There’s a common misconception that if you like to meticulously organize your things, keep your hands clean, or plan out your weekend to the last detail, you might be OCD. In fact, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) is a serious psychiatric condition that is frequently misunderstood by society and mental health professionals alike. Natascha M. Santos debunks the myths surrounding OCD.

I'm not sure if I had\have OCD Because when I was younger I have many leaves on a curtain and I slept next to it and I counting them and touching them but I had to tou chat the same thing 2 times with one hand and the other with 2. But if I touched with the same hand one time more I had to do it one more with the other hand. It was kind of the feeling that something was getting left out . Also when I went to another room or something it would just like feel it was waiting to be touched . And also it was the same for touching anything else. I had started this probably when I was around 5 or 6 . Another thing is ( i don't know what this is ) but still to this day I have a thing where when I hold something like a rubix cube I have an urge to like touch the cube in the exact middle . It feels like an itch that I need to touch if that makes sense. And it happens for everything like for a tablet so for the thing to put your ear phone things in right now I want to poke my hand in it all the way the the right spot. A way that kind of (not fully ) helps me it the put my neck back and move it to the side . I don't know if I have OCD or not and I don't know what that weird thing I NEED to do (the rubix cube or anything else problem) is but if anyone knows what it is please can you help me . Because if it is like a illness or something (I don't know ) I can treat that because I hate it and it will interfere with my future. So please can you help me . thank you and if you know what it is I will really appreciate it .

@@karthigesusasikumar7431 It could mean that you have intrusive thoughts or something, the only solid way to know is from therapists, etc. But if you want some quick tips, try not to not think of the compulsions. Let it be free in your head while nit doing it. Its like holding a door that will always open. Its useless to keep holding it so, its really hard to not act on the compulsions while it wanders in your head, but it helps. If you need more details, i reccomend katie d'aths videos on youtube :)

A doctor once told me “OCD patients are the most ‘sane’ of all mental illnesses, because we KNOW what we’re doing feels crazy.” We’re aware just how nuts it is what our brains are telling us to do. That’s half the shame. People that just use “oh I’m so OCD” as a catch phrase because they like to keep things tidy is infuriating and completely opposite to how someone with OCD acts. People with OCD often feel extreme shame and will hide it at any cost.

If you have OCD (compulsions and/or intrusive thoughts) do these two things consequently and your compulsions and intrusive thoughts WILL 100% get better or maybe even completely vanish if you do it long enough: Meditate daily (ideally 30-60+ minutes, I recommend Vipassana, which is simply putting your Awareness on your breath) and constantly practice Awareness throughout the entire day. Practicing Awareness means simply observing your thoughts and compulsions in a distanced and detached way. You have to realize that you ARE the observer/the Awareness and not the observed thoughts and compulsions. Do not identify with your thoughts and compulsions and simply observe them from a distance. Intrusive thoughts and compulsions are randomly generated and you have absolutely 0 control over them, but you have the power of being able to ignore them and not worry about them. Fully accept and welcome all thoughts and compulsions, no matter how strange or disturbing they may be. Never feel ashamed, disgusted or shocked, this fuels intrusive thoughts and compulsions immensely. Compulsions and intrusive thoughts thrive on the attention and meaning you give to them. Meditating is gonna be extremely hard at first, but don't be discouraged, it will become easier and easier the more you meditate and practice Awareness. The goal would be to remain in Awareness 24/7, which would make you completely invulnerable to all compulsions and intrusive thoughts. Wishing you all the best 😊🙏❤

