Give-Away Info... As you see, I did wind up getting a smaller backup battery with USB-C. I'm going to give away some of my previous backup battery packs. I'll mention that in an upcoming shorter video, BTW. 👍😁👍
This is about the contents of my travel bag... not a story of my backpack failing on me, by the way, hah. I don't mention it in the video, because the product may no longer be available, but this is the backpack I have used for over a decade now...

For deodorant, just take an empty lip balm stick and a deostick (antiperspirant to be preferred) and try to work as much of the deostick into the lip balm stick as you can fit. Yeah, it's a bit messy and I bet not all deosticks like to be handled.

A few things: 1. We were surprised at how much happier people were to serve us in Italy once they found out we were Australian. 2. If you can get a hold of it, No Pong All Natural Anti Odorant is pretty good. Comes in a neat little tin that I carry with me in my bag. 3. Like you said: thermal underwear is a must have. I was on an overnight hike near Sydney with my scout group and the leader had us unpack all our gear and explain why we brought it. I'd packed thermals even though it was late spring or early summer, so I said that I probably wouldn't bring the thermals next time. The leader instantly shot that down, and explained that if we got caught out in bad weather, they could save my bacon. I've luckily never had to experience that, but they've turned a cold night into a comfortable one on several occasions. Thanks for sharing Dev, I always feel like I come away from your videos with something I can improve.

It really is amazing what needing to actually work in harsh conditions does for a product development cycle. I absolutely love pelican cases, and I'm currently debating using their air cases for luggage, as my current stuff is aging. I travel with like $10k in tech just in my carry on, and I've been regularly nervous about when they say they'll check some carry ons, because holy fuck do I not need them breaking several laptops in one fucked up toss. Pelican would calm my feelings on the matter a lot. That said, boarding with the disability group tends to short circuit that problem, but then ... not everyone can use that strategy [and please people, don't fake it for that].

Even if you don't travel having a 'go bag' like this is a great idea for those unplanned trips to the ER. (Like they're ever planned!) @participationtrophyhusband3049

I travel internationally a few times every year and my bag looks much the same. Some recommendations I have to make your life smoother when travelling internationally, avoid military looking clothing and bags/gear. There are several countries that ban civilians from wearing camo. It ends up encompassing most military clothing and gear. Depending on the mood of the customs agent or the police officer that you encounter, a coyote brown molle bag might be considered camo military gear. Nothing like having to leave your backpack behind and getting a large plastic bag to carry everything. Since i don't want to change bags depending on my destination I keep a very nondescript bag for all of my travels. I also avoid military/firearm looking moral patches when traveling international, why encourage a conversation with the customs/authorities. When you're out and about, military and firearm related patches are just another way to say "I'm an American" without saying "I'm an American". Also a lot of countries require that you have any medications in their original packaging and some ban medications that are OTC here in the US. They aren't necessarily going to take your word for what's in that little baggy and again, why encourage an unnecessary conversation and a potentially long delay with a customs agent. Buy individual travel size medications. The packaging is small. Pro Tip: It's on you to know the laws of the country that you're entering and sometimes custom agents aren't very forgiving if you're ignorant of their laws.

DHS has a fairly low bar for hiring requirements to be a screening officer and even then if you know what you're doing it's just a a stepping stone job transfer to a better department. Something I mention every time bringing meds is mentioned: Look into the local laws of where you're going! Some countries require you to bring meds in their original packaging and can become quite upset with you for not doing so. You're not likely to get into trouble but it can easily be a pain in your butt for some time. Basics like wet wipes, zip lock bags, some bandaids, a pen, lighter, toothpicks, basic meds etc etc whatever suits your needs. Just having that with you at all times will make your life so much better whenever you need it or some one else around you needs it.

