I’m 52 years old, and I couldn’t disagree more. We have a lot of great music, of course, but we also had a lot of real crap that no one remembers or talks about. And that’s true of every era. The 60s have the Beatles and The Who, but they also had the Doodletown Pipers. The 70s had the Eagles and Led Zeppelin, but they also gave us the Osmonds. In the 80s we had Van Halen and Dire Straits, but we also had vanilla ice. Today there are some truly amazing bands like Tame Impala and Warpaint. The reality is that every decade produces a small amount of great music and a ton of crap that is quickly disposed of. But everyone believes that the music they were listening to between the ages of 15 and 24 is the best music of all time because it’s the soundtrack of their lives. It doesn’t matter if you were 15, 50, or 80: the music of your late teens will always be at the top of your playlist.

Sorry to hear of his passing. When our band used to play at Kenny's Castaways in the East Village, NYC in the late 70's/early 80's, he was so damn good, and played in many of the bands who gigged there. Glad to see he got much much bigger gigs and was recognized for his great talents.

I thought U2, Dire Straits and Queen were the standouts at Wembley. U2 changed the tone of the day when they came on and played "Sunday Bloody Sunday", they were the first act that day to have real weight and presence on stage. Dire Straits had the best musicianship, and gave the tightest performance of the day. Queen, well they had Freddie, even though he wasn't at his best vocally, and the band played good, but nothing out of this world...it was all about his showmanship, and onstage charisma to involve the crowd. Ultravox, Sade and Nik Kershaw played very good sets also.

Dire Straits have been acknowledged as one of the most intelligent and original bands of their era. As the creation of Mark Knopfler, they successfully blended blues-based influences along with country and rock into an instantly timeless mix of atmospheric album tracks, combined with populist, catchy and massive-selling singles. Although they will rightly always be remembered for their sixth studio album, Brothers In Arms, there is so much more to discover in their discrete, influential catalogue.

This song is timeless! The guitar riff, drum solo, vocals, everything about this song is FUCKING legendary and Sting on backup…. Like holy shit 🤯

Sting had a fine head of red hair back then, neither of us do now. Never get tried of this song. Thanks so much.

Two things: drum solo at the top, Sting as second banana. Both classy, contained, tight.

Live Aid was probably the best concert ever. The Who, Queen, Dire Straits, Tears For Fears, Bowie, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Sting, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Judas Priest, Hall and Oates, just some of the acts. I'd be keeping my ticket stub from that concert anyway.

What a time to be a teenager. Watched this live on tv at 16yrs old in NZ and loved every minute. These guys, U2 and Queen were the acts I was waiting for. This was a time when it was still far more about real talent and the performance, rather than being about image and autotune of today...better days...
