discrediting John here. First, Maher needed to be more specific when asking about things in terms of time, like Daryl said at the end " Oh you're talking about the OLD days"....What we need to realize is that it has been almost 40 years since Daryl and John actually sat in a room with guitars/piano and wrote a song together. It may not feel that way to us because we still love the music like it was written yesterday, but for Daryl, that was 2 or maybe 3 lifetimes ago. Think of it like a marriage and the songs were the kids ( Daryl has used this analogy before). They got married, had all these kids, grew apart, but still care for each other and have to still remain " together" to help keep the kids safe, taken care of ect.....So there is that part The real issue here, and what I hear in many of Daryl's interviews, is a confusion/anger that he was never taken seriously as a solo artist, and least not in the way he wanted. Just look at what he has witnessed. Michael Jackson, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Sting, George Michael, Jon Bon Jovi, Rob Thomas, and more, all split from their original groups and found, in some cases, more success solo than with the original groups. So from Daryl's POV, he must be like WTF? Why did I get so ignored? To the point that his best album, IMO, Can't Stop Dreaming, was basically ignored until it was re-released AFTER Hall & Oates were back together with Do It For Love. Only THEN was that album even recognized, and it did spur a few AC/Jazz hits...So I 100% forgive his hurt, and he is clearly hurt, that when he tried to go solo he was never really given the time of day or promoted properly, and only after each time he would go running back to John, did he have success. He is human, and that would wear on any of us. Lastly, some of what you see here is memory loss. Daryl has never had a good memory because he is always in the now. I have NEVER , and I have seen at least 30 in person, I have NEVER seen a H&O show where he did not screw up the lyrics at least once, you just come to expect it lol. Also, many times his stories are different or confusing from one interview to the next. I have heard him say that Jon Bon Jovi did an excellent job on So Close, and I have also heard him say he ruined the song. Yes, we all know that he was divorced before his ex wife died, but you can tell by the look in his eyes that he still loved her, and most likely their parting was similar to how he parted with Sarah, who said " I know he still loves me, but he just can't be with me" or something close to that. You can tell by the way he speaks about Tommy, Clive and others that he feels cheated somehow, that he feels he should have been able to have equal success solo as he did with H&O. And really , who can blame him? Just listen to any of Soul Alone or Can't Stop Dreaming and you wonder how in the HELL did these albums flop and not produce hits? It seems it was all political and business related, and not really related to the music. Labels wanted so badly to protect the H&O brand that they ignored Daryl. He even said once "we work together because the world forces us to". If you watch enough of his interviews you realize he has some deep wounds, and a love/hate relationship with almost every MALE he interacts with ( a few exceptions) and speaks very fondly and lovingly about all of the women in his life. I think John knows him, and will just take this interview as Daryl being Daryl. Anyway, just my two cents.

@Flying Fluffy Hockey Being a huge fan of Hall & Oates, I totally agree with everything you said. "Can't Stop Dreaming," IMO, was his best solo album, which he recorded in Japan. It wasn't released in the US until later, so my husband had to order it from Japan. Watched them so many times, even in smaller venues around Southern California. The last count was 25 times. I will never tire of watching them live, even with the same setlist. 🧡🙂

I don’t know how I’ve just found these but, Bill, I’ve been an admirer for years man. And lemme tell ya, it wasn’t easy. Living in the northwest corner of southeast Oklahoma… Being raised between Baptist and Pentecostal backgrounds. I’ll say again, I had a hard time trying to sneak around and watch your shows. But I did. And I had an awakening at around 14-15 y/o. I’m a non believer, or an atheist or agnostic at very least. Anyways. You’re the future of late night stuff that we can all enjoy anytime. It sounded like a real sore spot for Daryl but Bill didn't press him on it. I wish he would have asked him more as bout what he meant.
