This is a video reviewing the features of my custom digital dashboard with Magic Mirror software installed, and showing you how to install a setup of your own just like this one. This device is an entire dashboard with many features, but you can start by installing it as a DIY digital calendar or wall display!

My digital dashboard sits in the area just next to my kitchen, which makes it a perfect kitchen dashboard as well. The large and vertically-mounted 43" Vizio display shows so much information at a glance; the date/time, my Google Calendar events, current weather & forecast, a grocery list powered by Bring, a stock table, a QR code for my wifi and news headlines. All sitting atop some gorgeous wallpapers from /r/cityporn!
I am even able pull it out, thanks to the swivel mount; and use Chromecast - or Google Cast, as they call it now - through a module called MMM-Screencast, to follow along to video tutorials!

I know this is an old vid but want to give props for a great build and awesome tutorial. One take away, NEVER USE A DRILL/DRIVER TO INSTALL MOUNTS TO A TV/MONITOR. You should always hand screw them as the drivers have too much uncontrollable torque and you'll end up cracking the case, screen, or even the control board of your display.
@CKTDanny
@CKTDanny 2 роки тому
Thanks for the comment! 😁 It's true; drills/drivers can be deceiving in how much torque they are actually applying. I'll be more mindful about this and how I present it in the future! :)

Fantastic video, just what I have been looking to do. One question: to save power on leaving the screen on all day long, any suggestions for a pir controller to turn the screen on when it detects motion (and off after a period of time)? I would leave the Raspberry Pi on all the time, so the pir can run off that and doesnt need to be an extra piece of hardware (unless you think that is easier for someone with only "advanced beginner" raspberry pi experience). thanks, just subscribed.
@CKTDanny
@CKTDanny 3 роки тому
Hey, thanks! You can actually use a module that executes this function for you. There seem to be a few options so you can pick one depending on your need but the simplest ones seem to cut the output signal which puts your tv/monitor to sleep. Or CEC control over HDMI seems pretty elegant too :)
@blumsafe230
@blumsafe230 3 роки тому
@@CKTDanny one last question maybe you have an answer- cutting off the hdmi signal with the PIR seems like the best solution, but when a tv has its hdmi signal cut off it usually pops up a message that says something like “no signal”. I would prefer the screen to go black. Any ideas on how to defeat this? Thanks again - your post gave me an idea for a new product for my website www.blumsafe.com - a monitor like this to camouflage one of my safes!

How were you able to put different symbols for different events ? @SDG Danny
@CKTDanny
@CKTDanny 3 роки тому
Hey! Check out the documentation for how to configure the Calendar module: docs.magicmirror.builders/modules/calendar.html#configuration-options The setting you'll want to use is called "defaultSymbol" - it relies on resources from Font Awesome.
@eniahmetaj
@eniahmetaj 3 роки тому
@@CKTDanny I have been working on that but no matter how i change it every event on the calendar have the same symbol. My goal is to have different symbols for different types of events(Ex. gym time-dumbbell, birthdays-cake) Do you have one calendar for everytype of events?
@CKTDanny
@CKTDanny 3 роки тому
@@eniahmetaj That's exactly it. You can only have one symbol per calendar, since you cannot specify symbols for individual events. On my current setup, I just have a personal calendar (gym, hangouts, etc.) and an education calendar (college stuff.) If I wanted a dumbbell for my gym events, I'd just create a separate cal for fitness. Sorry there isn't a more convenient way!

Hey, sorry to hear that! Did you install the MMM-WifiPassword module too? This doesn't come with the default MM installation because it's a third-party module. There's a section in the docs for 3rd party modules

Hey! The config files for this video is on my Github, link in description. It might be a little outdated, I recall there were a few modules that have been replaced by MMM since. I've also stopped using some of the modules since then, such as the stock tracker (it always lagged a day behind) so I don't really have a version of the entire installation to share with you unfortunately. Is there something specific you're looking for? I can do my best to answer any questions relating to what I did in the vid!

I really appreciate for your help. What I need are - picture wallpaper - google assistant - youtube mirroring - QR code wifi info And how did you changed module’s fixed coordination? I can't find out how to edit the position of them. They are all fixed in (kind of "bottom_bar")😂
@CKTDanny
@CKTDanny Рік тому
@@jeesookim2561 I actually didn't do much in modifying the positions of the existing modules! The new modules are sort of just placed in the recommended positions, you can see everything here: github.com/41Danny1/KitchenDashConfig/blob/main/config.js For the modules that I custom installed, you can just Google them (e.g. MMM-Wallpaper) and find their repositories that way; they all have simple instructions on how to install them, as well as their recommended configurations. The weather modules I have in that config file are no longer in service, I believe - so pay no attention to those. And the ones I stopped using are MMM-AVStock, MMM-Bring, and MMM-Screencast. Screencast is the one responsible for YT mirroring but I didn't have great performance on my Pi (maybe it's gotten better since?) MMM-Wallpaper is for the wallpapers and MMM-WiFi is for the QR. Finally; though I haven't used it myself, I believe MMM-GoogleAssistant should get you the Google Assistant on the mirror. Sorry it's a lot to read...I hope it helps! 😄