It manifests differently for different people. I am in control of mine to the extent I want to be. My germ phobia is good - again to the point I want it to be. I used to force myself to eat at Waffle House (the filthiest place I could think of) every so often to get control of that. I still hold my breath as I pass people that just coughed though, and I don't enjoy leaving the house, although I certainly can and do. Redundant checking - probably the worst for me, but I've grown to thank God for it! I've gotten to live a life with minimal anxiety because I don't have to worry about whether I left the stove on, the place where I work at unlocked or anything like that. No house fires, no trips to the ER with my kids. No weeping videos of me on TV going "I just turned my back for a minute! (with relation to something horrible happening to my kid.) I'm an excellent worker because I check and check again and again! So, I'm sick of everyone dissing on OCD. Just like when people would accuse me of being overprotective with my children, I would tell them they're being underprotective and feeling guilty. I learned that, properly controlled, it is a blessing - non OCD people work overtime trying to tell you that you are crazy, that there's something wrong with you. You can control it - yes you can - use it to make your life better. In my opinion, people that aren't blessed with OCD are, many times, just lazy. Too lazy to get up and make sure the water is off, that the candle was indeed blown out, that the children are in a safe place, etc. Sorry Mr. Psychologist - go mess with someone else's mind - no money from me!

I was diagnosed with OCD in my early twenties when a specific obsessive thought became constant. (I struggled with this for a while although my thoughts, constant, usually would cycle every week so it was bearable) It now was to the point of the thought entering my dreams, being there while I had conversations with others, sitting in the back of my mind while I thought about other thoughts just to remind me it won’t leave me alone. I stopped leaving my house because the thought would get worse. I had panic attacks in bed without telling anyone because I felt crazy. I was a recluse for a while trying to understand myself. 5 months in I told myself I would go see a therapist if it didn’t stop at 6 months. 7 months hit and I caved. Took my therapist 5 minutes to diagnose me. I felt so relieved. Took me about 11 months and some meds to finally understand what was happening. I feel so free. I don’t wish this upon anyone.

To anybody who is going through this, I've been through it but I also came out successfully. There is hope and remember difficult issues don't really need to have hard solutions. Sometimes it's the easiest thing one can do: 1) Instead of trying to prevent these emotions/thoughts from coming, just love the one who's always in doubt and fear (you). Most likely OCD has stemmed from deep wounds to your inner child that you have unconsciously suppressed. Once you realise this, it ceases to be disorder. Rather, it's a way of your subconscious mind to direct your attention to your core wounds which are presenting themselves as mental health issues but in reality are not. 2) Connect with your inner child (Read Jung's guide to inner child work) and embrace and accept your dark and positive sides completely. Let go of focusing on the dichotomies of good/bad. I tortured myself over for having certain thoughts against people I hold dear(family, god, children) but now I've realized I might not really be as "good" as a person my ego wanted me to be and I am OKAY with that. And that's liberating. Even the most kindhearted and pure people in the world also have dark sides to their personality which they hide (called the shadow self) Radically accept that there cannot be light without darkness. And our shadow side only becomes self sabotaging as long as we reject it. The moment we accept it, it becomes empowering and we become complete as a person and it no longer presents itself as anxiety, shame, etc. Remember you don't have to do everything alone, if you can, please seek THERAPY and work with professionals who will help you through the inner child and shadow work(Read up on Carl Jung) 3) Practice disconnecting with your thoughts whenever you find yourself falling into the cycle. Realise that it is not YOU but your EGO which is separate from you. And remember your ego is the worst enemy. 4) The most importang thing is to LOVE yourself every moment in time. Give yourself a hug, say "I'm here for you and it's going to be okay" and if it's hard, visualize embracing your childhood self within you who has gone through so much and acknowledge them. This is an opportunity to heal and you'll come out better than before. Life will become so easier

My OCD has taken over my entire life. It's gotten to the point of where I can't sleep at night, I never feel hungry anymore, I got terrible pain around my heart and lung area. All of this is because of the constant anxiety, I avoid eating because I think about things too much and when I eat I feel like I'm going to throw up, I don't sleep out of the fear I'm not going to wake up because of what happened in my chest. I'm constantly in my bed, monitoring my breathing, checking my pulse, making sure I "feel" hungry or tired. Trying not to think of things that make me upset so I can be happier in my life and relationship. It's fucking terrible. So the next time I hear someone say "I'm so OCD" because they like clean shit, I'm slapping the everliving fuck out of them.

