The PCB is probably soldered with high temperature no lead solder. Just adding some regular 60-40 will help a lot. Your wick looks like it has no flux in it. I once bought this type by mistake. Just put some flux on it. Chip Quik is pretty good though.

Why not just use a heat gun?

If the area you're desoldering is sensitive to heat, consider combining this with a hot air rework station. Instead of a 300 degree iron tip that can thermally shock components or lift pads due to overheating, you're slowly heating up the board with a stream of hot air. Also this stuff can really change the metallurgy of the solder you use on the pads, so a "dilution" pass with some good solder followed by wick is a good idea to really make sure there's none of it left on the pads.

Or preheat the board. Just make sure whenever you use chipquik, get it all off before resoldering. Or the new contaminated mix might melt under normal device running temps.

When I've been in that situation, I've never yanked the whole assembly out: Instead, I've applied gentle traction between the component and the board, using the blade of a small flathead screwdriver, and worked back and forth, loosening a bit at a time, and being careful not to let too much heat build up at once.

I bought a hot air gun (not for de-soldering, but general stuff), it has 3 ranges of temp, 60, 350, 550. For leaded and lead free mid range works awesome with the narrow nozzle. Didn’t know this low melting temp wire solder existed.

I have a Metcal desoldering station but I prefer desoldering braid. The trick is to use paste flux on the braid and the largest tip that I have. Wet the tip with solder to increase the contact area to transfer more heat. Once the solder starts to melt pull the braid along until the solder is removed. It helps to fix the board with some weight or in a vice.

With some practice, I figured out I could use gravity to help pull the solder out of the solder holes in a pcb. Mainly doing power jack replacements. Melt the solder in one or two holes then tap the board on the workbench. The solder falls right out and sometimes releases the part. Plus it gets rid of the old solder at the same time.

Oh my god, ordering immediately. Desoldering has been a nightmare lately. I’ve got a few cheap pumps that are just useless. I even cut some silicone tubing for the tip to create a seal and it somehow still sucks, or doesn’t suck, whatever. Anyone able to tell me if a semi nice desoldering gun is worth the $? Anyone have one that they highly recommend? Thanks
@SianaGearz

I plan on purchasing ZD211 when I get around to, it's only around 10€ from all the usual reputable suppliers. It is manual but integrated desoldering iron. It's said to not be very durable or long lasting though, but for occasional use it's probably ok, just don't be inclined to clean the reservoir too often and disassemble extra carefully. I imagine there are better products out there, but they're not even close to affordable to me. I have modified the desoldering pumps I already had by combining parts of several into one and choosing a weaker slower spring and lubricating the o-ring. This way the rush of air doesn't insta cool the joint, so this works better, and the recoil isn't so hard either. I haven't had a need to modify it with a silicone tip, I can desolder anything nicely like that. I despise plastic ones, way too much moving mass for some reason, I use the smaller alu body type. I have also cut off the sheath around the plunger at the top, and replaced the weird slanted plunger top button with a 3D printed flat and rounded one. My hands are tiny and I can't really reach the button comfortably to reset the pump, but modified like this, I can reset it by whacking it on my hip.

This tends to be trouble when a component has soldered anchor pieces which need a lot of heat or has a lot of pins, you can't keep all of them heated well at the same time. Or how many arms do you have to wield 3 or 4 soldering irons? For a 2-legged component, wiggle or push is too easy to bother with any more specialised tools or techniques.
@petrickoliveira1351
@petrickoliveira1351 2 роки тому
@@SianaGearz well, usually I just raise the soldering station's temperature, add more normal Tin for higher contact area, heat one of the pin rows while slightly tilting the componente to the side, repeating on the other row as it already raised enough on one side. I would only use the desoldering alloy for more heat sensible components, like microcontrollers