On the IFAK - it's definitely more useful than you'd think. One time I was driving along on a roadtrip, just me and my dog. Stopped to let the dog go to the bathroom, and the dingus got some of those spiky seed burrs stuck all over him. Tried to help him get rid of them and the little jerk bit me on the hand. Got me real good. Blood, swelling, deep punctures. Good stuff. Problem is, we were in like the middle of nowhere in Wyoming, I didn't have my IFAK and this car was so new I hadn't put a big first aid kit in it yet. I ended up stopping 3 places and driving about a hundred miles before I could get some hydrogen peroxide and a couple bandaids - at an actual pharmacy, because gas stations out there apparently don't sell anything more medical than tylenol and condoms.

Not all places but most places you can find hot water and I can quickly warm myself up or divert from "repetitive bar syndrome" [Clif, Kind, etc]. Once I while flying in First I got dealt with the "we only have X breakfast meal option left" and I cannot eat that without hours of hurt. So I asked for everything else on the tray, hot water and extra coffee cup. Oatmeal was the new meal offering.

Another pro tip: keep an elastic drawstring raincover for your pack in your go-bag, not just for rain but to protect your bag if you're ever forced to check it at the gate. I had a really nice pack similar to Dev's destroyed when the buckle to one of the shoulder straps got caught on the baggage cart belt as the plane was being loaded - got to watch from my seat as the shoulder strap was ripped off my pack and a seam tore open, dumping my belongings all over the baggage cart and the ground. Being British, I have no need for air con at home and have never used it, and was similarly disappointed last week on holiday in southern Europe to find that the hotel air con also couldn’t match the outside temperature. Cold air came out, a bit, but it stayed a bit warm, and it would have been awful in the summer at 40C. And on the subject of being British…our plugs are the best! But I cannot deny being jealous of how compact US ones are. I’m also always jealous of the pouches you have, so many of them, all perfect for the job. Also lots of these little things are liquid or creams and so on. European airport security is going to make you take every one of them out from the multiply nested pouches and put them in a clear plastic bag when you get checked. The lighter (UK at least) is permitted, but only "on your person", not in the bag or checked luggage.

Here somethings to consider as replacements and add-on for your kit: 1. Lencent 20W Universal Travel adaptor, small and versatile PD charger, works in any country and has USB-A and USB-C connector, 2. Lencent Universal 65W travel adaptor (there is also a 100W version), several variation with a combination of USB-C and USB-A socket along with a universal regular AC socket. Those two could replace any power charger/ connector you have and wont be US connector only. 3. I always have a tine clothe line in my bag, I found it silly at first but I used it so many times during my travels, I would recommend the Sea to Summit clothe line, its a tiny package and its light.

Would love to have a PDF download of all of that documentation you have for the TSA! Those prepaid envelopes are a good idea too. I've been very lucky not to have lost expensive knives and multitools but came very close a couple of times. I'll be doing that! I, too, rock a "tactical" bag for the same reasons. I don't care what other people think. They are everywhere now anyway so it's not like it used to be. MOLLE bags are almost gray man (way overrated concept anyway) themselves now. There are so many MOLLE bags out there that if someone went whacking everyone with a MOLLE bag it would be a while before they got to me.

Hey Deviant, you might like the the Gerber multi plier 600 bladeless. It has a removable grit blade that TSA is OK with as it would be hard to cut skin, but cuts most other things!

If I ever see you IRL (most likely at LGC), I will pull you aside and make you look at my cool EDC loadout. Also, you are the first person I've ever seen with the "Sniper at Work" patch. 19:10 you can even do that with seat belts. it's not recommended, but a TÜV inspector once did that on my frayed seat belt, and told me that while I'd have to replace that at some point, melting the frayed bits together is apparently safer than leaving them open.

A while ago I was able to expropriate a few single use wipe packs of bug repellant, and sunscreen pack. Those live in my kit and have come in hand exactly once, but were super handy. It also looks like there are deoderant wipes, ao i might grab them. I've also got a similar pack of items for my pocket as I sit down on planes, as i always hate to have my bag under my seat or get up a bunch. To make tha pack smaller, ive got a bracelet thats a usb cable, and another thats a set of headphones....but its big enough i can wear it like a necklace. Its kinda a bro look, but it hides under shirts.