Sorry, if I'm obsessively compulsive about something, then I'll say I am obsessively compulsive thanks. what next, calling people who are on the far left of the autism scale not autistic? In fact after watching this video, as it seems their obsessive compulsiveness seems to be automatic and out of control, I'd say they are not obsessive and compulsive at all, and if there was a miracle cure to turn it off, we have no idea if they would be meticulous or particular about anything. dear all . Permission to complain and ask for help :) I'm a girl and I'm still 16 years old I dropped out of school when I was in elementary school because of violence by my teacher. The incident was in 2018. I was really traumatized and depressed since the incident that happened to me when I was in elementary school, I didn't leave the house for almost 2 years, I really didn't leave the house at all even on Eid al-Fitr I just locked myself in my room, I'm just crying and contemplating even the effects until now. because since the incident at that time I was often ridiculed and bullied by my neighbors. god, I don't want me to die in vain, what about my family? Yes, those who should have supported me and defended me at that time hurt my heart and mentality even more because I was required to school with a mental state that is completely destroyed, no one understands me at all, even the teachers who hurt me don't think they have done anything wrong to me. Many people came, the teacher told me to go to school and continue elementary school at that time. Even though I said I didn't want the impression they were pushing me, in the end I left, only to take the class 6 exam because at that time I already had an exam. I went to the exam and was accompanied by my first older brother who worked at the jkt, my sister was willing to take leave to return to Java so that I could take the exam so I could pass. After completing the exams and getting my diploma I decided not to continue school because of my mentality, I was really in a state of being very afraid of people, even the effects of being afraid are up to now, Even though my relatives and relatives insisted I used to be cheerful now I'm not! After I shut myself up for 2 years I was forced by my first kin to go to JKT to learn about work At that time I decided to participate even though I was very scared Finally I worked at the age of 14 and that was also under the supervision of my brother I was born in a family that doesn't have all the shortcomings. Even in Jakarta, I was also beaten mentally by the boss, my brother, I'm often told that if you can't do it, it's better if you don't have to work like that But I managed to survive for 1stngh 1yr Because it was also forced by my brother, Now I'm at home for almost 1 year unemployed I don't know what to do, I don't even know what to do because I don't have a diploma. Many people advise me to go after packages b and c But that also costs money. I sometimes wonder where the money comes from The effect that I get is that I often have trouble sleeping, even until 5 in the morning. Sometimes I just daydream thinking about what I will do in the future, I'm confused, I'm very depressed I have told my life story to several groups, but people commented suggesting that I go to a psychologist I'm confused, I just don't have money to eat, it's hard, who do you want to complain to? Friends don't even have one at all Sometimes they even complain about fathers and mothers, they don't know how to help because of limited funds. Is there a locker like that, is it okay to help or is there another solution I really need help 🙏😭 I want to work without using a diploma because in the city there must also be a certificate for sure, If I work, I want the money to go after the package and help my parents :(( Please info and solutions :)))))))) Indonesia area. An important part of OCD that makes it different from "normal" repetitive or compulsive thoughts/behaviors is the fear behind NOT completing the compulsions. It could be fear that if you don't check, count, wash, etc something bad will happen to you, your family, a natural disaster etc.

Yep, a lot of internet self diagnosers seem to think that if something out of place simply causes them to just want it to be in place means they have OCD. Like the people that get annoyed at a pattern not being consistent or slightly out of place. Yes and no, it's common and certainly not talked about as much as it should, but many people don't experience any fear of repercussions from their ticks/compulsions. I do have some, but my primary OCD compulsions are to repeat actions. I don't do it out of fear, I do it till it feels "right" and not doing so is physically uncomfortable to me and very distressing. Even typing this I have to touch keys multiple times, backspace and retype things, click multiple times on the screen whenever I do something till it feels "right" but I'm not fearful of anything bad happening if I don't. OCD is a spectrum, there are thousands of ways someone's OCD can present.

