Derrick Bell (1930 -2011) was a legal scholar and a civil rights leader. He is considered by many to be the founder of critical race theory. The article "Racial Realism" is the text of a speech Bell gave at The University of Connecticut School of Law in 1991.
Bell begins by describing the legal realism movement of the early twentieth century in the US, which argued that precedence, property rights and objectivity were principles that serve a covert purpose. He goes on to discuss the episodic nature of black progress and then argues for the abandonment of racial equality as a goal and its replacement with racial realism.