My battery bank is the Milwaukee M12 battery adapter. Need to see if they have a Usb-C one available for a reasonable price (HA!), it charges off micro (booo) & the outlet is USB-A. I have so many M12 batteries, it makes sense to keep it despite the bulk (also, my battery-operated warming sweatshirt works off the same, i can charge & be warm at the same time)

7:17 Just a little note I feel I have to add anytime someone mentions noise-cancelling in this context; ANC is NOT hearing protection! ANC counters noise with other noise, but that does not mean full removing the energy that can damage your ears, it just mushes the sound until your brain no longer processes it as such. It's like putting two 200 watt fans against each other; if aligned perfectly you won't feel the air on the other side, but the 400 watts of power still goes somewhere, and if that has nowhere to go (like when it happens inside your ear) it's not going to just disappear. There's no scientific evidence supporting that ANC does anything for protecting your ears, which I think is a very important thing that lots of people don't know about. You're better off picking up a pair of ISOTunes if that's what you're after.
@fightme5543
@fightme5543 7 місяців тому
This isn't exactly true. The ANC in most devices attempts to counteract the frequencies outside the headset by playing the inverse frequency inside the headset. This means that it works similarly to suspension for the air and actually reduces the decibel rating of most loud noises down to a safe threshold! You should look into how they use ANC in major industrial plants to create sound-safe rooms!
@daylen577
@daylen577 7 місяців тому
@@fightme5543 There's very little and mostly circumstantial evidence supporting the idea that ANC would be able to reduce hearing damage. You can scramble sound waves, but you can't simply make their energy disappear. Decibel ratings aren't the only thing that matters when you're talking about damaging your ears.
@FireStormOOO_
@FireStormOOO_ 7 місяців тому
@@daylen577 In principle you absolutely can cancel waves by transmitting the same signal 180 degrees out of phase, and that is a real reduction in the amplitude of those waves and the energy they can transmit in the region the waves are out of phase. You are of course correct about the energy has to go somewhere, but the important thing for hearing protection would be the energy going somewhere that's not your ears. The better question is do those ANC earbuds approximate that ideal enough to provide any protection?

I don't know about the ones he shows but the ones I get (eargasm) aren't ANC, there's no active component. They use filters and are meant for things like concerts but wouldn't work at all for things like shooting.
@JakubNarebski

ANC counters sound with another sound as perfectly as possible out of phase, so that they cancel out thanks to destructive interference, as far as I understand it.

You haven't mentioned them yet, but those two small carabiners look like the cheap aluminum variety, and they are so weak. I've used one to hold down a toolbox in the back of my car, and it spread open just by the weight of the box and inertia of the vehicle. If I was using them ion your context, I'd have the stainless steel versions. OK they are $10 each and shiny so likely to be stollen, but they aren't going to let you down. Have you ever taken that bag into New Zealand? We have crazy strict MAF (Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries) laws here. If you get of the plane and forget about an orange in your bag, that might cost you NZ$400! Chocolate bars are probably OK, but those tiny condiments might not be because they are not commercially vacuum packed and sealed. Just tell them what you have, and they'll say OK or throw it away. We bought tea bags home with us last trip, and they were OK with them.

a pocket organizer with a spare flashlight, a little pen light, spare batteries, a small pocket knife, pocket screw drivers, and broken key extractors, have saved my tail many times at work, i might have to add a small power bank to my organiser as well as a just in case, since we had a power failure a week or so ago that lasted several hours, a usb powered LED "reading light" would also be good for a small area light (kind of like a lantern), good ideas and now you've got me thinking of things i can add and remove from my EDC to make it more usable so i'm not having to dig through other items to find what i need