@@GiraffeFlavoredCondoms I agree with this one. I feel like my own condition gets undermined or not taken seriously when extreme cases are brought up like the fear of dying stuff. What you described is more accurate for me at least; extreme physical discomfort and mental distress. Hi. I am an 18 year old boy, and i have had OCD for almost 8 years. I have almost control over my OCD, and I hope that sometime in the future, it won’t bother me, and I won’t have it anymore. If there are sitting anyone out there with OCD, or are beginning to get some weird new thoughts, I have 3 good advice. The first is to trie as much as you can to not listen to your thought. I know it is so hard, but it is the only way. Try to ignore them and think of something else. The second is to talk out loud about it. Tell about your thoughts to your mom, dad and siblings and your friends if you want to. It is important so you don’t have all your thoughts for yourself. The third is to try and stop it as soon as possible, don’t think that you will get to it, you have to stop it right away, so it doesn’t get to be a big problem. Remember also that you can get help but in the end the only person that can get rid of it, is you. Good luck stay strong😄😄

Having suffered with OCD and an eating disorder called ARFID I can definitely relate. I used to get bad thoughts about things such as crashing my car or a family member would die etc. if things weren’t correct and I was often late to various activities. I would highly recommend speaking to a therapist. I initially done this for my eating problem and the OCD has been virtually subdued as a result. It feels great to break the tendencies and know that I’ve got a little one up on OCD.

Aditya Khanna Agreed. It's a big pet peeve of mine when people diagnose themselves with depression or anxiety or ADD or Asperger's. For one thing, it draws attention away from people who really do have disorders and need help. For another, you can talk yourself into exhibiting symptoms of disorders in order to unconsciously justify your past behaviors.

I never really thought I had OCD when I was younger, cause I didn’t know much about it. But a couple years ago I realized I had it, and a couple people actually called me out on it too. I’m not the type of OCD where I have to wash my hands all the time, or be neat. But I repeat stuff A LOT and it switched every once in a while. For example at one time I would have to use my right hand/foot for everything, to grab things, step over things and much more. Another thing is that my brain tells me to do something, or else something bad will happen to me, and the bad thing is usually pretty specific. Currently I’m having this thing where I would have to repay everything three times. I don’t why but I can’t stop myself. It really takes over my life and gives me a lot of stress and problems. So I hate when people say they have OCD when they really don’t. If you read all of this then thanks :)

People who have this feel really tired and exhausted. Sometimes it even ruins relathionship with family. It is really serious and it takes too much time to “check things” and some other stuffs or “something bad will happen” . @feelsokayman3959
@feelsokayman3959 3 роки тому
Wishing you all the best

I think what most people don't fully understand is that the difference between actually having OCD and just being very meticulous or super organized is the THOUGHT or motivation in their head that's making them be that way. If you're super clean and organized because you want to have your shit together, then that's very healthy and normal. The reason people with OCD do things, is to keep the the constant, intrusive, horrible thoughts entering their head from coming true, like " if I let any of my belongings touch the floor, then my dad will be killed in a car crash tomorrow." So people mistakenly see this person as a neat freak, when in reality, they're trying really hard to just keep the these constant, irrational fears that invade their thoughts from "coming true". It's not about being clean for clean's sake. Or if don't do tap on the wall 16, 32, or 64 times, then a the fear I just experienced of a loved one dying will come true. Trust me, you don't want to have OCD...

constantine5 exactly how I feel when it happens. It's like wanting to control things you can not control, a part of you is persuaded that if you don't do it something horrible will happen, not in link with it but just by a kind of magical relation. For example if I don't close my bag a multiple of 4 times then the plane I'm going to take will crash. I do know it's an irrational assumption but I feel like it inside of me.

i don’t know if i have it or not but that is exactly how i feel.. Like if i don’t skip over every line on the floor or something, something bad will happen to my mom. I try and tell myself to stop it but i just can’t. Also it may be something really hard to do or something like when i play hockey, if i don’t cross the blue line before a lyric in a song that’s playing in my head is over, than i am the worst player on the ice or something i have horrible anxiety about will happen. I don’t know what to do and it just won’t stop...

My son 12yrs old was diagnosed with severe OCD today!! He Will be treated with medications and therapy! Unfortunately there’s a long waiting list for therapy but his medication will start asap!! So not a lot of support out there and of course the need is greater than the available doctors unless your able to pay for private psychiatric therapy at $200/per hour? So as a parent you have to educate yourself on this disorder and the coping skills that are needed to live everyday helping your child survive and have some peace and Oder in your family life !! Wow !!! I’m drained daily from the outbursts the unreasonable behaviour the screaming the crying the unbearable routines he puts himself through !! I understand and try to help him cope with everything and then he wants hours of no interaction and no social life !! I’m already homeschooling and keeping our home as peaceful as a can….. even bought him a little kitten to bring some Joy !! So life is difficult but our faith keeps us sane doing the best we can do !! 😇

I thought about killing myself so many times because of OCD. I’d randomly touch strangers hair and put myself in awkward situations because of OCD. In exams my OCD made me delete all my correct answers and end up handing an empty paper, EMPTY!! Even though I knew the answer. I had OCD when I was like 5-6. Its literally mental Hell. You know what you're doing is ridiculous but you can't help it and that kind of internal conflict will literally make you crazy. I was also a hoarder because of the OCD. I cured myself not with medications or therapy but I just worked up the courage to take all my hoarded shit and throw it in the dumpster and just fighting my instincts. I cried for a week but it was worth it. I was free. If you don't have OCD, don't say you do because it's literally the worst thing that could happen to a human in my opinion.

I’m 13 and i have severe OCD. I found out that some of the things I did were unusual, because I was having panic attacks, so I went to the psychiatrist and she asked me to tell her my whole routine with detail. And, for example, at the end i said that before i fall asleep I have to swing back and forth 352 times, or else I won’t wake up the next day. And it never sounded weird until I said it out loud. Then I got diagnosed with panic disorder and OCD, and now my life is a mess!

OCD isn’t just having predetermined routines or compulsions, like having to shut the door exactly 3 times etc. It can also take form as in what I call “until it feels right/okay”. This causes compulsions that aren’t predetermined and have to be acted on, until you feel like you did the action just right. This can be even more dreading because you never know how it turns out. One time you might shut the door without a second thought, but the next time you shut the same door, it can happen that it doesn’t feel right (because of how you touched the handle for example). Then you will have to repeat the compulsions for an X amount of times (could be 2x, but could also be 27x). As someone with OCD myself I find these types of compulsions to be the worst, because you don’t know what you’re in for, as opposed to the routine/predetermined ones. As to the serotonin aspect, that’s something that actually has a big influence on how bad it can get. At times when I’m more stressed or less happy, compulsions get worse. When I am in a happy place and just living my life, it is likely to be less severe. It’s always interesting to me that this disorder can express itself in many different ways, depending on the individual. This sadly enough also makes it kinda stigmatised and often misunderstood.

@@bic00 I got diagnosed with OCD when I had to see a psychiatrist, and afterwards got into creative therapy for other related struggles (such as adhd, etc). During that time I also went on a journey of trying different medications, that the psychiatrist prescribed for both my OCD and ADHD. So finding the right meds and the right dosage, was quite a challenge. I tried some different ones over a span of 2-3 years, and eventually found a combination that had the least side effects, and helped a bit. For my OCD I got some type of antidepressant, on the highest prescribed dosage, to stimulate my mood. This would in turn help my OCD, because of the extra serotonin in the medication. It does help quite a bit sometimes, but when I feel more down or when I’m stressed, my compulsions do get worse and more frequent. But talking about it in therapy at the time and taking medication, is as far as I’ve gone with ‘treatment’ so far. What about you?

I've been struggling with OCD since I was seven years old, I remember when there was a family party at my place and I didn't want to step on the lines of the floor, I HAD to skip them, otherwise my brain told me my grandma would have died, I specifically remember her saying: "sweety, what are you doing?" and I started screaming:"I don't know I can't help myself!" and I started crying, ever since then I've been struggling with it, I'm 17 now and I struggle with it every day, no one notices it instead of my parents because I've told them, it's way less heavy for me now, but it's something I will always live with...

Wishing you all the best
